What Is Wrong With A Lenox Furnace

Question
I have a Lennox Complete Heat system which has had it’s share of problems.
It was just replaced because of corrosion.  Now I see in the new owner’s
manual that they say that 3 inch PVC venting pipe should be used for my sized
unit for any run greater than 20 feet.  Mine is connected to 2 inch piping on
intake and exhaust.  When I add up the length and add 5 feet for each 90
degree elbw and 2 1/2 feet for every 45 degree elbow and add 17 feet for the
termination kit, like the manual says, I come up with 78 feet!  Can anyone
tell me how that might affect my unit?  The manual talks about “input
ratings”.  Can anyone explain to me what t

I don’t have exactly the answer you seek, but our building officials insist on
another venter fan in line, for any vent over forty(40) feet in calculated
length.

Lenox Furnace

Question
I can’t afford to have someone come do this for me and it is getting
COLD! I have a 16 month old toddler and cannot let the house get any
colder than it has been. Please help me with replacing the parts
myself.
It is a Lenox furnace and it needs a new spark igniter and I need to
replace the tubing from the pressure switch, the note the estimate
says it is 1 1/2″ exhaust/condensate. I also need to know how I can
order these parts to fix it, according to the HVAC company I need to
get them directly from Lennox?

PLEASE HELP! (I am in the Chicago area if anyone wants to come tell me
in person how to fix it and in exchange I can offer a good home cooked
Italian meal ;) …wish I could offer more ;(

Associated Lenox Furnace Question: why does lenox pulse 21 furnace not blow out of the registers very good?
my lenox pulse 21 furnace seems like it is not putting out enough heat at the registers around the house it seems like the air flow is restricted

Associated Lenox Furnace Question: I have a Lenox mid efficiency furnace that ignites the burner, then goes out in about 2 seconds?
The burner cycles like this until it is reset then works ok for several days. Which sensor could be causing this?

  • Answer:there is a heat sensitive sensor that will turn off the fuel if it doesn’t see the flame, sense the heat. this is a safety feature for obvious reasons. I would suggest having it serviced by a qualified technician.

Associated Lenox Furnace Question: trying to find any and all info on a lenox furnace model #g12q3e-110-10..have searched web..????

  • Answer:pdfs/manuals/Lennox G12 Manual.pdf you need to type the address including the source below. For some reason I am unable to make this a clickable link for you. Be sure to leave the spaces as seen above.

Associated Lenox Furnace Question: my furnace has a pilot and is clicking but main burners not ignighting, why?
it is a lenox whisper air. I got it to turn on after scraping the heat sensor with a screw driver but i think it might be a fluke. am i on the right track? just want to clearify that there is a pilot flame at all times, and the screw driver was used to be able to reach in far enough without disasembling. I am very technicaly enclined but am not familiar with this system. Shoukld there always be a pilot light flame and if so why is there an ignighter? seems silly to be lighting a lit flame but it may be there incase the pilot ever blew out! How does the heat sencor work is like an old thermocouple.

  • Answer:You maybe on the right track. Your clicking you hear is probably your spark ignition still trying to light your pilot that is already burning. If the sensor does not sense pilot it will not light main burner for safety. Your sensor maybe going bad or the wire that leads to the ignition module is loose or the probe or the module itself is going bad. On some systems the pilot does stay lit. On others it will be only be on when unit calls for it. This is to keep you from having to keep lighting the pilot. It works by the flame creating a complete circuit to the ignition module. Its a DC circuit the flame is creating a negative current to flow to the ignition module. If it is still operating since you last worked on it, it was probably loose wiring, but if you are still having problems change the sensor first, its the cheapest way to start. If it doesn’t work change the module, and if it was the module don’t worry about that having to change the sensor cause i would recommend you change the sensor anyway with a new module.

