Wood Doctor Outdoor Wood Furnace Michigan

Question
You probably don’t even need Spyware or AdAware in your house.
He doesn’t even need underwear in his house.

Ewww,? I hope the raccoons aren’t? looking.

That’s probably why they die and end up in his firebox.

Answers
“Die.”  Yeh, that’s the ticket.  They “died”.  Yeh, that’ll work.

Preparation for the annual zeitgeist reunion, this year at Tim’s place,
stumbled apace.  Expecting vast use of hot water for collective showers
with the five Landry Sisters and those guys from Chippendale’s, Tim knew
he had to crank up the Hardy.  That thing puts out unlimited hot water.
It was time for the Fall Raccoon Harvest.  Traditionally here in
Michigan dogs are used, but the only one Tim had was Lily, the Springer
Spaniel, and she’s a birddog so highly strung and specialized, if it
doesn’t have feathers, it can’t be bothered with.  Lily was wound up so
tight on an early morning walk she lunged for a Robin that happened to
land in the yard 50 feet away.  Love them little birdies, eat they
little feets, eat they little beaks.  So, Lily being worthless except
for a fast drag and a laugh, Tim had to use his eyes.

It was a very good year for Raccoons on Popp Road, and in the woods,
too.  Using his little Sears Tractor and trailer, Tim got three full
loads of Raccoons to the Hardy, and stacked ready for the festival.
About one every  400 sq. ft, Tim figured, this year.  Very good Raccoon
Harvest.  Life is good.

Tim knew God loved him, because He caused a steady rain of Raccoons down
upon him, and suffered him to have a Hardy Outdoor Wood Furnace, and you
can burn Raccoons in a Hardy Outdoor Wood Furnace.  You can burn
anything in a Hardy Outdoor Wood Furnace.  :-)

Wiring Diagram Furnace

Question
Please don’t laugh.  I am a “newbie” to pop-up camping, having bought an old
Apache. I have survived quite a few problems, and am now ready to figure out
how the propane furnace works.  I have no manual and no experience with this
type of thing.  I notice there is a blower with 12v marked on it, two yellow
wires seeming to lead away from it, and many wires to nowhere in my storage
box(including the yellow wires.  (I have identified the wires that lead to the
tail lights and marker lights.  I am assuming I have to hook the wires up to a
battery of some sort to get the blower to work.  What kind of battery?  I
assume I will need a charger too.  We have used a ceramic heater and it works
well, but I would like to get the furnace going in case we can’t get a campsite
with hookups.  Is there anyway to use the regular electric hookup?  I looked in
the Stone’s Campworld catalog, and found it little help.

Answers
I have a 1974 apache Roamer. The furnace gets powered from either a battery
(mine is missing also) or a power converter (120Vac to 12Vdc). If you have the
Apache power converter, I can send you a copy of the wiring manual. The manual
does not indicate yellow wires. I imagine the converters were all similar for
all Apaches. I was lucky I found the wiring diagram under one of the benches.
E-mail me back if you are interested. I can send you a scanned copy.

If your funace is a Hydro Flame furnace I can also send you a copy of the
maintenance and service manual. It is just a few page brochure but it may
help.

Associated Wiring Diagram Furnace Question: Where can I find a wiring diagram and fault code list for my Nordyne furnace?
Model # G3RC060C-12 Serial # G3R9309-00958 Nothing on panel covers. If I knew what fault 4 was that would help

  • Answer:That number is for a 3 phase unit. Four flashes means ignition failure on Nordyne. Replace ignitor or check ground/flame sensor Does the flame light and go out in 5 seconds, or does the ignitor never glow?.

Associated Wiring Diagram Furnace Question: need a wiring diagram to connect my furnace to the thermostat and its own wiring?
My “lease to own” tenant took out the furnace and then left so I want to put it back in but the wiring block has one of it’s wires off and I don’t know which terminal it goes on – I also don’t know which terminals the (two wire) thermostat goes on. The furnace has a “Johnson” label on the outsied but the inside says that it’s a Magic Chef model G75 105D-13 Thanks Thats good information, but there is another wire on the furnace that is disconnected. First let me say that this is a downflow furnace. There is a double wire that starts on top of the gas control and one lead connects directly to the wire block and the other goes up and into an upper chamber. There is a wire right next to that one that looks the same and it goes back down to the wire block but it’s disconnected and I don’t know wich screw post it should connect to (Y, R, W, O, or G) Just another fact that may help – the white cardboard with the stamped letters also says “Trans Sec” on it. btw – the first lead that goes from the gas control to the wire block that I mentioned is connected at the W terminal.

Williamson Oil Furnace

Question
Which furnace is a better brand?  What problems if any would I expect from
either furnace.

I live in West Virginia so I will probably be using it 7 or 8 months out of

Purchase what is prevalent in your area.. You know!!
One that has instant service …parts on hand…24 hour
everyday emergency service… Will do an A-1 installation.
Will be in business tommorrow and next year and the year

Associated Williamson Oil Furnace Question: bought an williamson oil furnace,m#wlbo-10ar.need to find the wire diagram to put the power to the unit.?

  • Answer:http://en.allexperts.com/q/Heating-Air-Conditioning-696/Williamson-Oil-Saver-Furnace.htm

Associated Williamson Oil Furnace Question: my williamson oil furnace is only blowing out cool air whats my problem?

  • Answer:The burner is probably locked out for some reason. Should be a reset button on the burner. If it runs after resetting but locks out again there is some problem, do not keep resetting because fuel may accumulate in the chamber if there is an ignition problem. Call a tech for service. Its blowing cold air because your blower is probably operated by a timed control that starts when the heating cycle is suppose to start.

Associated Williamson Oil Furnace Question: Looking for the filter on a Williamson Therm flow oil furnace?

