Industrial Furnace

Question
I have seen several domumentaries were there are mentions of small
industrial furnaces being deployed to the Pacific and new part
milling, the robust repair and recylcing of Hurricanes, and in one
documentary on the B-26 of whole plane final assemeble do right on
base from parts from a vareity of sources.

Answers
You have asked several questions, to answer them individually

1) Were small industrial furnaces deployed to the Pacific ?

That depends on what you define as a small industrial furnace.
Blacksmiths forges certainly were, aluminium smelters
certainly were not.

2) Were new parts sometimes milled in the field ?

Sure but only at great need, normally you pick the
spares up from the stores maintained on base and
which are purchased from the aircraft manufacturer

3) Were Hurricanes repaired and even recycled ?

Certainly, an entire organisation was created for just
this purpose with minor battle damage being handled
by the squadrons themselves, more substantial repairs
being handled by specialist units which were part of the
Civilian Repair Organisation and were located away from
the airfields.

Associated Industrial Furnace Question:How much would a glass toughening furnace cost?
I am doing research for a big assignment, and I need quotes for large, industrial/commercial glass toughening furnaces. Any ballpark figures are good – exact figures (with sources) are great. Please tell me where I can find the information (such as web pages, etc) so that it is usable in my assignment. Thank you. Thanks Mike, your links were somewhat helpful, and your figures were a good starting point for me. Any other more specific quotes are welcome!

  • Answer:Tempering of glass is done by heating the shaped glass to about 1000F in a lehr or annealing oven and then running sheet on an open conveyor past very strong blasts of refrigerated air to cool the whole thing very quickly. So the whole setup consists of high temp heating and handling equipment, high volume air chilling equipment and a careful setup of air blast nozzles uniformly placed across a moving belt all sized to handle the largest sheet you expect to handle. $50,000-$200,000 I would expect. http://jordanglass.com/index-2.html http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=fzN&q=glass+tempering+ovens&aq=4&aql=&aqi=g10&oq=glass+tempering

Associated Industrial Furnace Question:I should like to know whether industrial diesel, heavy oil or gas fired brick kilns / furnaces exist. If so ho?
I should like to know whether industrial diesel, heavy oil or gas fired brick kilns / furnaces exist. If so how economical are they? Any leads as to where to buy them? The Internet does not seem to provide much information.

  • Answer:Information can usually be found from suppliers. The trick is to know how to find the suppliers. Here’s some help: http://www.thomasnet.com/products/kilns-41980905-1.html

Associated Industrial Furnace Question:Can an air conditioning attached to the furnace in your house blow up?
Every once in a while you hear of bgger industrial air conditionings on sky scrapers or commercial buildings getting old, and then people reposrt a big bang, and the air conditioning blows up. Can this happen to a house airconditioning??? And what signs should you look for when you try your air conditioning out for the first time in the spring after a cold canadian winter?

  • Answer:Dan and Irv are right. Your home A/C unit isn’t likely yo explode on you. Your water heater however…. that is a different story. The first thing you should do before you fire up your A/C is to make sure it warm enough outside. Operating the unit when it is below, say 55F (13C) is inviting liquid refrigerant to damage your compressor. Slugging is the term. Other things to check: – Clean filter – Clean condenser (outside) coil. Just hose it down. Be careful not to bend or damage the fins. If it looks really dirty, then call for a service tech to do it. They will come armed with a foaming coil cleaner that will fix it right up. – How’s your evaporator (inside) coil? Be honest now. How many times has the furnace been run with a damaged filter or none at all? Smokers in the home perhaps? Might consider having a pro clean it then. G’luck!

Associated Industrial Furnace Question:Can thermostats in other apts affect my heat?
I live in an apt building that was converted from an old (1850) building. There are 10 apts and one industrial-sized coal furnace. We all have hot water radiators. I have a thermostat and it’s usually set at 60 to 65 degrees. At the same time every night, the heater kicks on, heats my apt to 75 degrees for an hour and then goes completely cold. I have a brand new thermostat that works fine any other time. Can thermostats in other apts affect my heat? If it’s a coal furnace that must be stoked each night, could that affect my heat as well? Thanks.

  • Answer:Central heat (of any source) in a 10 unit complex is poor design. Space conditioning needs to be done one-by-one. The controls in your building would have to “average” the individual demand from individual thermostats and then push the heater to respond to that average. You probably have a few fellow residents turning off their heat at night. Unless you augment your space with heaters, you are fighting a losing battle in that building.

Associated Industrial Furnace Question:furnace duct cleaning?

  • Answer:you can do it yourself, but expect to make a hugh mess. It really is worth the $ to let some pros do it. they already have all the right tools and expirence.

Associated Industrial Furnace Question:Lennox furnace only comes on after power is shut down then restored?
I am trying to find out which componet of a industrial sized lennox furnace is not operating. although all the componets look the same as a regular home gas furnace. The furnace will go through one heating cycle blower motor will shut down but inducer keeps blowing constanly. if I turn digital thermostat off and back on inducer spins but no gas is turned on to the unit, if I switch the breaker off then back on the unit will fire up and work though one heating cycle, is the problem my circuit card or digital thermostat, or something else? thanks.