Associated Lenox Furnace Question: Where is whole house humidifier located?
We have a Honeywell humidistat by our thermostat but do not know where the unit itself is. ?? I assume that it is attached to the furnace, but where? The humidistat does not have a model number on it so I have no idea what model the unit may be (or if it’s even installed). Our Lenox furnace was replaced with a new model prior to our moving in- if the humidifier is there I’m sure we need to clean/change the filter etc. Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Answer:Like Melvin stated it should be mounted to your return air plenum at the furnace……and it would be noticeable. It would have a ¼ inch {hopefully copper} water line connected, and a short 6” duct running fro the supply return air plenum. There is a possibility that when the furnace was replaced the humidifier was not. Associated Lenox Furnace Question: No heat! No heat From my furnace?
I have an old Lenox G12 natural gas furnace that is not producing any heat. I’ve turned off the pilot and relit it again with a nice flame. When the fan comes on the flame diminishes somewhat but stays on. However the burner tubes are not lighting up and there is no heat. P.S. There was a slight gas odor when we got home from work. I don’t have much $$$ to fix this. Certainly not enough to take time off of work and hire a professional. How does one clean the blowers or do any other do-it-yourself remedy? Well everything has been turned off for now.

  • Answer:How much money is your families lives worth? 100 bucks? Get it serviced now, it sounds like you have a cracked heat exchanger. Any change in flame when fan kicks in is a very good indication that the heat exchanger may be comprimised. Do not hesitate, call someone, Carbon Monoxide can kill you and your family!

Associated Lenox Furnace Question: central heat system does not turn on?
The central heat/ac on the home does not seem to turn on. I thought the thremostat may be bad and I replaced a new one. The heat turns on but ons it turns off, It does ot turn on again when the temerature falls down. I diagnosed all known problems including thermocoupler, pilot lamp, gas line the blinking lights indicate that everything is fine. Often the heater runs fine for a couple of days again it drops dows. When I am thinking to fix it, heater starts by itself and again house becomes warm. Any clue is that a relay problem or a presure switch. If either of these, how do i locate these in a lenox furnace (4 yr old) Thanks If it is relay or the pressure switch, if i call some one, how much would it cost incl parts and labor

Associated Lenox Furnace Question: HVAC Blower Motor Won’t Come On?
I have a lenox pulse furnace and a goodman industries condensor. When the thermostat set temperature goes below the house temperature the compressor/condensor turns on, but the blower unit in the furnace sometimes turns on – it seems to work if I turn the power off on the furnace and then turn it on – sometimes it takes several times. I replaced the thermostat this winter for the blower not coming on at all and I just replaced the capacitor on the blower with a new one. HELP! Thanks.

  • Answer:either the blower motor is bad or the relay is bad.

Associated Lenox Furnace Question: How much is your natural gas bill?
I am trying to get an idea if my natural gas bill is “in line” or if it would pay to insulate my attic. I have a 2700 sq ft brick ranch with no basement in Dayton Ohio. I have a 92% efficient Lenox gas furnace. New efficient windows and exterior doors, but little insulation in the attic. Also installed programmable thermostat. I have only been here since May, but it appears my natural gas bill will be about $175-$200/mo on level billing, based upon use so far this winter. Right now natural gas is going for about $1.28 per ccf including all taxes. Insulating the attic will cost about $2,000. If doing so only will save me about 20%, it will take between 4-5 years to amortize the cost and I may not be in this house that long. I have also looked into doing it myself, but it would only save $300-$400 and it is a hard attic to work in. I only keep the thermostat around 63 degrees and am not home a lot. I am cold a lot but it just runs and runs if I boost it up to 65. When I am not home and at night I keep it at 60 degrees Thanks, in advance, for any and all comments. Jim

  • Answer:I have a 1100 sq ft ranch with bad windows. I bought the house with little blown in insulation, and my bills were avg 120-150 mo with heat at 70/64 i added 12″ of fiberglass to the attic, cost me about 200.00 for all the insulation, and I put it in myself. Also I added high/low returns through out the house, and also added a power humidifier, Now I can keep the heat at 68/62 and it feels even warmer, and my bills are down to 70.00 a month.

Intertherm Furnace

Question
I have a few ? about the workings of this furnace.
Intertherm
I anyone knows anything about this make it has a
Beckett motor and that’s about all I can find.

The problem is that it works interminably.
I read that the fuel filter gets clogged sometimes.
But I could not find the fuel filter on the line.
The other possible problem is the Oil burner ignition transformer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answers
hi.. furnaces should be serviced by experienced individuals who are familiar
with all safety requirements, and a working knowlege of what types of
problems constitute safety hazards.

With that said, fuel oil furnaces require regular maintenance (and more
maintenance when they’re improperly installed). Most installations require
separate fuel filters in the oil supply line.
When filters aren’t installed, rust flakes or other particles are delivered
to the pump. Fuel oil should be treated with an approved stabilizer at
appropriate times.. fungal growth can occur in stored fuel oil.