Associated Williamson Oil Furnace Question: fan keeps blowing on house furnace?
have a williamson temp-o-matic oil burning furnace. recently ran it out of fuel oil and had to bleed the line, got the furnace going but now the fan runs constantly and shortly after the heating cycle stops it blows cold air into the house since it is in the basement. shut the power off to furnace in hopes of it resetting itself, didnt work my other option is to shut fan off completely.

  • Answer:It sounds like the thermostat fan switch is set to ON instead of AUTO. If not then hopefully you have a wiring diagram and can trace the point that is supposed to be open to kill the fan and then can determine the failure.

Associated Williamson Oil Furnace Question: Loss of hot water! Please help!!?
I have a williamson fuel oil furnace that also heats my hot water. A couple of weeks ago it quit. I had a tech come out and look at it. The nozzle was plugged and the electrodes were a little wore. He replaced the nozzle and re-gapped the electrodes. He also replaced the in line fuel oil filter. He made some adjustments to get me from 66% efficiency to 82%. The aqua stat was set at 180 lo & 180 hi with a diff. of 10. He changed it to 170 lo & 190 hi keeping the diff. at 10. The furnace heats the house good but doesn’t heat the hot water good anymore. You only have about 3 mins. of hot water for the shower and then it gets luke warm for about 2 mins and then gets cold and doesn’t ever get any warmer than luke warm again (no other appliances were running). When the shower was cold I ran hot water at the kitchen sink for a few minutes and it was also cold. It doesn’t matter what temp you set the aqua stat to the same thing happens every time. The furnace will kick on at 160 and kick off at 165 when it’s heating the water (current settings 170 lo 190 hi diff. 10). Is there a problem with the aqua stat? Or is it something else? I had a problem with low water pressure a couple of years ago. We had a tech come out and do an acid flush for our system. It worked very well. He said that we had a high concentration of calcium in our water and we should have our system flushed every couple of years. The water pressure is ok now. Is it possible the heating performance of the coils in the furnace is somehow hindered by the calcium in the water? Can anyone help me?

  • Answer:Get the hot water coil flushed again. If you have hard water or allot of mineral in the water, this will attach itself to the inside of the hot water coil, insulating it for heat transfer. normal settings for a hot water furnace are 160 low, 180 high and the diff set at 10.

Wholesale Furnace Prices

Question
Do any readers of this group know of websites that give prices of
the various models of a maker, say Carrier?
The conventional wisdom — which I am happy to accept — is that the
choice of contractor is the top priority.  Still, in evaluating a bid or
estimate, one might want to know how much the actual parts cost, or the
difference in cost between an 80 and a 90% efficient unit.
My initial impression is that the actual wholesale cost of the parts
( I assume that nobody in his right mind would want to do the
installation — which needs a license anyway — therefore retail price
would have no meaning) is treated as top secret stuff, sort of like the
way it used to be with car prices.

Associated Wholesale Furnace Prices Question: Buying our first house, need advice…?
My wife and I are looking at a foreclosure that has a pool, fenced backyard, 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 2 car garage, storage shed, and a fireplace. The house only has county taxes and the bank is asking $88,000. We had a house inspection and found some problems. We will need: a new furnace, AC, garbage disposal, refrigerator, front and back door, carpet, tile in the bathroom, 2 ceiling fans, interior paint job, washer, and a dryer. We know a lot of work is needed, but the house is in a great neighborhood next to a great school and is the perfect size for a starter house. We live in an apartment that has had shootings and fights, so we want to leave. A new house starts at $105,000 and have city and county taxes which are about $175 a month. County taxes are only about $50 a month We can get the fridge, washer, and doors at wholesale prices through a friend, and know someone who will give us a discount on carpet. After all of these factors, should we get this house Right now the house appraises for $115,000

  • Answer:No. A foreclosure should be deeply discounted to make it worth it. 17k would not cut it for me.

Associated Wholesale Furnace Prices Question: YORK 13 SEER 2.5 TON MC^2 Condeser actual Value???
Hi, Iam in NJ. I had my condenser change once, and they guy took max time 30 minutes to install it. I plan changing my furnace, evaporator coil due to its age. I was wondering if anyone out there knows what is the wholesale price for a 13 SEER YORK mc^2 condenser really costs, and how much more money it should cost the guy to install it (wiring it, welding it, freon)…..He already would have to charge it with freon anyway since Iam having my evaporator coil changed..

  • Answer:ADVICE: GET 4 BIDS ON INSTALLING: 1. NEW SYSTEM COMPLETE 2. NEW EVAP AND COND UNIT. 3. NEW EVAPORATOR. PRICE OUT ANY ALTERNATE BRAND OR MODELS THEY MAY SUPPLY ON THE ABOVE. MANY COMPANIES CARRY 2 OR MORE BRANDS. (WOULDN’T IT BE NICE TO HAVE A COUPLE OF BIDS ON THE SAME EQUIPMENT?) I WILL RECOMMEND GOING WITH THE MOST EFFICIENT SYSTEM YOU CAN JUSTIFY SINCE ENERGY COSTS ARE VERY LIKELY TO INCREASE. IT IS NICE TO HAVE A BRAND THAT DOES NOT LOCK YOU TO JUST ONE SERVICE COMPANY. IF YOU ARE DISSATISFIED WITH THE INSTALLING COMPANY, YOU WANT TO BE ABLE TO GET ANOTHER EASILY. SMALLER TOWNS CAN OFFER FEW CHOICES. TRY NOT TO GET A COMPANY THAT IS TOO FAR AWAY SINCE YOU MAY NEED FAST SERVICE AND YOU DON’T WANT TO HAVE TO PAY MILEAGE OR WAIT A DAY OR TWO. YOU CAN CHECK THE LIBRARY FOR INFORMATION IN CONSUMERS REPORT. SOME LIBRARIES WILL RESEARCH AND SEE IF THEY HAVE THAT INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE. WHEN YOU HAVE MADE A COMPANY CHOICE ASK FOR TWO OR THREE “RECENT” CUSTOMER INSTALLATIONS IN YOUR AREA SO YOU CAN SEE IF THERE ARE ANY.

