What Is The Fat Burning Furnace Program
Question
Does anyone have any references for actual numbers for this argument,
i.e. how many calories expended at different ‘Zones’..rough estimates
would be fine? My intuition would tell me that if an active athlete
was
interested in losing weight, then they are going to have low glycogen
stores. Therefore if they want to lose weight and they exercise at a
higher level, then they are going to need supplemental carbs. However,
if they exercise in the ‘FAt Burning Zone’ then they don’t need
carbohydrate during exercise, and yes, while they will burn fewer
calories during their bout of exercise…then they are more likely to
lose weight.
Answers
W/o going into a lot of detail, let me just say that the author of the
article you quote has it exactly right: total energy expenditure
increases linearly with increasing exercise intensity (power output),
whereas the percentage of energy from fat tends to fall slightly at
first and then more precipitously at higher levels
(approaching/exceeding ‘threshold’). The *absolute* rate of fat
oxidation is the product of these two, and thus is generally maximal at
a higher exercise intensity than what most people consider “the fat
burning zone”. So, the first mistake that is commonly made is limiting
the exercise intensity to maximize the *percentage* of calories
coming from fat, when in fact that absolute rate of fat oxidation is
greater at a higher intensity. Of course, what really matters is not the
rate of fat oxidation, but the overall rate of energy expenditure: as
you would expect from simple energy balance considerations/the laws of
thermodynamics, and as borne out by research, changes in body
composition with exercise training are related to the total energy
expenditure, not the relative or absolute rates of fat oxidation.
There are, of course, other considerations when it comes to exercise
prescription, esp. for a competitive endurance athlete vs someone who is
simply trying to maintain a healthy body weight. But the idea that there
is some magic ‘fat burning zone’ that is ideal even for achieving the
latter goal is a complete and utter myth.

Associated What Is The Fat Burning Furnace Program Question:What’s up with the Fat Burning Furnace?
I’m not old enough to go out and by all these books and whatever, nor will my mother let me. What exercises are used in the program? What about the diet part? I’m WAY too overweight (honestly, about sixty pounds) and I’m hoping this plan really is different. What do they do in it?
- Answer:The core idea behind Fat Burning Furnace is doing High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). This isn’t a new idea, but FBF takes it to a whole new level and helps get you the most results for the minimum amount of time. The basic idea behind HIIT is to push your body to it’s limit with just a few intense reps. This breaks down your muscles, and as they rebuild themselves, they burn away a lot of calories and eat up all your fat deposits. It’s really quite effective. FBF gives you few different HIIT workouts that you can use based on your fitness level and whether or not you have access to a gym, so it’s not a one-size-fits-all workout program. There’s also some information on diet, which is pretty useful, but isn’t quite as spot-on as the HIIT exercises.
Associated What Is The Fat Burning Furnace Program Question:What are exercises that boost your metabolism?
I’m 16 years old, and looking to lose some weight. I’ve read about the exercise/diet plan for Fat Burning Furnace, but my parents won’t buy me the product/book and I don’t have a credit card to buy it myself. I’m wondering if anyone that’s using the program could forward me some of the exercise routines Rob Polous includes in the book? Thanks!
- Answer:I can’t forward you the book, but I’ll tell you that the exercises are what they call “High Intensity Interval Training” (HIIT) exercises. These aren’t a new idea or anything, so you can look up a few HIIT workouts if you can’t afford the book. The book streamlines the whole process and makes it so that you can minimize your time in the gym or working out. But you can just as easily make your own workouts on your own.. These exercises will basically break down your muscles and as they rebuild themselves, they will consume calories and tap into your fat reserves (causing you to lose weight). Don’t worry about becoming some kind of freakish body builder with huge muscles though; you really can’t do that to yourself unless you really try to. I think the diet portion of the Fat Burning Furnace book is good, but it’s not really my thing. It can basically be described as “eating healthy” and portion control. I’m sure it would work, but I’ve never really liked watching what I eat that much. LOL! Hope this helps.