Audel publishing has an excellent book covering installation, service,
repair, maintenance and operational information.. i’d reveal the title if i
knew where it was. The book i’m referring to is one of a 3 volume set
covering fuel oil, gas and other heating systems.
You might want to check your local library.

Some key trouble points (which are critical to proper and safe operation) in
fuel oil burner systems are.. the spray nozzle, the pump, combustion air
blower and pump shaft coupler, the HV coil and ignitor electrode tips, and
the flame sensor.
The spray nozzle should be the type specified on a data tag on the furnace.
These usually contain a sintered bronze-type filter/strainer.
The pump will likely have an internal fine mesh screen on the suction/supply
port. This screen prevents contamination from damaging the pump vanes and
bore.
Some systems bypass the fuel to a return line.

The white smokey-looking vapor seen when fuel is sprayed into a hot
combustion chamber (after the flame has died due to a malfunction), will
ignite explosively if the ignitor should happen to start working again.

Other points concerning fuel oil burners are the pressure regulator,
bleeding air from the oil passages, the air mixture shutter, and leaking
connections. I don’t recall what the range of the pressure from the pump is,
but the pump is essentially a hydraulic pump, so leaks are a serious
problem.
Leaks on the suction/supply side can aerate the fuel.

With the many considerations applicable to these heating systems, it should
be easy to unserstand why professional service is needed. Being cold, and
funerals are both unpleasant.

Associated Intertherm Furnace Question: I have intertherm furnace and air and the furnace stays on when thermostat is off and when in cool position.?
I changed thermostat to try to fix it but didn’t.help. its total electric. The heating coil stays on and the fan. Its total electric and I changed thermostat to try to fix it and it didn’t help. And I made sure it was on proper setting for total electric. But the air worked great until I turned furnace on 1st time this year then furnace just keeps running coil and fan.

Associated Intertherm Furnace Question:Intertherm electric furnace?
We have a Intertherm electric furnace in our mobile home. The a/c works but the heat won’t come on. Does anyone have any suggestions? My thermostat is turned on auto. And if you turn the heat on you can feel the thermostat click but nothing happens.

  • Answer:There are so many things that it could be, but start with the basics. Is your thermostat turned to either Heat, or Auto. It needs to be on one of these settings for the heat to come on. Is the temperature set to at least 3 or 4 degrees below the room temp. Check the breakers or fuses for the furnace, sometimes the heating, and cooling parts are on separate circuits. If the fan that circulates the air is running check to see if the heating element is heating up. You can tell, because it will turn orange, like the element in an electric oven. If not, check to see if it has an obvious break, or crack in the element. There several more things to check, but they call for test equipment, like an ohm meter or continuity tester, and should be left to a professional.

Associated Intertherm Furnace Question:i have an intertherm furnace and i was wondering hhow to change the speeds on the blower i have already tried?
switching the wires around like the manual says but i have not noticed any difference in the speed

  • Answer:first off why are you trying to change speeds? unless you are adjusting temp rise…dont some blowers are not adjustable some have an A B & C on a connector on the motor housing and you switch the hot lead there. some blowers have 3,4, or 5 leads that tap onto the board. on these boards there are “park”, heat and cool taps as well as the nuetral or common tap. the heat speed comes on in heat or when there is a “G” call the cool speed comes on with a “G” + “Y” call the cool speed is usually one speed higher than the heat speed. Associated Intertherm Furnace Question::Where do you find the reset button on an Intertherm electric furnace?
My furnace quit working after a power outtage and I have checked all the breakers. I suspect there is a reset button that I can’t find. Can anyone help? It’s kinda cold where I’m at.

  • Answer:Shut the power off and wait a few minutes then power it on. That may clear any errors it has and reset it.

Associated Intertherm Furnace Question:Where to find the reset button on an Intertherm electric furnace?
My furnace quit working after a power outtage and I have checked all the breakers. I suspect that there is a reset button somewhere that I can’t find. HELP! It’s cold here!

  • Answer:The only reset button may be on the elements themselves. Usually a reset is done automatically. If you had a surge when the power came back on then you may have blown internal electrical in the system itself. Time to call a HVAC professional I think.