  • Answer:Your High-limit may be causing the unit to lock out, when you shut off the power ,you break this lock out and allow another cycle.

Hotel Furnace

Question
Let me tell you a story from a landlord’s seat.
I own a townhouse that I used to live in. I lived in it for 15 years, and
it took that long to pay it off. When it was paid off, I started to save
my
money. 5 years later I had the downpayment for a much nicer/bigger house.
I
rented out the townhouse for $850.  Of that $850, $200 goes for condo
fees,
and another hundred for property taxes. So really I get $550.  The first
tenent I had decided to knock down a wall between two bedrooms. This
caused
the roof to sag and the repairs  cost me $11,000.  Not to mention they
owed
me two months rent when they took off. I found them and brought them to
court. The court costs were $2000. I won my case, but the poor tenents
were
on welfare, so I got nothing. Ok my next tenents (who only lived there for
six months stole the washer, dryer, fridge and stove.  My current tenents
seem OK so far, but they were saying the furnace was not working. I had it
inspected, and the gas company turned off the gas. I need to buy a new
furnace, which I am doing. But the tenents say it is too cold to live with
no heat, so they moved into a hotel, and are telling me I have to pay
their
hotel bill. The furnace guys tell me they can only put a new one in next
week. The furnace is going to cost me about $3000. They are a family of
six
in a hotel for ten days. Who knows what that’ll cost. I thought it was
going
to be a good idea to rent out the home my kids grew up in. I want to keep
it
for them, when they have their own families, but I’m not sure I’ll be able
to.  Renting it out is just costing me too much. I have not made any
profit
at all. It is turning into a money pit. If all tenents were Ok, it would
not
be a problem. My current tenents are OK. It is not their fault about the
furnace, but did they really have to go to a hotel?  Anyway, I am just
whinning here. I am sure you have your own troubles. Have a nice day.

Answers
If I were you, I put in couple CSA approved Electric Heaters. Adjust the
heater’s control so that the room temperature is maintain and above 70
degree.  If they insist to live in the Hotel, It is up to them. And is not
for you to worry, but if they want you to pay for the Hotel Cost, then they
will have to take it to court.  And if they Not Pay Rent, then prepare to
serve the Form N4 – Termination of Tenancy for non-Payment of Rent right
away on the next month.

It is not your fault that the furnace breaks down.  And you have already
taken the immediate action, It is the Gas Company that takes time to ship
the furnace in and install.  However you can call them to speed up the
process or purchase it form another store.

What if a tornado, lighting hits them or the tenant carelessly burn up your
townhouse because they didn’t turn off the stove, is it your fault?  Or
Hydro Company had a blew transformer, and the meat in their freeze went bad.
It is the unexpected.  If the cause is not by you, then you shouldn’t have
to be responsible for it.   However, I would suggest you and your tenant
both to purchase appropriate insurance to cover each of you.

Also make sure you have a Working Smoke Detector and a Carbon Monoxide in
your Rental unit. It is a by-law.

Associated Hotel Furnace Question: vet looking for furnace apartment orlando florida?
Hello I’m a vet that is looking for a place to rent a furnace apartment or hotel don’t have alot of money ,but somewhere safe and cheap can anyone help. Furnished sorry typing to fast

  • Answer:First off, thank you for your military service. The word you are looking for is however ‘furnished’, not ‘furnace’. I don’t live in Orlando, so I really can’t say. But I would suggest that you go to your local housing authority or look online for low-income housing organizations. The housing authority will have tons of flyers and info – and pretty much you can find that same info online. Keep in mind that the phrase ’safe and cheap’ isn’t really always valid in the real world. ‘Cheap’ places experience a lot of drug traffic and fights, break-ins, you name it – all kinds of unsavory behavior. Sometimes even the hallway is used as a restroom or a convenient place to throw up or even pass out. ‘I couldn’t make it to the bathroom’.

Associated Hotel Furnace Question:I need a good chainsaw for work?
I work at a hotel where we heat our pool, spa, and half of the building with a Hawken wood furnace boiler system. I need to cut about 10 cord of wood per month and i need a good saw for probably as cheap as i can get that will last. The boss doesn’t want to spend a whole lot. What is a good saw you would recommend?