Associated Wholesale Furnace Prices Question: How much will it cost us to replace HVAC system?
My fiance and I are currently in the process of bidding on our first house. It is a HUD property in amazingly good condition, except for the fact that the furnace and A/C unit are missing. The duct work and wiring are all there, but the units themselves will have to be replaced. There is a built-in $2200 escrow allotment for the replacement of the HVAC, but I need to know how much more, if any, we’ll need to pay out-of-pocket. Can anybody out there give me a standard ball-park estimate of the price of each unit? It can be wholesale, as we have a contractor friend who will do the installation for us if we provide the units. Some background info on the house specs: 1900 sq. feet, no basement, 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, about 10-12 windows, north-facing. How big/ what kind of a furnace and A/C unit will we need to adequately heat and cool this house? Sorry for the lengthy question, but this is the first house we’ve ever bought and we don’t even know where to begin with the HVAC thing.

  • Answer:4-5 ton 13 sear rating for 2000 sq ft. You are looking at 3000.00 – 4000.00 installed. Get estimates. The labor is the killer, so make sure your estimates cover all labor cost before the work begins.

Wholesale Furnace And Geothermal

Question
Just remember that every BTU converted into electricity cannot be used to
heat your home. Selling it to the utility may initially appear to be of
financial benefit to the furnace owner but will probably cost more to
generate (and derive less revenue from the utility) than the equivalent
amount from the utility.
These things are in the same category as perpetual motion,

Answers
If you generate electricity by such means, there are indeed regulations
that require the utility to buy it back from you. However, they do NOT
have to pay you retail price for electricity — so it’s not the same
thing as running your electric meter backwards. What the utility co.
is obligated to pay is the ‘wholesale’ power cost — either what it
costs them to generate, if they own the plant, or what they pay their
supplier if they are a distribution-only company, like most rural
electric cooperatives.

You end up with two electric meters; they read the kWh purchased
by you (at retail) and the kWh sold by you (at wholesale) and bill
for the net difference. Given that the wholesale price is going to
be somewhere around half or less the retail price, you have to generate
a lot of juice to come out with a net credit. It’s probably going to
work out, if that’s the case, that you only use commercial power for
peak loads, in which case the minimum bill from the electric co.
distorts the economics in their favor anyway.

I’m not sure if the regs require that power companies buy back if you’re
generating, directly or indirectly, from fossil fuel — if your source is
solar, wind, or geothermal the wholesale buyback rule applies. I’m also
not certain if this is a federal reg or just one that’s common to a
number of states.

What Is The Fat Burning Furnace Program

Question
Does anyone have any references for actual numbers for this argument,
i.e. how many calories expended at different ‘Zones’..rough estimates
would be fine? My intuition would tell me that if an active athlete
was
interested in losing weight, then they are going to have low glycogen
stores. Therefore if they want to lose weight and they exercise at a
higher level, then they are going to need supplemental carbs. However,
if they exercise in the ‘FAt Burning Zone’ then they don’t need
carbohydrate during exercise, and yes, while they will burn fewer
calories during their bout of exercise…then they are more likely to
lose weight.

Answers
W/o going into a lot of detail, let me just say that the author of the
article you quote has it exactly right: total energy expenditure
increases linearly with increasing exercise intensity (power output),
whereas the percentage of energy from fat tends to fall slightly at
first and then more precipitously at higher levels
(approaching/exceeding ‘threshold’). The *absolute* rate of fat
oxidation is the product of these two, and thus is generally maximal at
a higher exercise intensity than what most people consider “the fat
burning zone”. So, the first mistake that is commonly made is limiting
the exercise intensity to maximize the *percentage* of calories
coming from fat, when in fact that absolute rate of fat oxidation is
greater at a higher intensity. Of course, what really matters is not the
rate of fat oxidation, but the overall rate of energy expenditure: as
you would expect from simple energy balance considerations/the laws of
thermodynamics, and as borne out by research, changes in body
composition with exercise training are related to the total energy
expenditure, not the relative or absolute rates of fat oxidation.

There are, of course, other considerations when it comes to exercise
prescription, esp. for a competitive endurance athlete vs someone who is
simply trying to maintain a healthy body weight. But the idea that there
is some magic ‘fat burning zone’ that is ideal even for achieving the
latter goal is a complete and utter myth.

Associated What Is The Fat Burning Furnace Program Question:How does the Fat Burning Furnace program work?
I have been battling obesity for 10 years now. I do not eat much at all. And I am now beginning to have health issues arise. I have 2 beautiful children that I need to be able to play with. I have tried everything and none of it really works. I seriously NEED to lose 98 pounds. I have been seeing a doctor for 6 months about this issue. When I started, I was 113 pounds overweight. I have lost only 15 pounds in 6 months. Now they are talking about surgical procedures. I do not want to do this if I don’t have to. When I found the Fat Burning Furnace page online, I wanted to check it out. Can anyone help me? Does it work? What do you do? PLEASE HELP!!!!

Associated What Is The Fat Burning Furnace Program Question: Has anyone heard of the Fat Burning Furnace weight loss program?Does it really work? Is it worth the $40.00 and or what is the so called “trick”. Thanks

  • Answer:You can find some answers in a web search for “fat burning furnace diet reviews”.

Associated What Is The Fat Burning Furnace Program Question:What’s up with the Fat Burning Furnace?
I’m not old enough to go out and by all these books and whatever, nor will my mother let me. What exercises are used in the program? What about the diet part? I’m WAY too overweight (honestly, about sixty pounds) and I’m hoping this plan really is different. What do they do in it?

