Water Heater Furnace

Question
I have a Nordyne gas atmospheric furnace. It ran trouble free for four
years. Then last year when I moved I had it converted to propane. The smell
of the gas odorizer has been in the house ever since. It was around the
water heater, too. I solved that by putting in an electric water heater. But
replacing a furnace is more expensive. How much of that propane odorizer
smell is normal? I soaped everything and there was no sign of a leak. I
replaced all the pipes and valves to the gas valve on the furnace and soap
suds it again. No leak. With the gas turned on and the furnace valve off,
there is no smell, but when the furnace has been running for five minutes,
there is that smell near the gas valve. The water heater did the same thing.
I checked for negative draft, opened the house doors and some windows,
no difference. It draws enough to pull a match flame into the inspection
port. I do notice the flame is yellow, not blue like it was with natural
gas. I’ve had both the setup people and the gas company that did the
conversion tell me that everything is ok, but if the smell is there, is gas
there, too? I don’t feel comfortable with it like it is. Any suggestions?

You know I am not a service tech….I have had LP gas many times in the past
and have never had the gas odor at all, except when there was a problem
(which is why the oderizer is mixed with the gas) or when the tank was very
low on gas…The key to your post is the yellow flame…It is not supposed
to be yellow….The very blue flame is when the gas is burning
efficiently…It is funny that the water heater did the same…The major
cause is the use of the wrong orifice…When the LP is installed the
installer is supposed to change the orifice on both the furnace and the
waterheater…Using the wrong orifice causes the LP to burn very
ineffienctly and can cause all of the problems you have mentioned..Usually
the part is shipped with the furnace and was taped on or attached to the gas
line near the valve..It is kind of like a flow restrictor that fits into the
gas line…Do you have a gas stove and see a yellow flame.?..This is also
caused by the same thing…You should not be smelling anything…You might
want to try another gas tech…or a gas furnace tech familiar with LP…Good
Luck

Associated Water Heater Furnace Question: gas smell from water heater, furnace making buzzing sound?
The furnace has been making quite a loud buzzing sound before it kicks on. It has worried me, so I went into the laundry room (where gas heater / gas water heater are) to move stuff away from the heater. When I was bent over picking up something I smelled gas near the hot water heater. Help! My roommate isn’t home, I don’t know what to do. I turned the heat down to like 55 degrees so the heat won’t kick on as often. The heat does come on eventually. That wouldn’t happen if the pilot light was out right?

  • Answer:You should take this seriously. Normally there is NO smell of gas from either heater and/or water heater. There can be a small release of unburned gas (which you would smell) just before the burner comes on…but this is not normal or consistent…if the burner does come on then yes, the pilot light is working…but there may be a delay between the thermostat telling the burner to come on and it actually doing it…during this slight delay there is gas being released and you can smell it…getyour gas company down to check it out !

Associated Water Heater Furnace Question: What kind of landlord does this? Furnace. water heater question?
Old house. theres a water heater/furnace you have to refill by yourself whenever it goes low. So in order to keep warm you have to keep re-filling it. If you leave your home in the winter you will return to pipes burst and an ice cold unsafe home. They burst last winter when only gone for a couple days from the house. They came in and replaced it and put in the same exact kind. The one you have to refill when its gets cold. What is wrong with these people? Are they just cheap? Is this normal in some homes? why do you think they didnt install that electi water feeder?

  • Answer:it depends on the age of the house if it has a old cast iron radiator’s it is somewhat common if you also have a old analog t-stat change that first then see if there is some-kind of pump to fill it when it needs it also if you can wrap all the pips to keep them warmer longer and when you leave on vacation turn the temp down to 55deg and it will last longer but you might need to look in to seeing if there is a auto fill for your heater.

Associated Water Heater Furnace Question: Can i convert from a furnace water heater to a point of use water heater?
So i have a furnace water heater, but we don’t have enough hot water for showers and such. So i was thinking of adding a water heater such as a point of use water heater or something like that. Is it possible?

  • Answer:Yes its possible. You are looking at apprx. 1000.00 as an investment though. Depending the water heater brand and type of special vent required, an initial cost will be made. In the end the energy saved and your issue will resolve for you will have on demand hot water. Get several estimates on this for the price cost will vary. Be aware, your gas meter will need an upgrade for these do use more gas as btu loads are concerned.

Associated Water Heater Furnace Question: Can I inclose my furnace and water heater?
I have a small utility room that serves as a laundry room, which also houses the furnace and hot water heater. Can I inclose the furnace/water heater with a wall with strategic points of acess in order to make the room have a cleaner appearance?

  • Answer:If they are both electric appliances that do not need combustion air you can enclose them as much as you like. Please, please, please leave room for easy access to filter, elements, controls, drains, etc. If either or both is a gas appliance you MUST ALLOW COMBUSTION AIR TO ENTER FREELY. And the air source can not come from a bathroom or laundry room. The available cubic feet of air is too small. Check your local codes or your appliance manufacturers for the minimum cu. ft. as a source and the required unrestricted opening for incoming combustion air. Several dangerous scenarios exist if you choke off the room. Example: I am currently working on a project exactly as you describe. The water heater and furnace are gas in an enclosed room that requires a 2′ X 2′ louver covered opening directly from the family room in the basement even though the bathroom and laundry room are the closest and simplest areas. I hope your’s are electric. Good Luck!

Associated Water Heater Furnace Question: How can I hide the water heater and furnace from kids in my basement ?
I am planning on making my unfinished basement as a play area for my kids but I am scared of the water heater and furnace. How can I block it without building a room around it as I do not have the budget or time for that ?

  • Answer:Get a flexible bendable curtain track ( such as in the hospital) flame proof curtain Put red tape on the floor. Tell them they are not allowed in the red tape zone if they go in there they lose playroom privileges.

Associated Water Heater Furnace Question: What is the source of high pitched noise coming from water heater or furnace?
I just noticed a high pitched noise, very similar to some of the newer alarm systems, coming from the garage. The two things there are the water heater and the gas furnace. The gas had been switched off about a week ago so we could reinstall a gas insert into the fireplace and, initially, the furnace gas stayed off (which we discovered because of no heat!). I don’t know if this started right after – which is why I’m not assuming it’s the furnace. Thanks!

  • Answer:Wow, there is a million noises I have heard from both a water heater and a furnace. Sort of hard without you making the actual noise. If I had to guess, I usually hear higher pitched noises from a blower wheel in a furnace due to bearings. See if it does while the actual heat is on, or fan, ect. If not, Assuming the work you have done to gas logs, Gas pressure might be an issue. Sometimes, gas gets thrown off when anyone does work on a similar appliance. The gas that passes through the burner chambers on the furnace whistles and whirls, because it has a low burn off rate. (All that means is it cant burn the gas fast enough, or the gas pressure is too low, causing it to ‘dance around’.) The last thing I see often, is a piece of tape, duct work or something close to the actual furnace has come a little loose. It can be a litlle chore trying to hunt for it. Though you will know it as soon as you put your finger on it. I will garentee you, one of these three issues will be your problem. I hope it works out for you, good luck & merry christmas.

Associated Water Heater Furnace Question: turn off the water while leaving the hot water heater and furnace on?
I’ll be out of town for several months so I’m thinking of turning the main water valve in my house off. However because I don’t want the pipes to freeze in the winter can I leave hot water heater and the furnace on? Thank you.