  • Answer:If you are cutting that amount of wood you need a decent saw-not one that you can buy cheaply and will break down every few times you use it. The previous reply was good. There is only one-well perhaps two makes that are any good for serious cutting-Stihl and Husqvana though Stihl is the best but they are both expensive-you get what you pay for. I would never buy a second hand chain saw except in exceptional circumstances. There are different grades of machines available-for example for the Professional for heavy duty use-for the farmer smallholder-and for the person who only cuts occasionally. If your boss does not want to spend money its going to end up costing him money in the end if you get an inferior machine. I cut tropical hardwoods abroad where there is difficulty in obtaining parts and repairs so there is only one make for me-Stihl-they are absolutely the best even though my biggest ones cost more than £1,000. I have used Husqvana on occasions but they do not last as well as Stihls

Associated Hotel Furnace Question:The sims 2 ds help please?
ok people say to recharge the metal detector go to the hotels furnace and it will give u an option to recharge with fuel rods.. but does it let u do this when the furnace is full? :P and how do u save that guy from the aliens and how can i make money quick xD

  • Answer:Yes you can charge the metal dector when the furnace is full. The only timeyou can`t is when it`s empty. To save the guy from the aliens you have to have a water gun which you can get from some guy who will be standing outside the hotel. To make money quick go into the desert with your metal dector and find as much stuff as you can and sell it all. Obviously try to have as many guests as possible at your hotel and keep them happy. Happy playing =]

Associated Hotel Furnace Question:Landlord hasn’t fixed heat. ALMOST A FULL MONTH NO HEAT.?
My husband and I, our two year old son and my sister recently rented a house month to month. On Thanksgiving Day, we started having problems with the furnace, it would only sometimes kick on, and when it did, the front yard smelled like gas (It is a giant unit on the roof). I contacted the landlord the next day and told her the problem. Her husband looked at it that day and said it needed a new part. They would have to order it, said they would have it in a week and brought a space heater. Dec 1 arrives and the landlord’s son comes by to collect the rent, saying that they needed the rent to pay for the part. I couldn’t pay it until the 6th due to the move and my SSI check being late. We ended up buying 2 more space heaters. Now, this morning, Dec. 21, almost a full month later, I wake up to 53 degrees in the house. Outside its -4 degrees. The 4 space heaters we have running can’t put out enough heat. I call the landlord again and she says the part should have been in last week, but “hopefully” it will be in tomorrow. She also sends her husband over with a 50 ft extension cord so we can put another space heater in our room without blowing all the fuses. At this point I have no idea what I can do. We don’t have money to move again, less than 60 days after the first move. We literally have NO money until my husband gets paid tomorrow. The best we could do is move into a hotel TOMORROW, wait for the furnace to get fixed, and hope we can get reimbursed for the hotel. I don’t know if she is blowing me off or if she is really having trouble getting a part. Is there anything I can do? I live in hobart indiana. The housing authority has a year waiting list, we contacted them before we moved in here. I can’t hold out with space heaters, thats the problem. Its 53 degrees in the house with 4 space heaters running constantly, they all have to run on low or we end up blowing fuses. If it was going to take this long, wouldn’t it have been a common courtesy to give me some sort of update in the THREE AND A HALF WEEKS we have been without heat. During those three and a half weeks, we haven’t been able to use 1 of the bedrooms, and we have pretty much secluded ourselves in the back family room. We have towels IN the door jams to keep drafts out and its STILL 53 degrees. My son has to stay in our bedroom ALL day because if he comes out and eats in the 2nd warmest room, his hands start to turn purple. We CANNOT live like this.

  • Answer:The housing authority does NOT have a one year waiting list. That is for welfare housing, which is not what you would be calling about. Call them about the heat. The landlord HAS to provide you with a heat source. If the furnace is the only heat source (no fire place, no baseboard heaters, etc) they have to fix the furnace ASAP. Unfortunately for you ordering is part is taking action, as the landlord can not effect mail service. However, unless the son is a licensed HVAC technician the landlord legally has not done anything. The housing authority will come out the same day you call, unless there is something like a storm going on that slows them down. They will verify you do not have working heat and determine what to do. Most likely they will give you a report and tell you to call a HVAC tech yourself and deduct it from the rent. They will tell the landlord to expect the deduction, and fine him/her as well for being a jerk. They may tell you to go to a hotel, but it is doubtful with the space heaters. But ask them about it. The landlord will not have to pay for the hotel, you can pick any hotel you want. The landlord will pay 1/30th of your rent toward the hotel per pay.