  • Answer:The core idea behind Fat Burning Furnace is doing High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). This isn’t a new idea, but FBF takes it to a whole new level and helps get you the most results for the minimum amount of time. The basic idea behind HIIT is to push your body to it’s limit with just a few intense reps. This breaks down your muscles, and as they rebuild themselves, they burn away a lot of calories and eat up all your fat deposits. It’s really quite effective. FBF gives you few different HIIT workouts that you can use based on your fitness level and whether or not you have access to a gym, so it’s not a one-size-fits-all workout program. There’s also some information on diet, which is pretty useful, but isn’t quite as spot-on as the HIIT exercises.

Associated What Is The Fat Burning Furnace Program Question:What are exercises that boost your metabolism?
I’m 16 years old, and looking to lose some weight. I’ve read about the exercise/diet plan for Fat Burning Furnace, but my parents won’t buy me the product/book and I don’t have a credit card to buy it myself. I’m wondering if anyone that’s using the program could forward me some of the exercise routines Rob Polous includes in the book? Thanks!

  • Answer:I can’t forward you the book, but I’ll tell you that the exercises are what they call “High Intensity Interval Training” (HIIT) exercises. These aren’t a new idea or anything, so you can look up a few HIIT workouts if you can’t afford the book. The book streamlines the whole process and makes it so that you can minimize your time in the gym or working out. But you can just as easily make your own workouts on your own.. These exercises will basically break down your muscles and as they rebuild themselves, they will consume calories and tap into your fat reserves (causing you to lose weight). Don’t worry about becoming some kind of freakish body builder with huge muscles though; you really can’t do that to yourself unless you really try to. I think the diet portion of the Fat Burning Furnace book is good, but it’s not really my thing. It can basically be described as “eating healthy” and portion control. I’m sure it would work, but I’ve never really liked watching what I eat that much. LOL! Hope this helps.

Water Furnace Exhaust

Question
First of all excuse me if I don’t use the correct terminology. I’ve noticed a
problem with my gas hot water furnace. There is an automatic damper (?) that
sits between the furnace exhaust and the chimney. When the furnace fires up the
damper opens. When it shuts down it closes. Lately I’ve noticed the damper in
the open position even when the furnace is off. If I give it a little nudge it
will close on its own.

First of all what is this called?
If I remove it can is be cleaned/oiled or do I need to install a new one?
I’m am pretty handy so I not worried about changing it, disconnect a few wires
and slip in a new one. My main concern is it NOT opening at the proper time and
flooding the house.

Answers
Thats a draft control, if we are talking about the same thing….a T that
goes in the flue. Question is, its got wires to it? As in controlled from
the furnace? Most use a barometric style with a counter weight on it.
If it has an adjustable weight, as most do, it may need to be adjusted, and
the bearings cleaned..not oiled.
It will not need to be open at all times…and if it has a automatic damper
control on it that opens it with 24VAC, you may want to seriously consider
replacing it with a Field Controls or like model. They will not open all the
time, and you will, or may, notice its open even when the furnace is not
running, depending on weather conditions…hence, the reason its called a
barometric flue damper. A tech with training can set it up for your
particular application.

Associated Water Furnace Exhaust Question: Why is there water leaking from the intake & exhaust pipes of my HE furnace?
My high efficiency furnace was installed this summer, so the furnace has only been operating for a month. But recently, I realized at the place where the intake and exhaust pipes connect with the furnace, there’s water sits on top of the furnace. And as the water evaporated, there’s white water marks left. Does anyone know what’s causing this water leaks?

  • Answer:HE furnaces make huge amounts of water – it’s a combustion byproduct. I had one with it’s condensate drain run into a 5 gallon bucket and on cold days it would fill the bucket in 5 or 6 hours. Most of the condensate is collected in the heat exchanger and these furnaces have tubes and pipes to collect this condensate and carry it outdoors on the ground. IN most municipalities it is not legal to run it into the sewer (it is very clean, maybe slightly acidic water – the treatment plant just doesn’t need to waste energy processing it). Some condensate will condense out on the walls of the exhaust pipe. This is typically 2.5″ PVC pipe. The joints are supposed to be glued and the pipe is supposed to be sealed at the top of the furnace with a rubber gasket. This water runs back to the furnace and into the condensate collection system. It sounds like maybe yours isn’t sealed correctly. I’d be more concerned about the carbon monoxide hazard than the leaking condensate….

Associated Water Furnace Exhaust Question: Do furnace exhaust and intake and water hear exhaust pipes have to be 4 feet apart?
We got 4 estimates for a new furnace for our home. Each guy who came to estimate said they could would run the exhaust and intake pipes up through the roof next to the hot water heater exhaust (We have a cape cod house with only a crawl space for a basement so the furnace is on the first floor in a closet). This would bring them out of the back of our roof near the peek. We chose a company and had our new furnace installed today. I heard them drilling on the roof and went outside and saw that they had drilled holes for the pipes in the middle of our roof in the front. They told me they had to change the plan because their was a rule that you had to be 4 feet away from the hot water heater exhaust. At that point there was nothing I could do because they had already drilled holes in the roof, they had run the pipes up into a closet upstairs in my house through the length of the closet and out the roof (originally they said they would go up through the closet straight up through the roof we would lose a shelf in our closet but nothing more). The pipes that are coming out of our roof look awful! If they did what they originally said the pipes would be behind the peek of the roof and would have been hidden by the roof and would have only really been visible a little. The PVC pipes that are in there now look awful, we got a new furnace because we want to sell the house in a few years and these pipes are extremely horrible looking. So here is my question, is it a standard in heating that the pipes for the exhaust and intake for the furnace have to be at least 4 feet away from the exhaust for the hot water heater or did this guy not want to crawl around in the crawl space around the roof? We had for estimators come out to the house and each said they would do it the same way, the guy who installed it said that the sales guy’s don’t always know what they are talking about, well the sales guy went into our crawl spaces and looked around and all 4 sales guys said the same thing (wouldn’t one of them have known we couldn’t vent in the same place?).