  • Answer:you should maintenan a temp to keep pipes form frezzing. other wise you need to drain all water out of pipes and put antifreez in thats more importan if you live in the north like i do.. pipes freez here even with the heat at 80

Associated Water Heater Furnace Question: NFPA 54 re water heater and furnace in living area?
Does NFPA 54 mention any restrictions on where a natural gas water heater and furnace can be in a house?

  • Answer:Yes.

Associated Water Heater Furnace Question: i’m looking for ideas on how to conceal water heater and furnace.?
water heater and furnace sitting side by side in newly finished garage. i’m looking for ways to conceal them. maybe someone has done this or perhaps knows of a website that could give me an idea on where to begin. not too thrilled about building a wall around them either. anybody got any thoughts?

  • Answer:Build a linen cupboard around them, then you can use the space to keep your towels and sheets nice and warm with the leftover heat. Make sure you leave enough space to vent the furnace, if it’s specifications require it.

Associated Water Heater Furnace Question: Is it safe to have a wood-burning fire going when it shares chimney w/ hot water heater & furnace?
Sorry! It’s a gas hot water heater and a gas furnace

  • Answer:I don’t know where you live but that arrangement is against the Building Codes in Canada. It is very unsafe. Drafts from the fireplace can cause the fireplace and water heater pilot lights to fail and Gas can enter the dwelling and cause a fire or worse.

Outdoor Wood Burning Furnace

Question
I’ve checked the archives and found very little info…

I was interested in possibly installing an outdoor wood furnace, but the
few messages that I’ve seen report serious smoke problems and other
concerns.
I’ve read the same thing … about the smoke. I live where wood is
plentiful and there is a place along a well traveled road that has been
selling them for at leat five years. Turn-over seems minimal and there is
only one residence where I regularly see one in use. It’s in a valley and
it does produce a serous layer of smoke when the air is still.
Does anyone have any experience with outdoor wood furnaces? Anyone try
to store the heat generated in say a large insulated water tank?
Any suggestions/links/etc. would be appreciated.

We also sent off for literature from the major outdoor wood furnace
manufacturers, and surfed the net for reports.

After learning how the furnaces operate, we decided to go with a wood
pellet-burning indoor system (free standing pellet stove, and ceiling
fans to move heated air around the home).

I’ve had a lot of experience with wood burning heat systems, having
grown up with them since the 1950s. “Triple” heat return: once when you
cut it, again when you split and stack it, and at last, when you burn it.

The outdoor furnaces would work best in an extremely cold winter
climate, where the demand for heat would cause the furnace to hold its
air intake open for more or less continuous burn. Otherwise, the design
of the air intake system is to ’shut it down,’ leading to incomplete
combustion and excessive smoke production. I’m guessing this is why they
are made and sold in states like Minnesota and the Dakotas.

This was the major problem with so-called “air-tight” wood stoves that
became all the rage from the ’50s thru the ’70s … folks would cram
them full of wood to “stoke for overnight” and then close the air intake
almost shut. The stove would smolder through the night, creating massive
clouds of cool smoke that could completely clog a chimney with creosote
in a week .. I’ve seen it happen. Meanwhile, the neighbors downwind were
choking on a pall of bitter smoke coming from the choked-down stove. The
resulting chimney fire the next time the stove was allowed to blaze up
sometimes caused a tragic house fire.

So .. having some consideration for our nearby neighbors, and realizing
that “cold smoldering” is not an efficient way to use wood that takes a
lot of labor and expense to harvest, we decided not to inflict a pall of
bitter woodsmoke on them through the winter months from an inefficiently
burning outdoor furnace.

I don’t see a good answer to the problem, except for constantly tending
the furnace, feeding small quantities of wood at short intervals. Any
attempt to feed a “large charge” of wood will likely cause a bad smoke
situation, unless it’s 15 below zero outside, and the air intake is half
open …

Associated Outdoor Wood Burning Furnace Question: Does anyone have a fire chief outdoor wood burning furnace?
We are thinking of buying one and we would love some feed back. Good or bad.

  • Answer:I don’t have one, but my boyfriends’ parents do and they love theirs…it’s a really cool thing and saves a lot of money in the winter… the ONLY thing is that a lot of people ask what the heck it is, because it kinda looks like a weird-looking dog house…lol

Associated Outdoor Wood Burning Furnace Question: Does anyone have an outdoor type wood furnace?
I am considering an outdoor type wood burning furnace to heat my house. It is presently heated by oil hot air. If you have an outdoor furnace, has it met your expectations? What make do you have? How often must you add wood? How much wood do you burn/year? What is the size of your house?

  • Answer:Get yourself a heat pump about a 18 ceer. the wood stove you are talking about will burn a 1/2 truck load of wood a day,and you will need a place to put your ashes everyday the only way you will save money with this stove is if you don’t work and have a lot of time to cut wood and keep the fire going and you can’t go anywhere because your fire might go out and all your water lines may freeze. If you do need to go some place over night or for more than 1 day you will need to hire some one to come to your house and put wood in your stove and take out your ashes. That sounds like to much fun for me, knock yourself out Paul Bunion I admire your drive to save a little money.

Associated Outdoor Wood Burning Furnace Question: where to get reasonably priced insulated pipe for outdoor furnace?
We have an outdoor wood burning furnace. We need to replace the 6″ insulated pipe. Of course that stuff is not cheap. Where is the best place to buy it?

  • Answer:home depot

Associated Outdoor Wood Burning Furnace Question: does anybody know anything about outdoor wood burning furnaces?

  • Answer:All I know is that they must have a very high chimney to avoid the wood smoke from over-taking your building at window level. Sight location and wind direction along with distance from the building are all keys to being happy with this type of heating source. You also need to consider how often you need to replenish/refill for continuious operation-(long wood vs common sized wood) and auto dampening features. A well concieved plan along with sight preparation can make for limited attendence to such an appliance resulting in a joy to opperate while laughing at the utility co’s efforts to seperate you from your hard earned cash.

Associated Outdoor Wood Burning Furnace Question: Which type of wood heat is best for this situation? Wood stove or Wood furnace? Indoor or outdoor?
Just bought an old farmhouse with 2400 square feet built in 1920. It has a newer electric forced air system and is very expensive in winter to heat so we want to put some type of wood heat. Wood is plentiful and cheap here. There are two old chimneys that are presently covered up and would need work to use. One is in the kitchen and one in the living room. I was thinking about a dual purpose wood cook stove that would heat the house as well but now I am thinking maybe a wood furnace might be better or more efficient. What are the differences between the indoor and outdoor wood-burning furnaces & (from someone who has one) what do you like about having a wood burning furnace? Also, does a wood burning furnace use it’s own chimney or does it have to be hooked up to on that is already there. Of course I have calls in to a few companies -but everyone is out for the holidays and I won’t hear back until next week so I am asking for opinions here. Thanks! more details: I am home full time and do not mind tending to a woodstove. I kind of enjoy it. And the more I think about it I would have to admit that, just as important as saving money, is the fact that I love the way wood heat feels.