Associated Hotel Furnace Question:Fastest way to evict tenants living in my home in NJ?
I have an owner occupied rental, tenants living in my home on the 2nd floor, we live downstairs. It is a month to month agreement in New Jersey and I believe because we live in the home, it should be easier to evict them, their not covered by certain tenancy things from what i’ve read in the truth in renting guide. They are nightly disturbing us, stomping around loudly on purpose, waking up my kids, avoiding us altogether to communicate about late rent payments, and they have only been here since April. Their May payment was only $800 out of $1400 owed, and they have paid June but nothing for July. In May our furnace went so we had no hot water for a few days and we kindly paid for a hotel for them during the inconvenience, not many landlords would do this, but we did. After they left, the hotel charged us an additional $200 because our lovely tenants flooded the room destroying hotel property and didnt tell the hotel employee, just left, calling later to ask for a new room. They used the furnace dying as an excuse not to pay May’s rent, trying to scare us that its a vital facility, etc, etc. But I know the law, and we fixed it as fast as we could….we live here too with my 4 kids, obviously we’re not going to ignore the problem. Since then, they text us at 2 am complaining their cable box is working weird, it’s too hot, the a/c units we LENT them aren’t enough, their disabled and don’t have to pay us, etc. etc. It’s SO ridiculous, its obvious they abuse the system and try to look for any little problem and turn it into a big one to live here for free for several months. The other thing to is they lied and said it was the husband, wife and 14 yr old son moving here. The day they move in, along with them comes their disabled senior citizen grandma who obviously is their ticket to free rentals but who is NOT on the agreement, therefore I think illegally here. They got evicted before they moved to our home and we naively rented to them, BIG mistake. I am uncomfortable in my own home, the husband only comes out to walk his dog when im around, he’s too chicken to talk to my husband but he’ll walk by giving me dirty looks. They demanded upon moving in all the premium cable channels and dvr boxes, internet, etc and they’ve been getting these services on top of about 10 to fifteen pay per view movies a month thats getting charged to our account and they haven’t paid a dime for. When they moved in they said: take our old washer, old mower, etc and I cautioned my husband not to take things from them, they could hold it against us. Their not our friends, their our renters. Now they ARE trying to say my husband took their washer/dryer and sold it without their permission, which i’m sure is another excuse they’ll use for not paying us. Their treating us like we’re the system and we owe them and should be thanking them they’ve partially paid rent. I feel like i’ve adopted some ungrateful children, their horrible. They all don’t work, they sit up there collecting checks and complain about every little thing. I’ve researched a lot, but the problem is a lot of it applies to regular leases, not owner occupied rentals for month to month agreements. I want to try to give them a shorter notice, I don’t want to giive them a 30 day notice then go to court. I know they’ll prolong it as much as they can, it’s what they did at their last rental and then received assistance from DYFS to pay their 1st and last mths rent here. I just want them OUT. Any advice?

  • Answer:Wow, I feel really sorry for you. Kick ‘em out as soon as you get the opportunity. The hotel part was just ridiculous.

Associated Hotel Furnace Question:Is landlord responsible for lodging during a repair?
I own a 2 family house. One tenant receives Section 8 rental subsidy. The old oil furnace to her unit kept breaking down, so we ordered a new gas furnace unit. The installer began the work to replace it the same day we disconnected the old unit. The house is not completely without heat; 2 of the bedrooms and the full bath have built-in electric wall radiators that give full heat and do not depend on the furnace at all. It has been 4 days, and will most likely be finished by the weekend. The weather has been chilly (35 at night, 45 during the day), but not life-threatening cold. I realize it has been inconvenient, but there is no other way to change the furnace. The tenant reported me to the health department for not providing heat, and is demanding that I pay for a hotel until the work is done. Am I legally required to provide lodging during this repair? It does not have “practically no heat”. The kitchen and living room have no heat. The bedrooms and bath have full heat from the electric radiators. I got a call from the health department today. They sent an inspector to the apartment ot investigate the complaint of “no heat provided”. He called me to say that the living room was 66 degrees, the kitchen was 65, and the bedrooms were 76. The bathroom was only 58 because the tenants didn’t turn the heater on in there. According to the health inspector, a working source of heat and temperatures above 65 in the living areas indicated that there was no issue of lack of heat. As he put it “Even if you didn’t replace the furnace, you’d still be within the law as long as the electric heating is working to full capacity”. That’s a relief!

  • Answer:It depends on what state you are in, because the laws are different, state to state. But, in general, if the house had some source of heating, then you are not responsible for hotel costs. They could have and should have stayed slept in the bedrooms. Furthermore, the kitchen and living room were not ‘unusable’. For the sake of you BBB standing (if you have one) you can offer and $ or % amount concession on their next month’s rent. Also, as this has happened to me before, you should say that you will have to have your lawyers consider it, and they are going to need to see your tenent’s receipt from the hotel stay. 1. Hotels do not take cash — but in the event that they found one that did, that hotel will still have record of their stay, and they should be able to obtain a copy. 2. This is a classic scam, so be careful — they may not have stayed at a hotel at all.