  • Answer:Laws vary from state to state on building codes so it is hard for me to say. BUT I can tell you this,- On the newer furnaces there are many safety switches. Exhaust from a gas heater, or from a 90+ efficiency furnace can not be close as the moisture in the exhaust will drift into the intake of your furnace. On the intake pipe for your furnace there is a wire cage to keep out bugs and animals that would like to build a home in your intake pipe. The moisture from an exhaust collects on these wires if they are too close and then they freeze because of the cold air being drawn into the furnace suction. When enough water freezes on these wires a safety switch tells the furnace that it isn’t receiving enough air and your furnace shuts down. The suction for your furnace has to be far enough away from a exhaust vent to keep this from happening. This distance varies from state to state depending upon your average “mean” temperature. Evidently for where you live it is 4 feet. I wouldn’t worry about pipes up through the roof as most people aren’t too concerned about the beauty of a roof other than the color of the shingles.

Associated Water Furnace Exhaust Question: FURNACE exhaust pipe GURGLING WITH WATER?
so we did some work in the basment and i think the exhaust pvc tube got moved, and now it gurgles with some water in it……do i need to raise it so it runs out side? or lower the end closest to the furnace,so it goes back down and is pushed out into the drain by the suction pump on the furnace? thanks it is a gas high effiengcy furnace, about 5 years old… ok the firnace has 2 pvc tubes…1 for cold air intake and the other is the exhaust that goes out of the side of the house……the furnace didn’t get moved just the tube got raised or lowered

  • Answer:You have a condensing furnace… aka 90%. These furnaces harvest additional heat from exhaust gases before it sends it out of your home. The up side is that it drops the temp of the exhaust gas low enough for PVC to be used a venting. Which is convenient. The down side is that the gases are cooled enough to reach dew point and the moisture in it condenses inside the flue and furnace (as opposed to outside). That is why you have a condensate drain and perhaps even a condensate pump. Now, water in the venting. The venting should drain TOWARDS your furnace (4″ every 10′ like sewage). Why towards the furnace? That is where the drain and pump are right? I suppose draining towards the outside wouldn’t be the end of the world as long as it never froze. However, that isn’t likely how the venting instructions from the manufacture specified to do it. So… – You need to get the water out. – You need to have the vent line supported and rising properly. And last, but not least… – You need to be sure your exchanger isn’t clogged and is draining properly. This water is slightly corrosive so being in contact with your exchanger is bad. The carbon monoxide kind of bad. G’luck!

Associated Water Furnace Exhaust Question: My furnace is leaking water at the bottom and from the exhaust pipes leading out to chimney. What’s the cause?
80k btu sears forced aiur funace

  • Answer:Isnt there a drainage hose to accomodate the condensation? Ours leads to a floor drain. I know when it has fallen off a few times theres a big puddle.

Associated Water Furnace Exhaust Question: How can I determine source of “water” in furnace?
I am getting water in my carrier 58pav 80% efficiency furnace through the exhaust vent. Both the inside of the vent and the furnace are corroding. I understand that it is likely either rain getting into the vent, or is due to condensation forming in the chiminey pipe (Most likely because chimney pipe is too large). How can I test and determine which is occuring???

  • Answer:You could put a roof cap on the chimney vent. That would eliminate the rain as a cause and would leave the condensation to deal with. The run of the vent should be made of Type B double wall construction. It should have as few elbows as possible and be of the correct diameter, like you mention. Probably 3 inches. A contractor would have to determine that. I am only a tech. There should be about 2000 ft3/hr of excess air for your size furnace so I would be sure that the draft hood is clear allowing positive pressure all the way outdoors.

Associated Water Furnace Exhaust Question: gas furnace, gas water heater use same chimney. furnace now using different source for exaust,is water heate
:is si alright to use the old chimney for water heater exhaust

  • Answer:Yes, with two conditions. – The abandoned section is capped and sealed. – the flue continues to draft adequately. Your gas supplier can check this for you with a CO detector. .

Associated Water Furnace Exhaust Question: How much should it cost to install a furnace and hot water heater?
It’s a conversion from oil to gas. The old oil-based units are being replaced. The gas line is already in place. The air ducts are already in place. The only thing changed will be the venting. Instead of the chimney flue, the new furnace will need to get a PVC exhaust vent. My plumber quoted me $7,000 in labor and the hot water heater – I buy the furnace separately. That seems outrageous for two days worth of work. What do you think?

  • Answer:Ours is costing us $3800 for the furnace [96% efficient "Trane" brand] and installation, and an additional $800 if we want a new gas water heater. The furnace is sized for a three bedroom home, approx 2200 sq feet. This includes all parts, labor, and removal/disposal of old furnace and water heater. This did “not” include draining and/or removal of our oil storage tank. Price is in Minnesota

Associated Water Furnace Exhaust Question: urnace exhaust vent?
have to replace furnace exhaust vent elbows going out of the house. I cut the pcv pipe and out came a bunch of water. I know this is condensation from the exhaust gases. do I slope the pipe towards the furnace to cure the water problem? This is a high effeceint furnace. former owner hit the exhaust vent with tractor i guess and broke two elbows on it. Thanks Thanks for the advice everyone. 2 1/4 pcv pipe coming out the foundation. Found another pipe inside about 1 ft long. What is the inside pipe for?

  • Answer:It is OK to slope to the furnace because there is a condensate drain at the low point inside the furnace. It is also OK to slope outside if you use the proper fitting so it can drain (you can install a tee with outlets facing up and down). It is not OK to have the line run flat or have a low spot. Water will condense in the line and it must have a definite path to get out or it will restrict the flow of gasses. I recommend having the complete line slope back to the furnace so you don’t have a problem with water and ice outdoors.