  • Answer:We have a wood furnace in our basement. It is connected to our heat pump duct work, so that it gives heat through out the house. There is a thermostat next to our heat pump thermostat that kicks a little fan on when the temperature drops, and this builds up the fire and heat. When the heat around the fire box gets a certain temp, a blower kicks on and blows the hot air through the duct work. Our home is a brick ranch, 2500 sq ft + full basement, built in 1983 Down side—- You have to fill the fire box late at night to keep fire in all night. If you have a large fire in the furnace and the temp gets up in the house you still are having heat come out because of the heat build up in the fire box. We have a humidifier installed in the duct work that this heat comes through but the heat is still a very dry heat. If you are away at work all day, sometimes you have to really work at getting a good fire built up for the night when embers are burnt down. We can’t tell a lot of difference in the electric bill because of the electric used with the blower and fan, but the heat is a warmer heat than the heat pump. I don’t think I would like an outside furnace just because I wouldn’t want to go out in the snow and cold every night to fix the fire for the night.

Associated Outdoor Wood Burning Furnace Question: installation instructions for a used wood burning furnace?
It is not an outdoor furnace and I don’t know the brand name

  • Answer:Make sure you have a chimney. I’m sure there are many types. It might help if you knew that.

Noise Furnace

Question
A home high-efficiency gas furnace exhausts through a basement window via a
piece of PVC pipe.  The exhaust creates loud tones at 517 and  to a
slightly lesser extent at 1034 hz that can be heard several blocks away.
My question:  Can a resonant tube be attached to the PVC pipe to absorb the
noise?  Or will it be necessary to run the exhaust through a muffler?
Thanks in advance–JM

Answers
I would talk to the furnace installation people first of all. Perhaps
adding a larger diameter pipe onto the end will slow down the velocity,
as well as flairing the output someway? Get rid of the noise. Don’t muffle
it!

Associated Noise Furnace Question: Furnace Noise following installation of new humidifier?
Hi, Several days ago, I have installed new central humidifier on a three year old Lennox furnace. Having turned it on last night, I am getting weir vibration noise, as well as intermittent soft grinding noise from what appears to be coil area. If I physically adjust and hold the humidifier supply duct that is connected to the coil unit by pulling it up, the noise stops. I would appreciate any suggestions.

  • Answer:Sounds like a poor installation. Something they installed to loose and vibrating. I assume they warranty their work. Give the contractor a call and have them fix it.

Associated Noise Furnace Question: I hear a humming noise from my furnace when I try to turn the fan on, what should I do?
I have Lennox furnace and whenever I turn on the fan without air conditioning, I hear a humming noise and the fan doesn’t spin. But whenever I turn on the air conditioning the fan is running fine. Also, when I turn off the air conditioning, the fan continues to run normally. So every time I want to turn on only my fan, I would have to turn on the A/C on and turn it off again. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Answer:HVAC Tech.: The hum you hear might be the purge blower running, this should happen first in the light up process. the sequence is staged so that the purge is first, the unit lights off, when it heats up enough the blower comes on and warm air comes out. When the heat setting is reached the fire goes out, then as the thing cools down then the blower turns off last. Hope that helps you!

Associated Noise Furnace Question: furnace noise after it shuts off?
I have an older, i don’t know how old bryant furnace. The furnace will run and after it shuts off there will be a loud, noticable thud, clang come from the furnace. Metallic in sound. The sound will occur about 20-30 seconds after the furnace has turned off. I had the furnace checked out and cleaned when I purchased the house in May. The repair person said that it was in decent shape for its age and the only thing there really is to be concerned about is its efficency level. I do believe it’s made this sound since I moved in. Any thoughts? also is this anything to be concerned with?

  • Answer:PROBABLY ONE OF THE PLENUM WALLS ‘OIL CANNING ‘ OR SUCKING IN AS THE SYSTEM COOLS DOWN.

Associated Noise Furnace Question: reducing furnace noise?
I’m trying to cut down on the sound coming off our home furnace. I already have the furnace room walls insulated with rockwool, which I find insufficient. Short of adding more wall sound insulation, is there anything that I can add directly on to the furnace unit itself to block the noise?

  • Answer:It depends on what about the furnace unit is making the noise. Typically it is the fan motor, or associated moving parts. Sometimes it is the housing vibrating from the spinning of the blower fan. It may be the plenum or metal (or other) box that the air blows through to get to the ductwork. Lets look at all reasons it can make noise and eliminate things First, the fan. If the furnace/ac kicks on and there is a rattling or grinding or whining or other noise that accelerates as the fan picksup speed, the bearings in the fan blades or motor are going bad. This is not good/expensive to fix maybe. IF the noise is worse when the fan is at full speed and stays constant while the unit is blowing air it could be that the belt is loose or if no belt the linkage from motor to blower fan is loose or worn out. This may be fixable with a little tinkering but not for someone not mechanically inclined. The mounting for the motor or fan blower may be loose, try to tighten the screws or bolts that hold them down. If the noise starts slowly after the fan is at full speed it could be that there is resistance in the plenum or ductwork/air ducts/vents. This usually isn’t that noisy, but it can be bad. You should go throughout the house in each room and make sure that the ducts are clear and vents are all open to the full. Usually there are fins that direct the flow to a certain direction these should be open wide, also behind them may be a flow restrictor fins. These are used typically with a lever that opens or close the flow off completely to ‘zone control’ the room. These should be open wide as can be too for the testing. Should be so the air ducts and vents in each room are open wide and blowing air full when the unit is operating. Be thorough as you search for vents in all rooms, you may miss a vent or two in odd rooms, behind furniture or in larger rooms. If any air vents are open wide and don’t blow air with good force(should be similar from vent to vent and from room to room, decreasing slightly the farther from the furnace unit you get) then the ducts(tubes) are blocked somehow. if they are in the attic, they may have been crushed by the cable guy or the christmas ornaments box you shoved up there. or maybe you have squirrels building nests within them or something ( similar in the basement depending where the ductwork runs.) If they are smashed, reshape as best you can and see if that gets the air going again. (careful not to tear them open or cause leaks in the duct itself) If too much air is restricted from coming through the ducts it can make the unit more noisy. If the ducts leak into the attic or basement you lose heat/cool into that space instead of the room and could cause water damage from condensation. Seal leaks with duct tape or replace the duct. Same goes for the return air intake(s) usually there is one at the furnace unit on the door to the unit or an adjacent wall. The filter usually goes there. the filter should be clean and fit properly for the opening so all air goes through it not around the edges. Other return air ducts can be placed throughout the house in larger homes so check that the same as the air ducts and clear any blockages. Sometime when the unit is installed, the unit is too powerful for the size of ductwork existing and this can backpressure the unit causing excessive noise and resultant loss of efficiency of the entire unit. It is working too hard to force air through it. This is hard to calculate, a bigger plenum and more ductwork is required. Other major noise may be the plenum, duct work, vents or surrounding wallboard or the floor where the unit sits may be loose and making vibration noise that can be dampened by securing it properly/better… if it is rattling or humming it may be the plenum or duct work. Tap on the plenum and ducts to see how loose they are and if so, try to screw, rivit or tape the parts that are noisey so they can’t flex so much. This may dampen the sound a bit. Make sure that the floor under the unit is solid and doesn’t have any weakness at all. Sometimes there is water damage from condensation or poorly braced for the weight of the unit or other reasons that weakens the joists or flooring and that can really make it noisy but not be obvious. unfortunately, this may be an expensive or extensive job to fix but maybe worth the trouble if the floor is damaged enough to break under the unit. This should eliminate most of the noise of the unit that can be fixed. Sometimes you just have a noisy unit. In that case, there are other things to do to help quiet the environment of your living space. If the furnace is in a wall that adjoins the bedroom or living areas, you might try to place larger pieces of furniture infront of the area where it is. Like putting your big dresser on that wall right where the furnace is located. Maybe hang a tapestry on that wall as well will help quiet it some. Move the bed or your sitting chair to the other side of the room from the furnace. Another more extensive fix can be to double up the drywall board around where the furnace is to quiet it down. this seems radical, but it will reduce a noisey unit significantly if done properly. (last resort stuff) In short, Eliminate any vibration noise, air flow restriction noise, or structural weakening, use sound barriers in the rooms or consider replacing the furnace altogether. An existing furnace that is over 5 years old (the pros say) is inefficient and can cost up to 50% more in energy cost than a new unit. A new unit can be much quieter, more efficient and sometimes you can move it to another area that is less annoying noise-wise. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Associated Noise Furnace Question: Help with ticking noise from furnace?
After my furnace cycles through and stops blowing warm air, i can hear a “ping” or “tick” noise about every 40 seconds. I have tried to isolate the sound but cannot. I did notice that if it cycles and then I turn off the thermostat that I do not hear the noise. Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • Answer:heat expands. something has come a little loose in the ductwork. you are listening to the expansion ; thus making this noise. go and give the system a good lookin over ,for something ;anything; thats loose. when it cools it can make noises too becuz it’s contracting(getting smaller)