Associated Hotel Furnace Question: :P lease read my essay and tell me what you think. Please fix any spelling that you find. Im from Norway lol?
:To: Sonja Meijer Bundeskanzleramt Postfach 6261 124 Berlin There is complete silence in the air. The inevitable thought of the man and women is slowly appearing in the back of their already filled heads. Heads filled with the most sincere emotions for the people that they offered everything to keep safe. To keep safe from the ever growing army’s for the anti-Semitic believers. The signs of a cowardly war is approaching. A war that has slowly been growing. Ever so carefully, waiting for the perfect time to strike. A war in witch the innocent lives of women and children will be lost. And for this I ask, for what? For believing in the fate that others disagree? These are the signs of a holy war. A war that one of the sides has not asked for, or wanted. As I am writing this I have not the slightest idea if this letter will be read by the ones that I love so dearly. If it dose not arrive to my beloved wife and unborn child then you can reassure yourselves that your safety and well-being will be in my prayers. If you do receive this letter then I will reassure you that everything down here in the Netherlands is going as planed. After I passed the borderline from Germany to Netherlands the cold sweat in the back of my neck started to fade. Now we were only a couple of days away from mine, and many others new home for an undecided amount of time, Huize Kraaybeek. A small and unheard-of refugee camp. Filled with the men and women who left loved ones, to protect them from a inevitable war. Huize Kraaybeek lies in the second largest town in the Netherlands, Rotterdam. It lies on the outskirts of the city, away from unwelcome visitors. After 2 days of travelling we arrived at Huize Kraaybeek, as soon as we set foot on the new country we were given orders by the owner and boss of the so called hotel. A hotel for wealthy tourist and powerful and most likely corrupt politicians and their small families. We where never told his name, but we were told in advance to call him Albert Smit, to keep him, his associates and the refugees safe. When Albert unlooked the two locks on the front door, we for the first time got to see our new home for an undetermined amount of time. It was spectacular. The walls where painted with the finest paint and the carpet was made of Berlin wool. The depressed look on your tired faces started to change. There was laughter and excitement in the air. But something did not feel right. As soon as our lifeless faces turn around Albert came inn slightly irritated. “Keep moving too your right and down the ladder”. And as soon as the mood changed the lifeless faces started to slowly appear once again. Once we got down the cold and wet ladder we realized for the first time what was in store for us. It was a hot, wet and depressing furnace room with no windows with just a single light bulb and the extremely hot furnace oven. It felt like we where in the deepest depth of hell. Locked out from society. The room was no bigger then the reception at the theatre we used to go to a long time ago. As I write this I get more and more anxious to go home and witness the birth of our child. To see my family and your annoying mother. To get up early, before anyone has even opened there eye lids to go to work, and not come home until late at night when everybody has gotten tired. And this anxious feeling will only become stronger as time goes by. As I sit here staring at the mouldy cement walls I am dreaming off going home. But I don’t know when that day will come. But that is enough of me and my unimportant complaints. As long as you and our family is safe then I will do this with a smile. I would like you to know that you and your families will be in my prayers. And hopefully this predicted war is nothing more then a lie, and I will be back as son as I left. I hope to see you all soon. Abreham J. Meijer

Associated Hotel Furnace Question:I’m considering a visit to Death Valley.?
Has anyone stayed in the hotels at either Stovepipe Wells or Furnace Creek? If so, what did you think of them? Also, what are the best things to see in Death Valley? Has anyone stayed in the hotels at either Stovepipe Wells or Furnace Creek? If so, what did you think of them? Also, what are the best things to see in Death Valley? I’ve reposted this to get more answers.

  • Answer:You will love Death Valley! There is sooooo much to see, you will not be able to see it all in a day. I stayed inside the park once, the rooms are quite basic, actually downright primitive. But they are a place to lay your head. If you are coming from Vegas, there are hotel/casino places to stay in Beatty, much better accomodations, and less expensive. Then you can visit Rhyolite on your way to Death Valley (definitely worth the trip!). In Death Valley, one of the coolist things I did was just park on the side of the road (just about anywhere) and walk out to the salt flats. It’s one of the coolest things to see, it looks like snow, but it’s salt. I would take a hiking stick or some type of stick with you to test the ground in front of you before you walk. There are some soft areas that you could sink ito a little bit. Badwater is a great site. It can look a bit muddy and mucky sometimes of the year, but when it is a nice bright white, it’s a amazing site. Definitely go up the mountain (sorry, I can’t remember the name of it) It’s towards the southern end of the park.. Great vistas, and the most amazing panoramas. Absolutely breathtaking. Death Valley is easily one of the most beautiful creations in this country, it just happens to have a bad sounding name that turns people off. Enjoy your trip.

Associated Hotel Furnace Question:Can anyone help me with an old movie title?

Associated Hotel Furnace Question:Bad dream, embarressed, burning dog, yelling aunt?
I had a dream a few nights back, with multiple “scenes” in it. First I was with my church youth group, and we went on a trip. There was a gas station there and for whatever reason i decided to buy some of the personal lube they were selling. So I tried to secretly hand it to the cashier when suddenly everyone was standing in front of me and there were lots of other groups of school kids standing around to see. So suddenly everyone goes “ohhhhhhhhhh!!!!!” ya know like stupid jr high kids do, and my dad tried to back me up and my youth paster was pissed and when we left she drove us all into and through a mall and we were going crazy everywhere. Then I had a dog, a dog that doesnt really exist. He could talk and he was smart like ppl and everything and he was like my very best friend. But then he was trapped in a burning furnace in a basement of a shop. It wasnt like a normal furnace cus the whole room was on fire. My family, kept saying he’ll be fine and they wanted me to do other things we were doing all this stuff we needed to go to this place and I kept saying we need to save him but they wouldn’t let me. Finally he broke himself out and I got there when it would have been to late and he was mad at me. I didn’t know why I couldn’t overcome the will of my family to go save our talking dog. Then I was at some hotel, we were hosting a party at my aunts house. I had to get to the party but it was storming. Me, my dad, and my friend all had to run there (or maybe we were on bikes i cant remember) but we had to run a long ways, me and my friend seperated from my dad which I liked for some reason, but also made me really nervous. We ran a long ways down dirt roaded alleys and lots of places and it was raining and storming the whole time. We got to the party and I was releived it seemed as though all my troubles were gone. But then my aunt came and got me to yell at me. I remember her making me so mad. (she has yelled at me for things before, I actually did do what she was yelling at me for but my parents beleived me when i lied so i got away with it. I never did even feel guilty though, and still dont. I was just mad at her for yelling at me like that, she also yelled at both my sisters, a few cousins, my mom, my other aunt, my dad, my friends mom and well, you get it) so I was so mad when she yelled at me I screamed back this time, this time i told her exactly how i feel. I got a few dirt tracks on her rug and she was telling me how im gonna scrub it for weeks to get it out. I remember at the time knowing that that was a lie and that she really didn’t have a reason to yell at me. I remember it being redicrulously faint tracks to the point that when she told me to leave i stormed into the room where the party was where she ran after me. I yelled at her and said fine tiffany (her name) I will leave my own party. If your gonna treat me that way then I dont want to be here anyways. I said it in from of everybody so my parents and everybody would see that she was kicking me out to make her look bad. And heck, it worked really well. My parents chewed her out and left too. what do u think it means?