Associated Intertherm Furnace Question:i have a intertherm furnace, the heat works fine, but ac wont shut of when the thermostat turns it off.?
its a two wire furnace, i followed the directions on the thermostat completely, when i first turned ac on, it worked fine, but now wont shut off even when the thermostat shuts it off, im wondering about the thermostate relay on the furnace.

  • Answer:The most likely cause of the a/c running is a stuck fan relay or fan controller in the furnace. Some Intertherm furnaces use a device to keep the fan running for around 2 minutes after the a/c unit shuts off to make use of “free” residual cooling. The fan off delays are known to stick also. If the Intertherm furnace is located in a mobile home, it is also common for the furnace to have a switch (usually black) that can keep the fan in continuous mode. (this is not likely the problem) If the furnace is a very new model the fan is controlled by a printed circuit board with small black relays and you will not be able to do anything except change the board.

Associated Intertherm Furnace Question::Intertherm furnace codes-can anyone help me?
furnace ignitor and gas valve has been replaced. Furnace ignites, but goes out after about 5 seconds. Flashes the code 3

  • Answer:Clean the deposits off the flame sensor with steel wool or fine sandpaper. This is a small rod located in front of the burners. If it’s dirty it won’t tell the board theres flame present and it will “lock out.” Hope this helps.

Associated Intertherm Furnace Question:Intertherm gas furnace limit circuit open/ temp switch?
My heater is broke. How do I fix it myself? There should be a big fast air moving fan, and there doesn’t seem to be.

  • Answer:The heat exchanger high limit temp switch will open its contact points if the furnace is getting too hot, and if the blower fan isnt running like you stated will definetly cause it to over heat as well a few other things. This you will have to get checked and repaired by a qualified tech

Furnace Flue Booster Fan

Question
From your descrip, it sounds like it might be a booster fan to move the
flue
gasses up the pipe. Sometimes those have an oil hole on each end of the
motor. Couple drops of SAE 20 or SAE 30 oil might quiet things down.
Answers
I couldn’t really figure out what it was exactly. My motivation for
figuring things out is so that I can have a constructive brainstorm
with a gas contractor. This way I feel a little in control and would
prevent him from spending time and replace unnecessary parts.
CY: Yes, some contractors spend a long time throwing parts at it.

Not being a gas specialist, I only looked and reasoned, to the best of
my abilities, and I knew it had to be a 3rd moving part. Not the main
fan, not the blower, something else. The loud humming/buzzing was
coming from higher up I thought.

So, ok, in the middle of a snow storm, the furnace stopped working.
The gas guy took a while, but together, I was able to work through
things logically. He started to take things apart, and told me it
looks like the large main fan motor. I told him that when I put the
thermostat’s switch fan position to ‘on’ instead of ‘auto’, the fan
sounds like it’s moving air quite nicely. He measured the amperage
how much the motor was drawing, looked normal.

After he took the front of the furnace apart, and started the motor,
he now thought the motor was running well, and the noise was indeed
coming from elsewhere.

Then, bingo. Right outside the house there is a little box with
‘power vent’ written on it. It’s built into a small metal cage, and
mounted on the outside of the house. In it, there is a motor that
sucks the air out, and assists in flowing the exhaust out. There is a
small solid line that runs inside to another small box with a sensor
in it. If the sensor says that the venting is working well, it tells
the furnace it’s good to go.
The motor is stuck and is making a humming and buzzing kind of noise.
CY: Please remit $47.50 for diagnosis.

Needless to say, this box being outside results in a shorter lifespan
than if this fan had been inside just before the pipe exits the house.
By the looks of the manuals of Lennox, it looks like this suction
exhaust thingy (power vent thing) is optional, because the other fan
normally blows the air out of the furnace. The exhaust is on the side
of the house. The exhaust from furnace to outside is about 6 or 7
feet.

Now the fun part. This part is not in stock and needs to be ordered
from the manufacturer. The number is SWG-4HD. I have no idea what
this thing is going to cost me. If anyone could tell me, that would
help.
CY: I don’t have that information. But I’m sure I could find out with a
couple phone calls.

Luckily, I have a gas fireplace, and it keeps half the house
relatively warm. The cat looks very comfortable, I think I might join
him ;-)
Tomorrow I’ll find out more about this mistery part. Stay tuned.

Thanks to all giving me feedback btw. I’m not taking any chances and
will not risk blowing myself up, and am leaving the real work to a
professional ;-)
CY: You sound like an informed customer. Hacks hate you, and sincere folks
like you.