Associated Noise Furnace Question: How come my furnace makes a loud humming noise and won’t light?
Our furnace is a trane unit and upon setting the thermostat to run it, it makes a loud humming noise but no fan or anything else and won’t light. It is an electronic ignition. read the last part again. Electronic ignition.

Associated Noise Furnace Question: Is is safe to run furnace when making a loud noise?
Our furnace is making a grinding noise. Some sites say it may be a blown fan bearing. We called our landlord earlier today but he hasn’t gotten back to us. Can we still use our furnace or should we shut it off?

  • Answer:If it’s the bearing it’s already shot ….and needs replacement. Run it periodically as needed ….if the noise becomes excessive ….shut it down

Associated Noise Furnace Question: Furnace makes a horrendous noise?
My furnace makes this rattling/screeching/vibrating noise. It is coming from the little gray box that has the reset button on top of it. I took the cover off, and there is this small rectangular piece that seems to be causing the noise or the noise is coming close from that point. I will call for service, but I really like to know ahead of time what the service guy might tell me or what it might cost. Thanks in advance for the great help out there!

  • Answer:it sounds like something is either about to break loose or has already broken loose.I was told a little vibrating is normal. call the repair man and do your best to tell him what the problem is . if you have the same luck as me when he gets there it will run smoothly no noise at all LOL.and the minuter he back’s out of your driveway it will start all over again. LOL

Horiba Furnace Problems

Question
I need some advice. My downstairs fireplace is practically unusable
due,
I believe, to downdrafts. I say “downdrafts, I believe”, because half
of
the time we use it, we get little or no smoke in the room at all. The
other times though it is so bad that we have to fling the windows and
door
open, use a fan, etc. to clear the smoke out. Tonight that was the
case. I
have wracked my brain  trying to figure out why this occurs. Tonight
there
was a persistant breeze blowing, probably 10-15 mph breeze that I guess
caused the problem.
I have installed a chimney cap, one of those wire boxes with a little
roof on the top, billed to “reduce” downdrafts, but to no apparent
avail.
I am very concerned about needing to rely on this fireplace this
winter
if a power outage occurs ( which generally does once or twice each
winter)
but I wouldn’t then have the option of opening up the house.
Any suggestions to try short of major surgery on the chimney?
Thanks,

It is possible that your house has a negative air pressure situation. This
is generally found in a house that is “tight”, ie. it has good windows and
caulking, etc. There is air being expelled from a house all the time
through bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, furnace chimney, water heater
chimney, clothes dryer. This air must be replaced by outside air. The air
will find it’s way in through the easiest path, which in the case of a
tight house may be the fireplace chimney.

A possible solution is an air makeup unit. These can be professionally
installed or there is at least one unit that is a do-it-yourself deal. I
think it is called “Equalize Air”. It is an air intake that connects the
outside of your house to the return air duct in the furnace system. At
first glance, it may seem that this would have a horrible effect on your
heat bills, but this is not the case. That cold air is going to come in
anyway, the question is where. It will come in through windows, around wall
sockets, etc., or it will come in through the air makeup unit.

To test whether you have negative pressure in your house, wait until the
next time your fireplace is downdrafting (smoke is entering the room).
Clear out the smoke, then open a window another part of the house to act as
an air intake. This could be a basement window or a bedroom window. If the
fireplace starts behaving, it is a pretty good sign that you would be
helped by an air makeup unit.
Hope this helps,

Furnace Trouble

Question
his morning I lowered myself into the bathtub and relaxed. Meanwhile,
Emily our grey mischief-maker jumped down from the sink cabinet and
stretched out on the bathmat on the floor. She looked at me, struck a
cute pose, and meowed loudly. This called for a reply. I told her she
was a glorious cat, a beautiful cat, a world-class cat. Satisfied, she
meowed agreement and closed her eyes. A minute later while lying in the
tub I heard a strange, irregular rumble, rising and falling. We have a
noisy furnace (actually it’s a boiler – we have hot water radiators),
and I worried that it was giving trouble. Then I located the rumble’s
source. It was Emily’s purrs at all my flattery, amplified by the
hard-surfaced bathroom walls! Repair money saved, a contented cat – the
morning had started well.

Associated Furnace Trouble Question:how does a furnace gas valve work elactrical and trouble shooting it th tr where does – &+ for 24v?
my furnace has 4 burners two burners turn on but very lazy flame the other two do not and the furnace turns off i just need to know how to trouble shoot it check for pressure or tell me what the symbols mean it has TH TR and TH/TR terminal with screws i found a web site on the valves and seen how they work and i have a bad solenoid need to buy valve not opening all the way ignorance and not knowing is your worst enemy.

  • Answer:You may need to have the burners cleaned. There’s nothing wrong with the gas valve if you’re getting any kind of flame. the cleaning should be done by someone who knows what they’re doing, a.k.a. a professional.

Associated Furnace Trouble Question:Rheem Furnace trouble?
I have a Rheem 90 PLUS – High Efficiency Furnace ( 9 Years old) it stopped working, no flame, the blower works if I press on the switch and then it stops after a few minutes when the furnace does not light up…??? any idea what is happening, any repair advice…I would appreciate it… Hey guys thanks for the advice, but I have tried all of these so far, I pushed the switch, only the blower runs and the furnace does not light up…

  • Answer:I stopped myself from giving the advice you need because if you are asking this question you do not know enough to follow it safely. Your fuel supply could be turned off, or your ignition unit is not working. Look for a fuel shut off valve closed. But you may already have smelled fuel being injected? If you are smelling fuel it is not turned off. It takes time to get old fuel to dissipate so stop trying for a while to avoid an explosion. You could have water coming in your fuel if this is an oil furnace. Check the fuel filter. But after 9 years the ignition system should have been serviced, and will likely need it now. You need to know what you are doing for this.

Associated Furnace Trouble Question:Gas forced air furnace trouble?
The furnace will run for a short time then stop, the thermostat is set to 69 degrees and the house temp is 65, furnace still does not run. Wondering if this is a thermostat or furnace problem? The furnace will run every once in a while, but does not keep the house at the desired temp, is there anything I can do to fix this?