  • Answer:You have the same dream in three different versions. The theme of all three is needing to stand up for what you need/want. Only in the final dream do you succeed in standing up for yourself. Dreams present real things, emotions, or experiences in symbolic form. So the lube in the first dream represents personal, private needs. You deserve to be able to take care of your personal needs without others mocking you. In the second dream, your burning dog represents yourself, probably “burning” with embarrassment. You deserve to be able to take care of yourself without being embarrassed or hindered by others. In the third dream, you overcame difficulties in order to fulfill your responsibilities (attending the party) only to be blamed for very minor damage. You deserve to be given credit for what you accomplish without being criticized or embarrassed for trivialities. This dream is both problem solving and rehearsal. Your subconscious mind presented three separate scenarios, so your sleeping self could try out different ways to solve the problems. You also rehearsed different behaviors to see which worked out best. By the third scenario, your subconscious mind had solved the problem and determined the best course of action.

Gas Furnace Efficiency

Question
Oilheat $ 1.96 per million BTU’s
Natural Gas & Propane $ 2.06 ” ” ”
Heat Pumps $ 6.20 ” ” ”
Elec.Resistance/
Elec. Water Heaters $12.40 ” ” ”

Wood Stoves $51.00 ” ” ”

Wood heat four times the cost of electric heat? No way, not even giving
electric 100% efficiency and wood 65%. If that were true there would’nt
be any use of wood for heating where electricity is available. Something
is wrong here.
Answers
Have you ever seen the humorous :^ ecomonic analysis of buring wood. It
goes something like this. “I’m going to save some money on my heating
bills by getting a wood stove. By chopping my own wood, my fuel will be
free!”

Cost analysis

Stove $1,000
4 cords of wood – sweat
chainsaw – $200
log spliter – $700
shed for wood $2,000
pickup truck $20,000

It ends up with some outragous number like $40,000.

Maybe that $51 is based on the inclusion of some of these costs. :)

BTW,
I’ve derived alot of my heat from a wood stove over the past few years
and I’ve avoided many of those cost. But I got to admit, I’m
getting soft, and I don’t enjoy lugging all that wood around like I
used to. However, I’m looking forward to
using my new condensing gas furnace this winter and avoid some of the
exercise I’ve gotten from burning wood.
Associated Gas Furnace Efficiency Question:How much to replace a mid-efficiency gas furnace?
Mine’s 18. Gonna go. I want to save now but everyplace I call won’t even give me an idea of how much it might be. Don’t need duct work or anything, just a new furnace.

  • Answer:Don’t waste your money on middle of the road. This is an area where labor to do the work is 1/2 of the price or more. The installation cost is the same for the cheap furnace and the high effecinecy model. Invest in the highest efficiency unit you can. It might cost a bit more than the lower end models, but it will save you a bunch in energy. The cost of the furnace will be fixed today, but the cost of heating oil and gas has been steadily rising. This is truly one of those “pay me now or pay more utility bills later” type deals. Also, the high efficency models will add appeal to your home value if you had to sell. The HVAC companies won’t give you a price over the phone because they need to measure your home and estimate the overall efficency of your home to suggest the appropriate size (BTU) of the new unit. This will be different than your old unit for sure.

Associated Gas Furnace Efficiency Question:What is the difference in costs savings between a 95% efficiency gas furnace?
And does the cost difference make the energy efficiency tax credit worth the extra expense?

  • Answer:The savings would depend on the efficiency of what you had. so if you had an 80% furnace the annual savings would be 15% of your total heating expense. There would be some additional savings on the electric side due to the new furnace fan motor being an ECM type motor. It will take a few years for the payback to be realized. The real question will be what the repair cost can be once the warranty is up on the new furnace. The parts are a lot more expensive over the parts on a ,say 92% single speed type model. The tax credit and the gas company rebates offer some relief tho.