Associated Water Furnace Exhaust Question: Where will furnace exhaust go?
Is there a danger of furnace exhaust backing up and leaking into the cellar during a heavy snow? The installers of the new furnace fit a 5″ diameter elbow into the existing vertical line with a 5 1/2″ diameter. Due to damage to the exhaust hood, rain water was entering the vertical section and dripping on the cellar floor at the ill-fitted junction.

  • Answer:You are risking damaging the surrounding roof or wall structure to exposure to rain/snow, but you need not worry about that moisture making it’s way to your unit. Repair the flue or install a new goose-head cover.

Associated Water Furnace Exhaust Question: Why would a capped furnace exhaust stack leak?
The exhaust from my furnace and water heater join into the stack which goes directly up to the roof. This stack is capped – I took off the bottom part of the joint and looked upwards and saw the underside of the cap. However, during strong storms the bottom of the joint drips onto the basement floor. Also, the floorboards adjacent to where the duct enters the floor above seem to be damp. I checked the cap and stack today and I don’t see any visible breaks – the cap is the type that has four vents going downward, covered. Maybe it’s horizontal rain from strong winds? Maybe there’s a leak elsewhere – how would I check for this?

  • Answer:There is alot of moisture in the exhaust from these items, it could be that the corners in the vent are preventing it from escaping completly. Have a HVAC expert check it out.

Tempstar Furnace

Question
I recently had my ductwork cleaned and my furnace checked.  The technician
advised me that I had cracks in a heat exchanger plate and this would need
to be replaced.  First off, does this sound reasonable?  Would there be any
way to simply repair the cracks without having to remove the plate?

Although the part is under warranty from Tempstar, the factory is charging a
$120.00 factory handling fee to get the part to my contractor.  This sounds
weird, since I would imagine that $120.00 more than covers not only getting
the part from a warehouse, but also the cost of the part.  The furnace is
almost 9 years old now.

My contractor has told me that the this particular Tempstar furnace is very
unreliable and that I can expect other things to go bad such as the heat
exchanger itself or the blower motor.  They gave me a quote on a new Carrier
furnace ( around $1800 installed ).  Since repairing the heat exchanger
plate will cost something like $600.00 anyway, I wonder if I’d be better off
long term just starting with a new furnace which presumably will be more
reliable.

Answers
I think this guy is just trying to sell you a new furnace.  If it is
under warranty I would replace the heat exchanger.

Is this an upright or horiz furnace?  If it is an upright with
individual cells and a center panel I would always replace the center
panel and all the cells under warranty.

Most companies around here would charge $300 to $400 to replace a heat
exchanger under warranty.

I would call around to some other companies, or call the dist to see
if this $120 charge is right.

Associated Tempstar Furnace Question: Tempstar Furnace not starting at all – What are things that can be checked?
The Furnace model is a Tempstar N9MP2100F14C2. When I start it up, there is no fan sound or motor. There is a small humming noise that maybe comes from the board. The LED lights up and after about 30 second, it starts flashing 3 times. Checked the hoses if they are plugged, but no issues. What are things that I can check before I call a tech? Please help. Its says about the 3 flashes on the inside: Pressure switch open when it should be closed or pressure switch closed when should be open How can I check if the pipe to the outside has anything (Birds/nests) in it? Please let me know. Thanks a lot…

  • Answer:The code 3 likely refers to the combustion air switch not closing. The humming noise is likely the inducer motor trying to run. Either the bearings on the motor are locked up, or there is something in the inducer wheel housing that is preventing the motor from turning. It is not uncommon for birds to go down the flue pipe and get stuck in the squirrel cage, especially after you turn it on for the first time of the season.

Associated Tempstar Furnace Question:how can I find specifications on an existing tempstar/sears furnace?
I am concidering replacing my existing furnace. I would like to know the specifications for the one I have so I can evaluate efficiency savings and such. Problem is that the Tempstar web site doesn’t have any informaion on existing furnaces; only info on new models. DON”T EVER BUY A TEMPSTAR!!!! I never will again.

  • Answer:You might want to try sears. check with the service dept, they may have the specs. As to a new unit, most new systems will out perform their predecessors. Simply check with your local hvac service for their recommendations as to the size of unit would work best in your application. Hope you find what you need.

Associated Tempstar Furnace Question::Tempstar Furnace (3) flashing led code error?
I just installed a tempstar single stage 92% efficiency furnace and the thing wont fire up. i can get the fan going, but the burners wont fire up. It’s giving me a 3 flash LED error…something to do with the pressure switch.

  • Answer:Check your PVC sizes are they sized right per mfg specs.also your discharge pipe should be pitched back toward the heater so condensate can drain out and not lay in the pipe witch would cause the pressure switch not to make, and the burners not fire.

Associated Tempstar Furnace Question:don’t know where the gas valve is to my tempstar furnace?
I have turned on the thermostat in my living room, programmed all the desired temperatures but nothing is happening. The directions on the furnace say it lights its self, but I’am thinking the gas may be off to it, but I can’t find the gas valve to it. Help………1st time home owners.

  • Answer:Follow the gas line. It always leads to the gas valve near the furnace. If the valve is on, the lever will be in line with the pipe. If the valve is off, the lever will be perpendicular to the pipe. Also be sure all the emegency switces for tha ac power are ‘on’.

Associated Tempstar Furnace Question:The burners fail to light on my Tempstar gas furnace?
The inducer motor starts and the igniter pilot lights, stays on for about two seconds, then goes off. The burners do not light. If I unplug the furnace for a few minutes, The burners will start for a few seconds when it is plugged in. This is an intermittent problem.