  • Answer:Check the operating range of the thermostat – that is, figure out at what temp it comes on and what temp it goes off. If there is more than a 4 degree spread between on and off, then check the following: Is the thermostat level? Take the cover off and look for the level lines. Align a small level with the level lines, and if it isn’t level, adjust it so that it is. Check the heat anticipator setting. You’ll need to go to the furnace and locate the “data plate” on the primary control. That will be the control where the thermostat wires connect. It should tell you what the amperage of the control is – it will be a decimal followed by a number – such as .15, or something similar. Go back to the thermostat – inside there is a little metal lever with a pointer and a numerical scale. Move the lever until the pointer aligns with the number you got from the control. If none of that works, or you can’t figure it out, you’ll need to call a technician.

Associated Furnace Trouble Question:Trouble lighting the pilot light on furnace?
I have a old carrier furnace in my apartment and the thing is constantly going out.Im getting tired of calling the maintenance people everytime this happens.I have been successful lighting it in the past but only one time.Im using a long tipped lighter and holding the pilot button like crazy but I cant get a flame going. The gas is on and it has power because the fan works. Is there any reason why this could be happening. The thing is pretty old.

  • Answer:Hi, Being it’s old the 1st thing i would suggest is replacing the thermo-coupler, that is the most common pilot light problems.

Associated Furnace Trouble Question:Furnace Trouble Part Deux PLEASE?
First of all, the filter has been changed. There are fresh batteries in the programmable thermostat. My furnace does put out the correct amount of heat. The problem I am having is that the flame goes out before it is supposed to, and a click will sound (Igniting the flame again). Sometimes it will do this many times per hour. Sometimes you will get 5-10 clicks in succession with the flame coming on and off. The only thing I have done within the year is change to an electronic thermostat which is programmable. Should I change this? Can a faulty connection cause this? I did go into the thermostat and tighten everything and making sure there was contact. How about the thermocouple? Can the thermocouple cause this symptom? It is more of a nuissance. I still get heat, but I know there is some sort of problem. The fan is working fine. The fan continues to circulate the air as the ignition and flame go out. It appears to be completely independant of the fan. It is a Janitrol GDPS100-3 from 1

  • Answer:You need to clean the flame sensor. It is on the opposite side of the burner rack from the ignitor.Shut off power remove sensor,(a metal rod 1/2 cased in ceramic)clean off carbon with steel wool or sandcloth, reinstall and turn on furnace. If this doesn

Associated Furnace Trouble Question:Trouble bleeding an Oil Furnace due to a rounded nut?
My furnace ran out of oil and I just refilled it today. Normally I bleed the oil from the bleeder valve and then restart it. Today, however, the nut that tightens the bleeder valve is rounded and my wrench wont catch. The next smallest wrench size is too small and I’m stuck with a rounded nut on an oil furnace. If you have any ideas or suggestions on how to remove said nut it would be much appreciated. Thanks

Associated Furnace Trouble Question:Apartment building with furnace trouble?
I live with my friend in a 3 unit apartment building. We live on the third floor, and my friend owns the building. We have one tenant, and the third apartment is empty. Over the last few days, we’ve been having trouble with the furnace. It turned off, and we didn’t know until the apartment was 62 degrees. So, we relit the pilot, and thought everything was ok, until 24 hours later when it happened again. And then 12 hours after that it happened a third time. Now, its been working great for the last 36 hours, and I came home from being out all day, and its off again. We just had the furnace repaired about 2 months ago, the pilot light area was all rusted from moisture, and a new one was installed. Now, the pilot light keeps going out. It relights and stay lit for 12 to 36 hours, but then goes out again. We know we need to call someone to repair this, I’m just wondering if anyone knows what the problem may be, and how much we’re going to pay to have it fixed? And, since its Sunday night and no one is going to be able to come out and fix it now, how long can we go with relighting it every day? How safe is it? I mention our tenant due to asking how long can this go without calling someone. We NEED to have heat for the tenant, we live in Pennsylvania, the last few nights have been around 20 degrees outside. But if we can get away with safely reigniting it ourselves for a few weeks, we’ll do that cuz we really don’t have the money to have some repairman come and charge us over $300 for something we could have done ourselves.

  • Answer:The previous answers are correct in that it is not a safety issue because once the pilot light goes out, the thermocouple no longer senses the pilot flame and shuts the gas off. What is incorrect is how this is accomplished. It is not the heat of the pilot on the thermocouple that keeps the pilot lit, but a small electrical voltage generated by the pilot flame hitting the thermocouple. This voltage is sent to the gas valve through the thermocouple and is used to hold the pilot valve open. There are several reasons that will cause the pilot to go out. They are: Weak thermocouple not sending strong enough voltage to the gas valve to hold the pilot open. If this is the case, then the thermocouple simply needs to be replaced. If you are ambitious enough to try it yourself you can pick one up at a hardware store for about $10. About $100-$150 to have a hvac co. do the repair. A second possibility is that the thermocouple is not properly aligned in the pilot flame, causing a weak signal. This is a definite possibility since you recently had work done to the pilot assembly. The third possibility is a defective gas valve, in that the valve is receiving a strong enough signal, but the internal valve that supplies gas to the pilot is bad. A gas valve should cost about $300-$350 installed. A fourth, but unlikely, possibility since this is only a recent problem is drafts in the room blowing the pilot out. If this is the problem a automatic pilot re-lighting system can be installed for about $250. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Associated Furnace India Question:What is the proper CPH setting for a hot water furnace, no pump?
I have installed a Honeywell RTH230B 5-2 Day Programmable Thermostat, which allows a cycles per hour (CPH) setting to be programmed in. The furnace is hot water with a gas burner, no pump, no zones, and cast iron radiators (i.e., very old). Honeywell tech support from India had no clue–only read from the manual, which lists “hot water” and “gravity” separately, with 3 and 2 CPH respectively. This system would likely be called “hot water-gravity” right? Thanks. Just to clarify, it is definitely a hot water system, with two pipes per radiator, and an expansion tank on the basement ceiling above the furnace.

  • Answer:Are you sure you’re not making steam? It’s either a ’single pipe steam’ system, or a ‘gravity hot water’ system if it’s truely hot water with circulation by convection. Those old cast iron radiators hold heat pretty well. I’d try 2 CPH at first.

Associated Furnace India Question:What are we going to do, to save this planet?
READ THIS!! Four of the world’s most polluted spots are in the former Soviet Union. WASHINGTON, October 24, 2006 (RFE/RL) — Three cities in Russia, one in Kyrgyzstan, and Chornobyl in Ukraine are listed among the 10 most polluted places in the world in a report released last week by the New York-based Blacksmith Institute last week. Richard Fuller, director of the Blacksmith Institute, says that Norilsk, a large city in northern Siberia, has “almost no pollution controls” and that “even 10 or 15 miles away from the city” the landscape has been turned into “an absolute barren moonscape, with no trees.” “There are places — open water areas and open lagoons — that you cannot go close to without your eyes burning.” The trees have been cut down to feed the furnaces of the city’s nickel production facilities, the largest in the world. At times, the snow in Norilsk is black, and the air tastes of sulfur. But the damage is not just to the environment: The life expectancy rate among workers in the nickel factories is the lowest in Russia. According to Fuller, official reports say it is 42 years of age for men but others say 37 years old is a more accurate figure. Dzerzhinsk, in the Volga region of Russia, is just as polluted. However, the culprits here are not metal producers but old chemical-weapons plants. “This is a place where anecdotally doctors talk about birth defect rates in excess of 70 percent,” says Fuller. “There are places — open water areas and open lagoons — that you cannot go close to without your eyes burning.” The health problems in the Kyrgyz town of Mailuu-Suu are also profound. The town is built around the waste from a former Soviet uranium plant, a fact reflected in cancer rates that, according to Fuller, are twice the national average. With a population of some 23,000 people, Mailuu-Suu is far smaller than either Norilsk or Dzerzhinsk. However, the uranium waste that is blighting the health of its population is also a danger to a far larger number of people. Mailuu-Suu lies in an earthquake zone, Fuller says, and there is a danger that the uranium waste will run the river “and, from there, downstream into a highly populated valley in Kyrgyzstan that is home to around 2.5 million people.” Other places included in the list are in China, India, Peru, Zambia, and the Dominican Republic. In all 10 locations, pollution levels exceed all local and international standards for toxic substances. The list is not exhaustive, and Blacksmith Institute researchers say that they are many other cities in the world that could have easily made the list, particularly in Russia, China, and India.