Associated Gas Furnace Efficiency Question:What is the average cost for a high efficiency gas furnace?
I am looking at the 90 & 95 rated Trane units. I am fairly certain it is smaller unit, 3 ton. Any ideas? Thanks

  • Answer:Depends on what part of the country you live in. Look to see how many burners you have on your furnace. Each burner is roughly 20,000 BTU’s. Sounds like you need an 80,000 BTU furnace with 3 ton drive. Here in GA you can have a 90% 80K BTU Trane Furnace installed for around $2800-$3000. This would only include the furnace and new PVC flue ran, no extras like a high efficient air cleaner(fancy name for a good filter) Trane is a great choice BTW.

Associated Gas Furnace Efficiency Question:Can you recemmend a reliable 90% efficiency gas furnace?
I have a small 1k sq ft home and good insulation.

  • Answer:Most of the high efficiency furnaces today are pretty reliable, unlike 15 years ago when they were more trouble than they were worth. I put in quite a few 90% Payne furnaces, (low dollar Carrier) and have had pretty good luck with them, can’t remember ever having a service call on one. Goodman is another low dollar unit that seems to be pretty reliable. Try to avoid all the bells and whistles,….they can cause service problems. Get as simple a furnace as possible and, as long as it’s installed properly, you shouldn’t have any problems. Good luck 20+ yrs tech.

Associated Gas Furnace Efficiency Question:High Efficiency Gas Furnace Savings? Worth Updating?
I am looking to buy a home here in Dayton, OH that is about 3000 sq. ft. but has high gas and electric heating and cooling bills. It has a Trane Furnace and air system, but I don’t know how old the unit is yet. My question is: How much of a savings have you noticed by changing from a less efficient gas furnace to one of the newer high or ultra high efficient models. Thanks, Steve / OHIO

  • Answer:15% or more on replacing equipment. If it has higher utility bills than normal I would have home checked out for how well its sealed and insulated. Attic insulation is easiest place to check and improve.

Associated Gas Furnace Efficiency Question:Furnace efficiency in a condo building. How can we lower our gas bill?
I live in a 5 floor condo building with about 25 units in the building. Heat is supplied to each unit via hot water baseboard radiators. The hot water is supplied by one furnace for the whole building. Individual units have no control over the amount of heat they get but temperatures inside each unit generally range from 68 to 74 degrees. The association has informed us that the gas bill for this winter is so high that we are going to be charged a special assessment to cover the costs that the building’s normal budget cannot cover. The building is about 35 years old and I suspect that our furnace has a very low Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency rating. Are there companies that will look at our furnace and recommend ways we can boost its efficiency? I understand gas prices are very high right now but there has got to be a way to control the building’s gas consumption. The association is meeting tonight to discuss this.

  • Answer:what does your lease say??? if it says heat included, then by law they cant charge you for heat…if they do have the right to charge you for heat, then you have the right to control your own heat…they cant have it both ways…

Associated Gas Furnace Efficiency Question:Gas Furnace efficiency.?
How do you increase the efficiency of a gas furnace?

  • Answer:There are a multitude of aspects. Bottom line answer before reading all of this is: Your furnace efficiency can not be changed, it is designed by the manufacturer to be what it is. You can upgrade to a better one. I have worked on furnaces/boilers that were manufactured going back to the turn of the century… that would mean the one before last…. 1900. There is a great deal of iron in them and they are solid for a very long time. I serviced/replaced oil and gas conversion burners in them. In real terms, they were 40 to 50% efficient. There were things I did to increase the combustion efficiency and it helped the people. Those days are gone. Times are a changing and the old thinking got abandoned with the high cost of energy. Equipment was engineered to squeeze as many useful BTU’s out of them as possible. To simplify this answer… There are two separate “efficiency’s” for you to bear in mind, 1) appliance and 2) building. Appliance efficiency is a word to describe the percentage of BTU’s retained from the combustion process and deposited into the living space verses the percentage of BTU’s that leaves the appliance to the outside of the building which is contained in combustion products. If everything operating up to snuff per the manufactures specifications, and installed correctly, then there is nothing you can do except upgrade to a more efficient furnace. If the furnace is installed correctly (this is often overlooked) then the only thing you can do as a homeowner is to keep the air filter new. Shut the furnace off when changing it so that dirt does not get sucked up into and plug stuff up. Building efficiency. Basically, how much heat is retained in the structure over a given period of time. There are ultra efficient building designs and then the old style building built when heating costs were not a consideration. Air infiltration through small openings will increase your heating bill as bad as poor/little insulation would. It isn’t cost effective to tear a home half apart just to re-insulate and seal off the cracks. There are band-aids, but you can not get it up to the new standards of brand new construction very eaily or cheaply. You can not go wrong by using a reputable heating contractor. CORRECT installation is paramount. They can check to make sure your furnace is operating safely. BTW, electric heat is 100% efficient. There is no vent to remove combustion products (fumes). Every BTU from the heating elements stays within the structure.

Associated Gas Furnace Efficiency Question:Will a concord high efficiency gas furnace 75 000 BTU heat a three bedroom bungalow with a full basement?