  • Answer:”Intermittent problems” sounds like one of the new fangled electronically controlled furnaces because usually the old fashion thermocouple/gas valve furnaces work or they don’t. *L* Easiest, cheapest thing to do is check all the electrical connections (including grounds). If this doesn’t solve the problem then the fun (and expense) begins – checking components… One frequently overlooked problem w/both types of furnaces is low incoming gas pressure. Normally your gas supplier will check (and adjust) this at no charge. It’s best to have the pressure at the more than the furnace manufacturer’s minimum to allow for any excursion caused by high gas system demand.

Associated Tempstar Furnace Question:Has anyone had problems with Tempstar High Efficiency Furnace?
:My furnace was only putting out 50 degrees Farenheit or 10 degrees Celcius during the winter. The installer came and said they couldn’t get any more heat out of it. It’s brand new.

  • Answer:This is not a brand issue. If you have a furnace that will only put out 50 degree air then you have a problem with the company who installed it. There are only a handful of things that can cause this problem. They need to use a monometer to check the gas pressure and be sure it is set correctly. They need to be sure they are not pulling return air from an unconditioned space. Did they do some sort of energy survey to size the furnace or did they just shoot from the hip? Maybe the furnace is to small. Call them back and insist they make it right.

Associated Tempstar Furnace Question:I have a Tempstar Furnace that is not coming on.?
Earlier today, we had problems with a fuse being tripped, which caused our televisions to go off. We were able to make that work again. Now the problem appears to be the furnace is not coming on. We tried tripping the furnace button, but the heat still does not come on . What should we do?

Associated Tempstar Furnace Question:My new Tempstar 92% single stage furnace short cycles even with new 6″ supply runs. Any ideas ?
Combustion line to outdoors is 2″ pvc. I think it requires 3″. Would this cause the short cycling ?

  • Answer:sounds like either your furnace is too large for your application or not enough return air. If you take the blower door off and tape door switch in and run without door on it and it still does it than its too large. If it doesnt short cycle with door off and return and make sure the filter is clean

Associated Tempstar Furnace Question:why doesn’t my tempstar 5000 furnace start ? we get spark from igniter but wont let the main gas flow start!?
we turn it on at the thermostat ,blower comes on a few seconds later the igniter starts clicking countinuosly but nothing else happens please help!

  • Answer:If the flue induction fan is running, and the igniter is working the first thing to check would be the flue itself. if the flue is restricted, you will not get vac. to the switch, not letting the gas valve open. If the flue is open check to see if the vac switch is closing.

Associated Tempstar Furnace Question:My tempstar furnace gurgles from the condensate drain. Looking for a repair. anyone with an answer?
I have been told that there should be a P trap in this line any help is very much appreciated

  • Answer:why its working

Tempstar Furnace Parts

Question
The contractors explanation was that the newer coils are long (my current
one is 14 inchs tall) and the newer furnaces are shorter, so a new coil
with my old furnace wont fit the space – does that sound feasible? I
really wish I had a contractor in the family so i could get the straight
dope.
a 2k fix sounds great to me, however if it is a patch, I’d rather bite the
bullet now and get the tax credit.
I hate not knowing at least the exact $$ i am dealing with in parts so I
can compare with sound information. When I asked him point blank what the
exact cost of the furnace was he said about 1950 – so im paying 4k in
labor? Oh No, we also have to provide the coil, freon for the old unit etc
etc etc. I know they need to make thier money, but why can’t it be in
black and white? The only reason I can see for them not disclosing prices,
is so they can charge whatever they feel I will pay. I am getting the
feeling a coil is in the 1k area on price and if I need to replace the ac
in the near future I will be paying that 1k again to get a compatible coil.

Inside the “furnace” or the “air-handler”? My daughter’s Lennox LOOKS
like the AC is part of the furnace, but it is two parts – and if she
had no intention of installing AC they would have installed the
furnace with ductwork all the way to the “furnace” without the
additional “air handler”. If, in the future, she needed to replace the
AC unit and the new one didn’t fit the “air handler” it could be
replaced with custom duct work with the evaporator coil mounted in it
- same as the older AC unit is installed on my new Tempstar.
Here in Canada, where things are generally more expensive, the
complete furnace and AC unit, installed, including all new ducting in
the basement due to totally relocating the furnace, cost $8000 with
DC variable speed fan and high seasonal efficiency AC. It is a condo
as well, and the condenser/compressor unit is pad mounted at ground
level.

Associated Tempstar Furnace Parts Question: Should I replace the heat exchanger on my 1996 furnace or replace it?
My gas company red-tagged my furnace due to carbon monoxide leaking, because of a failed heat exchanger. Should I get the heat exchanger replaced for $1000 (parts and labor) or just get a new furnace for about $3500? The furnace is a 1996 Tempstar 90% efficiency model.

  • Answer:The heat exchanger is probably under warranty. Check with a tempstar dealer. There wouldn’t be any reason to buy a whole new furnace. You will not gain much in energy efficiency. For more info check out the furnace page at my source.

Tank Furnace

Question

Just replaced the crushed Oil Line from the Oil tank to the furnace.
(Got crushed by falling wood pile in celar (dont ask). Furnace runs
fine, doesn’t over pressurize etc. However circ pump doesn’t start.
Since we just moved into the house, we turned on a hot water heater we
found in the celar that had the circuit breaker turned off. Wanted to
use that while we waited to get the oil line replaced. My thought is
that since the hot water tank was on, the circ pump on the furnace
wont start because their’s hot water already in the line? Just doesn’t
sound right. Turned off the water pump for the night hopping the
furnace circ pump will eventually kick in. Am I way off base? Furnace
didn’t run for about 3 weeks. How can i force circ pump on to see if
it’s not frozen up (it looks like about 10 years old. Any ideas would
be greatly appreciated.
Dont have any idea on how to blead the lines, read that in another
post.