  • Answer:Your question is really easy to answer. We’ll do the same thing we have always done. Wait until it’s to late then panic. We humans are hell bent on self destructing. Long term planning is next week.

Furnace Filter Replacement

Question
The previous owner of my house “kluged” together a furnace filter that just
isn’t right. I have searched and search for the proper replacement size filter,
but cannot seem to locate a good fit.
Answers
“Good fit” doesn’t really apply to furnace filters. Different brands
vary in dimension by a half-inch or more for a given “standard” size.
All you really want is a filter that will fit and won’t fall out of the
holder slot, and without any major gaps (more than 1/2 inch or so)
around the ends. Strips of foam rubber can be used to make a loose
holder tighter. If the metal frame is just too big to hold the filter
in place, you can make a new frame of aluminum angle and fit it inside
the existing frame.
Associated Furnace Filter Replacement Question:does anyone know how to change a replacement filter for a quatro brand furnace?
I am not sure of the model number but the numbers on the furnace are 409290C and there is a second number of HWSV9500. It is an old furnace and I heard a rumor they don’t make this model anymore.

  • Answer:With out being there this is a difficult question to answer. Some times the filter is located in the same compartment as the fan is, usually right where the duct work attaches to the furnace. Other times the filters are in the duct work before they attach to the furnace. There is also the possibility that you have filter grills. These are grill assemblies that contain the filters in the living quarters where the return air ducts start. Usually in the hall ways and living rooms, good luck. You could always call an HVAC company to come over and locate it for you, and if none is in there (sometimes when the installation of a filter is difficult people will take the filter out and not put one back in, not a good idea) install one for you

Associated Furnace Filter Replacement Question:How do you determine when a furnace filter needs to be replaced?
I am investigating using the pleated filters in my furnace. The problem with any filter is knowing when to replace them. Most tell you how long they should be in the furnace before replacement. It seems to me a better method would be to measure the low pressure on the blower side of the filter. As the filter becomes plugged the pressure would go down while running. Does anyone know of a device to do this or does anyone know how I can determine what the maximum pressure drop should be across a filter when it needs to be replaced?

  • Answer:Filters are to be replaced at the least every other month. It really depends on the area you live in. The type of filter you use makes a difference also. If air cant travel through it due to the millions of dust bunnies and particles that have been trapped…then its time to change it. Be careful with the pleated filters. They come in different densities so be careful not to get one of those 1200 ’s which is very dense. True the higher the number the more particles it will catch. but at what price ? Try this : while the furnace is operating take note of the sound of the air movement. if when you remove the filter (if possible without having to leave the cover off) there’s a significant release of air pressure, then the filter is too dense. This will reduce the efficiency of your furnace, and also reduce the life of the motor. This is because the dense filter is causing the motor to overwork. This is to the equivalent of having a dirty filter, where the air is restricted. Its a little technical and cost a bit , but there are meters that measure air flow or CFM’s. Fluke puts out one. I think they are about $ 300.00 Also be careful of those cheap blue filters that allow too much to travel through. this will fill your ducts with dust and dirt. If you have central air the dust and dirt will get caught in the coils and soon not perform at its best , because the coils have become your filter and trap the dirt that the filter misses. Or cause you to have to have duct cleaning. So I suggest not going to the extreme either way. If you use pleated, try one thats rated at 600. If a different rating is used with pleated u can go the lowest number . It should suffice.

Associated Furnace Filter Replacement Question:Can I replace my Aprilaire furnace filter with a regular filter?
The replacement media for my Aprilaire furnace filter cost almost $60 the last time I replaced it and I want to try using a regular filter from a hardware store. There is a plastic case which holds the pleated media and the pleats are separated by plastic combs. I was thinking that I could remove the media and combs and place a regular filter inside the plastic case. Would this hold? Has anyone tried this?

  • Answer:Yes it could be done but you may have to make something to adapt a close fitting filter into it. I have made filter adapters for these units that now use a different filter cartridge of the same performance that are much cheaper ($28). My customers pay a $65 trip and installation charge along with $30.00 for the sheetmetal adapter and $28 for each filter. Or if your handy you could do it yourself.

I have a Air Bear Whole House Furnace filter, I bought a Air Demon barnd replacement. Since I changed it the furnace cycles and wont keep up very good. Demon says theirs has better flow, I disagree I need expert help on this one Please.

  • Answer:The only way to know exactly what the effects are is to have a tech. come out and test with an anemometer. There is a quick and dirty test you can do by holding the blower cabinet door open the width of your hand from finger tip to the heel of your palm. Let the door fall free; if it falls open on it’s own it’s fine. If it slams shut, you have restricted air flow. By the same token, if the filter is located down stream from the cabinet, the door will be pushed forcefully out of your hand as you open it while running.

Associated Furnace Accessories Question:where to i get info of electrical/mechanical engineering components, accessories, sensors, and functions?
hi, I’m not an engineer. i work in a factory which involves hydraulics, pneumatics, conveyors, manual packaging, cooling systems, furnaces. i would like to automate what i can in the factory to lessen the work load of our workers. i would like to know what i can use for automation of machines for improvements, like limit switches, sensors, delay switches, etc. and there functions. it would help me have an idea for designing, and to know whats possible. thank you.

  • Answer:Go find an engineer specializing in Process Control. There are two pitfalls in automation in particular that need to be addressed. One is the safety of the personnel and the other is the safe operation of the machinery. The first necessity is obvious, but the second involves making sure that there are no automatic situations in which the equipment can damage itselt. As an example of this, imagine having a thermostatically controlled heater on a container of liquid. Imagine that the container is accidentally empty. Will the heater be sufficiently smart that it does not overheat the container, being unable to sense the temperature inside it? Could happen if it weren’t designed right. I guess I’m trying to suggest that there is much more than just picking stuff out of catalogs.

Flow Furnace

Question

I put in a 150k btu comfortmaker furnace last year for a friend.  Now the

furnace is shutting down on startup.  The Furnace uses a White Rodgers  model #

50A50-112 control module which provides an LED that “blinks” trouble codes.

The problem is it “blinks” six times and there are only trouble codes for

“blinks” of 1 to 5.  The module uses a “flame sensor that appears to be just a

piece of wire in the flame ( I assume it uses a plasma effect to detect the

flame).  Has anybody else had a similar problem?  Please E-mail at

if you have any ideas.