It could be a control switch keeping it from coming on true. Try tracing back
from the motor with a voltage meter and see where it leads. See if you have
juice before and after each control. go from there

Associated Tank Furnace Question: Is it ok if a little gasoline got mixed with the oil in my oil tank furnace?
I had an empty 1 gallon container (which i normally use for gasoline), rinsed it out and i filled it with diesel oil for my home’s oil tank. Is it ok if a small amount of gasoline was mixed with the oil and i pour into the tank? Will the heater explode?

  • Answer:I am more curious with what you used to rinse it out? In any event, if you are using this as fuel to burn in a furnace, a small residual should not affect the function or increase your danger in any way. Generally, there is little danger with diesel’s ‘flash point’, and much more with gasoline. So, the “empty” container actually posed a greater risk. As far as your furnace, with the tiny amount of gasoline contaminant you note, (way less than 1%), I would not give it a second thought.

Associated Tank Furnace Question:ct:How far of a distance does a 100# propane tank have to be to operate a furnace in the home?
Am using a 100 lb. propane bottle for emergency heating on my home furnace. The tank is located out in my back yard approx. 60 ft. I has a high pressure regulator on it and other low pressure on the house going to the furnace. For some reason the furnace gets warm but not like it did with a 500 gal. tank. I am wandering if I am pushing fuel too far of a distance. High pressure regulator came off of my 500 gal.

  • Answer:The distance will not matter. If you have 30 psi at the tank, you will have 30 psi at the heater. What you will encounter is a problem with the volume of gas you are trying to supply to the heater. This is caused by using a pipe diameter that is too small. 1/2 inch pipe or bigger will be good for up to 100 feet. I am not an expert in gas technologies, but I have a good deal of experience in hydraulics and pneumatics, and HVAC, Pressure is pressure, but volume can change everything.

Associated Tank Furnace Question:How much does it generally cost to get propane heat (tank, furnace, ect) in a home?
Cant stand the oil fumes anymore.

  • Answer:depends upon where you live and the cost of the propane but generally two thousand dollars 1000 for the tank rent and propane 1000 for the heater you might have some assembly

Associated Tank Furnace Question:Is a pressure regulator necessary when connecting a 100# tank to an Empire wall furnace? If so, what type?
I have a 100# propane tank that I want to connect to a 35,000 BTU Empire wall furnace in my garage. Can I simply buy a hose with fittings to connect to the tank and the furnace or do I need to add a pressure regulator? If so, what kind of regulator do I need?

Associated Tank Furnace Question:How much oil should I leave in the home furnace tank after winter?
The company I purchase the oil from says that I should keep it FULL over the summer? The guy I sude to service the furnace says it doesn’t matter; even keeping it AS LOW AS 1/4 FILLED is OK What’s your experiance/knowledge?

  • Answer:It is best to leave it full as that will keep down the moisture building up in the unfilled area. The service tech either didn’t know what he was talking about or he just told you that so he can get a service call from you next year.

Associated Tank Furnace Question:How do I get rid of an old oil furnace tank?
I have a oil tank in my basement. I know that I need to drain the oil out and disconnect all of the lines. But what is the best way to cut it into smaller easier to handle pieces? Is the sawzall the best option?

  • Answer:A reciprocating saw (Sawzall) is the only thing I have ever used . I have removed several oil tanks from basements in my day. You don’t have to worry about sparks starting a fire. Fuel oil needs to be atomized to burn. Nothing will happen. Where I live, if you are disposing of an old oil tank, it must be cut in half and thoroughly cleaned before it is scrapped.

Associated Tank Furnace Question:New oil tank for home furnace?
I had a new oil furnace installed in the crawl space under my mobile home. Now I need a new tank, which is now outdoors. A rep for Irving Oil recommended that I put it in the garage, which is under a new addition. The problem is that the tank would be about 8 feet lower than the furnace. How will the oil get to the furnace without a pump ? They say it will work without one. Anyone know for sure ? Thanks

  • Answer:An oil pump in a oil furnace is used to pressurize the oil that exits the nozzle at the right spray and angle. It does pump oil ,but is not meant to PULL oil from 8ft. below it. Oil furnaces are designed to be GRAVITY fed. What oil rep worth his salt doesn’t know that!! Pick an area that allows a level or higher flow of oil for oil furnace… And consider this.. When its winter and the temp is 0 degree and the oil is as thick as Karol syrup, do you think that oil rep is going to come out . nope!!!!!

Associated Tank Furnace Question:mixing oil and gasoline in a oil tank for a furnace?
My oil company told me to buy gas for my oil furnace. Than denied it after my girlfriend stopped me after putting in a gallon. I shut off furnace. Than the oil co, put 90 gal of oil in my tank and told me it was fine. The repair person the recommended agreed it was fine. Is it?

  • Answer:At 90:1 you will be fine. In fact the little bit of gasoline will help to clean the drip orifice and such. Light away, it’s all good. Noah

Associated Tank Furnace Question:birds made a nest in the vent stack from my hot water tank/furnace – any ways of clearing it ????
tried a couple different ways of clearing it – the vent stack liner runs through the chimney – nest stuck somewhere up in there – tried using weight attached to string and droppping it down the vent liner – but not working well expensive to get done i heard – i also tried a drain snake from both ends………….help – needs to vent properly……

  • Answer:Try blowing it out with a vacuum cleaner by hooking up to the exhaust end .

Associated Tank Furnace Question:Is there any danger to house occupants or furnace if oil tank runs out of oil?
s there any danger to house occupants or furnace if oil tank runs out of oil?

  • Answer:There is no danger to occupants but it is not good on the furnace to let it run out of oil. All of the sediments in the bottom of the tank can be sucked into the furnace and cause the nozzle and/or the filter to get clogged. If it did run out make sure you have a service tech check it out after you get if filled. And please don’t only put 5 gallons in it and tell the tech that it has plenty, they tend to get really frustrated when that happens! :-)