Answers

I saw this once before where there was no code for a 6 flash, it may be

something to do with neutral and hot mixed up where power comes into

control compartment or mixed up in conduit. Check and make sure neutral

is actually eventually connected to the neutral bar at your load center.

You may want to make sure that the furnace is grounded well.

I do know I had to call comfortmaker to help figure out what was

happening.

Associated Flow Furnace Question:

Carrier 3 stage furnace flow to all rooms evenly?

In my old house, one room got freezing cold when I switched to a 2 stage furnace. The duct was on an outer wall and furthest from the furnace. The old system heated the same room better. I dampened other ducts to give that room more air flow.

  • Well, first stage supply temps on the 2 stage furnaces are lower than first stage of the standard forced air system. The btu output is about 30 percent lower or so on the 2 stagers supply, I’m guessing, 110 degree air instead of the standard’s 140 degree air. So, your colder room is getting lower temperature supplied to it. These kinds of furnaces perform the best in new construction or in condos where the insulation is even. I see them in those homes in gated communities and they are fine. But, the traditional furnaces that blast out the heat, i think, are still the best for the older homes. So what can you do about it ? You can’t go back, so you could insulate that run of duct to that cold room or the walls in it. That’s the only thing I can think of to make it warmer.

Associated Flow Furnace Question:Have little air flow coming from furnace through upstairs registers. Can I replace blower with larger blower?Have little air flow coming from furnace through upstairs registers. Can I replace existing blower with larger blower? The furnace is 20 yrs old, had this problem ever since I moved into the home last year.

  • Answer:furnace may be too small, and old furnace fans only run 1725 rpm, newer ones run faster at 20 yrs its time for a new one, you can install duct booster fans [fits in the duct]

Associated Flow Furnace Question:

i am trying to convert up flow furnace in to down flow is that poss? can just turn the blower around ?

ca i turn the blower around and install it that way?…is there a kit that could help me do that?….thank you.

  • Answer:blower has to be before heat exchanger so you don’t cook motor. I haven’t ever tried but if there is not enough room for duct out top 2 floor and out bottom to return duct, then i suppose you can have a blower compartment made to set down draft blower on top then set evap. coil (if applicable) in old blower section. most heaters are multi position and you can set it up horizontally. good luck.

Associated Flow Furnace Question:

Down flow gas furnace is acting up. All burners not fully lighting regularly?

The hot surface igniter glows red, gas valve opens and ignites gas in one of three chambers. After about 10 seconds, sometimes the “flame” travels to the other two chambers like it is supposed to. Sometimes the flame does not travel to the other two chambers and the furnace recycles and tries again. The flame sensor is in the chamber farthest from the chamber with the hot surface igniter that lights up first. The furnace is in a new home that is about 3 years old. I have also noticed that I have 3 cylindrical sensors in the burner area that appear to have reset buttons on the tops of them. I am guessing these are the flame “rollout” sensors. Does this sound like dirty burners or “crossovers”? Record cold temps are on their way and would really like to get the furnace operating correclty. Please help.

  • Answer:sounds like dirty. if burners have air adjustments too much air mixing with gas. switches are safety for over heat and roll out. try shifting burners around and see if jump slot on burners are open

Associated Flow Furnace Question:

why is my furnace over flow tube filling up with water now when the heat is on?

It used to only fill up in the summer with the air conditioner running.

  • Answer:Is this a newer furnace? If so , is it a high efficient furnace? If it is it will have plastic venting and the water is due to the condensate produced from the low temperature flue gases. When gas burns one of the by products is water, ussually this makes it up and out the chimney when the flue gas is hot. On high efficient furnaces they absorb so much of the heat the flue gas temperature is much lower, and starts to drop the moisture out of the flue gas. Your venting is designed to slope back to the furnace and drain the water back to the drain. If the “flow tube” is overflowing then there is probably a problem with the drain line being plugged. At that point the heat exchanger can fill with water and the preasure switch for the venting will not work and the furnace will not run anymore. Water comming out is normal, water backing up into the furnace is not.

How can I increase the air flow from my furnace?

I have a dayton blower motor 6K778. It is 1/3 hsp and provides1725 rpm.

  • Answer:You could get a Miltie speed replacement from A.O.Smith.

Associated Flow Furnace Question:

Can blockage of fan air flow from furnace cause carbon monoxide buildup? The A/C coil was plugged with debris.

The furnace tech got readings over 500 ppm of CO at the vent. He told us it was our heat exchanger that was leaking. As we were installing the new furnace, he discovered th A/C coil in the plenum was blocked with burned foil and insulation from the enclosure around the heat exchanger. The Heat exchanger seems okay, but has a scorch mark on it, as does the outside casing of the furnace (The furnace was suspended below and tight to a wood floor where this scorching occured). Was the furnace inspected properly, or was it a hasty call? They shut off our gas supply and told us we had to get a new furnace. Thanks.

  • Answer:a stopped up evaporator coil will not affect the leaking of CO. on almost all furnaces/air handlers the fan draws air through the evaporator coil (A coil) and then blows it through the furnace heat exchanger. this is done for a reason. the induced draft blower creates a partial vacuum inside of the heat exchanger, by sucking the combustion air and gasses through it. if the return air supply was totally blocked (in your case it was only partially blocked) the inside of the heat exchanger would still have a lower pressure on it. when a heat exchanger fails enough to leak, it usually has a crack that most folks cant find. the reason it leaks is when the exchanger gets hot the crack opens up and creates a scoop that builds negative pressure on the down wind side of the crack. this scoop sucks out the combustion gasses into the surrounding air. if you have a saws all cut it apart and you will find a small crack that probably wont even be open when the unit is cool, but will gape when it was hot. the bottom line is, if you were getting 500 ppm CO out of a floor vent, you have a crack some where, and a bad one at that. Possum, HVAC guy ps… most 90+ efficiency furnaces can be installed zero clearance (touching) on all sides…so nothing to worry about there

Associated Flow Furnace Question:

When I replace my filter for the furnace, should the “air flow” arrows point towards the furnace itself or

towards the ductwork on the other side. Or to make it simpler, to the left or to the right. Thanks.

  • Answer:you need to identify which ducts feed outward and which feed back into furnace. 1. find big vent in your house which is the feed going back into furnace 2. open the furnace door 3. locate duct feeding into furnace 4. and arrow of filter should be pointing opposite direction of feed vent

Associated Flow Furnace Question:

what is the difference between a down-flow furnace and a up-flow furnace?

  • Answer:downflows are usually put in attic and upflows are usually in the basement.

Associated Flow Furnace Question:

Fix Furnace

Question
I’m in the process of purchasing a home. During the whole-house
inspection, the inspector could not get the oil hot-water furnace to fire
up. I got a local oil company to inspect the furnace and was told several
things:
Burner needs cleaned and serviced.
Several parts to the boiler/water system need to be replaced.

The problem is, the seller has stated that he *will not* make any repairs
to the furnace, which according to the oil company would range between
$300-$500. I’ve already gone through the mortgage application and paid
them all their fees, so I’m kind of stuck here.

Are there any other options available to me other than ‘fix the furnace
yourself after closing’? I’d like to add that this will be my first home,
and the house I am trying to purchase is currently vacant (seller owns
another home elsewhere) and it has been on the market for a year. Also,
the seller noted in the disclosure that the heating system was in ‘good
operating condition’. Sure, it’ll run, but IMHO throwing soot all over
the utility room floor is not ‘good operating condition’.
Answers
Perhaps the sellers are short on cash and do not have it to pay for
fixing the furnace. I’d suggest offering them the option of deducting
$300-500 (you pick the number) from the price of the house as a credit
of sorts to you. Of course you would have to have the cash to fix it
then, which is usually tough when moving into a new house.

When we bought our current house less than two years ago, we found a
couple minor problems at the walkthru the night before closing. We got
$150 knocked off to fix these problems, at closing.

Associated Fix Furnace Question:How can I make my landlord fix my furnace?
It has been broken for weeks along with many other things. He picked up his rent $ yesterday and fixed everything but the furnace. I have told him for weeks about this, and now it’s bitter cold and I can’t live with it. Yesterday he said someone was coming to fix it (never happened), then 5-6 hours ago he said that he was getting ready to call the repair guy (hasn’t shown up and I haven’t received a call). If the repairman doens’t show up today, what should I do? A blizzard may be coming through by the end of the night.

  • Tell him that you are going to call the local building inspector if it isn’t fixed by the end of the day today! He has had plenty of time to deal with it.

Associated Fix Furnace Question:Does my landlord have to fix the furnace?
Our furnace hasn’t been working properly for three weeks now and living in Saskatchewan in winter makes that a very bad thing. It’ll come on maybe once or twice a day, but the house is never above 17 degrees. Is there something my roommates and I can do (ie withhold rent) until it does get fixed? He knows about the problem, just refuses to do anything about it.

  • you all don’t have to pay the rent if the landlord doesn’t want to fix anything in his property. I would withhold the rent to see if he fixs the furnance and if he tries to put u all out, go to higher authority and that will solve the problem.

Associated Fix Furnace Question:My furnace has been broke for about 5 months Ive told the landlord and he has not tried to fix it. what now?
The landlord has made no attempt in trying to fix the furnace and its about to be winter. What should I do?

  • call your city inspector. They will visit your place and when they see its broken they will send him notice. He will then have only a few days to comply with this or else they will take him to court. In most states you cannot withhold your rent. Then you are in violation of your lease. Also, if the landlord is not the owner contact the owner of the property, if he is the owner call your city inspector.

Associated Fix Furnace Question:Landlord refuses to fix furnace and hot water?
Hello, We are currently living in Toronto without heat and without hot water as my landlord is refusing to fix them and is now avoiding our phonecalls. I have no idea who to contact next about getting this fixed. I would assume that this is some kind of legal breech of contract but this is the first place I have lived in on my own and I don’t know what to do.

  • heres your rights: as it says on the web page “The only rights you have are the ones you stand up for!” http://www.ontariotenants.ca/ Q8: The landlord is refusing to make needed repairs in my apartment. How can I make the landlord carry out their maintenance obligations? A8: If the landlord does not make repairs on your verbal request, or has a history of not making repairs, put your request in writing, including the date of the letter, and keep a copy. If the landlord still hasn’t done the repairs in a reasonable time, then call your city Building Inspector to make an appointment for them to come out and look at the problem. If the inspector won’t come then ask to speak to their supervisor. Get a copy of the inspectors report to save for your records. If you are still having problems getting repairs done, you will want to contact the Investigation and Enforcement Unit, at 416-585-7214, or outside of the 416 calling area, toll free at 1-888-772-9277. If problems persists, then you may want to contact your lawyer or Community Legal Clinic, City Councillor, and maybe even apply for a rent reduction on the basis of lack of repair being a reduction of services in your apartment.

Associated Fix Furnace Question:How do I fix my Furnace unit that the blowers work, the pilot works but the gas doesn’t stay lit?
my thermostat tells the furnace to turn on everytime. the furnace turns on and the pilot light clicks. the gas turns on and is lit by the piliot. the gas stays lit for about 4 sec’s and then turns off. about 2 secs later the blowers turn on and blow no heat around my house. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

  • It’s probably a dirty flame sensor – the furnace won’t run if the sensor doesn’t see the burners are on. You can either clean it or replace it – sometimes they get corroded.

Associated Fix Furnace Question:How do I fix my furnace problem?
The dust/dirt in the ducting above my furnace was smoldering and filled the house up with smoke. The fire department came out and cut the section out that was burning. I don’t know if somethings wrong with the furnace, or that I just need my air ducts clean???

  • It is more than dirt in the ducts. You are overheating. The causes are many and varied and the risks of another fire is substantial. Since you have already had one fire, your home owner insurance may claim a second fire from the furnace is due to your failure to fix a confirmed problem and even if you appeal and win it will be a long battle over several years. Get a qualified furnanace repair company to investigate and repair or replace as is prudent.

Associated Fix Furnace Question:help me find a cheap priced person to fix my oil furnace in klamath falls or.?
i put some heating oil in my rental prop oil furnace and can’t get it to light. i have bled the line to the tune of 1 gallon oil removed and pushed the start button many times. i even let it sit for a day and tried again. no luck. i am now looking for someone to teach me to light it without these problems, but i don’t have the money for an experienced professional. does anyone know of anyone in kf who is retired or just handy?

  • Just remember you usually get what you pay for so cheap often equals poorly done. Your best bet would be to find a tech who works for a larger company who does side work. I am in California so I could not recomend anyone in your area.

Associated Fix Furnace Question:How do I fix my furnace?
I TRIED TURNING ON MY CENTRAL AIR BUT ALL I HEAR IS WATER RUNNING IN MY FURNACE BUT THE AIR WON’T TURN ON!!!! DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGGESTIONS ON WHAT CAN BE WRONG AND HOW I CAN GET MY AIR WORKING AGAIN. I CHANGED THE THERMOSTAT BUT THAT WAS NOT IT!!

  • When you turned it on did the outside unit (condenser) turn on? Did the blower on the furnace turn on? It could be that you were hearing the refrigerant flowing through the evaporator coil in the furnace. It can sound like water. If that is the case the problem is probably with the furnace blower or the relay.

Associated Fix Furnace Question:I have York International 90 gas heating furnace and keeps shutting off, how can i fix this?
It’s a York International 90 gas furnace and it was installed in 2004, and for the last two days it starts up and runs for 2-3 min and shuts itself off again! I have tried to clean furnace sensor and checked the thermostat but nothing seems to fix this!

  • There are quite a fiew sensors that can be checked. It sounds like you have a sensor going off that has a automatic reset on it causing it to short cycle. It could be something as simple as a plugged filter or a flame sensor.

Associated Fix Furnace Question:Rheem Criterion II Gas Furnace Leaking water. What would be the cause? How to fix and cost to fix?
I have an 8 year old gas furnace. I have noticed water (very little) on the right side of the furnace. There is a humidifier attached but the hose seems to be fine. It was replaced about 2 years ago. I believe that the water is only an issue when the furnace turns on. I cant seem to find the source. What would be the cause? How much to fix? Need to fix before it becomes a larger problem.

  • I’m not familiar with this brand or model furnace, so I don’t know if it is a 90% efficient furnace (they vent through the sidewall with plastic pipe instead of using the chimney). If it is then the problem could be a condensation leak. 90% furnaces need to drain because they form condensation, so it could be a loose drain hose, or worse yet, a problem with the heat exchanger. Also it could be the humidifier. Is it a drum type or flow-thru type? If it is a flow-thru type, it could be your humidifier pad is old and water is leaking off the pad and through the inside of the furnace to the floor. Turn off the water to the humidifier and see if the leak stops. If it doesn’t then the problem lies elsewhere. I’m a heating contractor