  • Answer:Many factors can influence the correct answer. How cold does it get where you are? How much insulation do you have? How air tight are the doors and windows? How air tight is the entire house? How good is the glass? How big is the house? Three bedrooms covers a very wide range of square foot sizes. If the answers show that everything is up to snuff, this should be a good furnace size. Unless we know a lot more, you will only get guesses and generic answers.

Associated Gas Furnace Efficiency Question:Hvac question: What is ment by the term redundant pilot ignition system in a high efficiency furnace?
A high efficiency gas furnace, what is a redundant pilot ignition system-redundant being the key word here. What do they mean by redundant?

  • Answer:SAFETY STUFF So’s ya don’t Smothercate or BleW-Up… “A self-checking fuel ignition system of the pilot ignition type including a sampling flame sensor which effects periodic testing of the operability of a spark generating circuit to provide ignition sparks, and an energizing circuit which operates independently of the spark generating circuit but under the control of the flame sensor, to control the operation of fuel valves of the system and to effect the shut down of the system for loss of flame or ignition spark. “

Furnace Wholesale

Question
Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase a furnace wholesale? Mine is
near the end of its useful life but I don’t really want to pay someone
to install something I can do on my own.
Answers
Please, Glenn Don’t get mad…..
If you were qualified you would know how to get one
! Just yesterday I saw the cover to the attic opening, which had been blown
up into the attic, just hanging frome the opening. Also blew the door off
the furnace. Now the ceiling has a 7 foot long crack, and the light bulb
needs replacing.

What is the life of a furnace?? It may not be 90+ efficient,
but it will take a long time to save on utill… bills to pay for a new
unit. Maybe others will say do it.
Just be careful. The story above is true, and was caused by a
dirty pilot light…. Don’t take much ! I already said too much
Associated Furnace Wholesale Question:Where can I find wholesale coal near Northern PA?
I am looking for a inexpensive source for coal somewhere, prefereraby northern PA. The coal would be that which I could burn in a coal furnace with a stoaker, probably pea coal. I once heard a fellow say he could go down with a dump truck and buy it cheap but I did not ask him exactly where to get it.

  • Answer:There are a number of coal dealers in the Scranton area.I think what you need is Nut Coal. To enjoy a wholesale discount you will need to haul the coal and the minimum sale will be 20-30 tons but, remember….unlike wood coal dosen’t go bad

Associated Furnace Wholesale Question:Wholesale Air Filters?
Does anybody know of a wholesale vendor that could sell direct (through Internet, obviously) to consumers boxes of A/C and furnace filters (especially 20×20x1 and 14×20x1)? I am looking for boxes of 12 (or even more) of the 30 day filters. When I go down to the hardware store, I usually buy in bulk so I always have a stockpile at home ready for the change. But I was wondering if it would be a lot cheaper to buy the same boxes from the wholesaler.

Associated Furnace Wholesale Question:Rehabbing and wholesaling junkers???
Just got into wholesaling and rehabbing junkers. Are there any experienced rehabbers who can break down the approx cost of repairs i.e replacing a kitchen, bathroom, electric, siding, furnace, water heater, carpet paint, windows, plumbing etc. We are getting good deals, but our repair costs have been off and we need help???

  • Answer:A lot of times it is quicker and easier and no more costly to just tear it down and build new. The water, sewer, electric and maybe even a good foundation already there. You can spend a lot of money renovating an old house and still have an old house. Especially if it wasn’t built to modern standards.

Associated Furnace Wholesale Question:YORK 13 SEER 2.5 TON MC^2 Condeser actual Value???
Hi, Iam in NJ. I had my condenser change once, and they guy took max time 30 minutes to install it. I plan changing my furnace, evaporator coil due to its age. I was wondering if anyone out there knows what is the wholesale price for a 13 SEER YORK mc^2 condenser really costs, and how much more money it should cost the guy to install it (wiring it, welding it, freon)…..He already would have to charge it with freon anyway since Iam having my evaporator coil changed..

  • Answer:ADVICE: GET 4 BIDS ON INSTALLING: 1. NEW SYSTEM COMPLETE 2. NEW EVAP AND COND UNIT. 3. NEW EVAPORATOR. PRICE OUT ANY ALTERNATE BRAND OR MODELS THEY MAY SUPPLY ON THE ABOVE. MANY COMPANIES CARRY 2 OR MORE BRANDS. (WOULDN’T IT BE NICE TO HAVE A COUPLE OF BIDS ON THE SAME EQUIPMENT?) I WILL RECOMMEND GOING WITH THE MOST EFFICIENT SYSTEM YOU CAN JUSTIFY SINCE ENERGY COSTS ARE VERY LIKELY TO INCREASE. IT IS NICE TO HAVE A BRAND THAT DOES NOT LOCK YOU TO JUST ONE SERVICE COMPANY. IF YOU ARE DISSATISFIED WITH THE INSTALLING COMPANY, YOU WANT TO BE ABLE TO GET ANOTHER EASILY. SMALLER TOWNS CAN OFFER FEW CHOICES. TRY NOT TO GET A COMPANY THAT IS TOO FAR AWAY SINCE YOU MAY NEED FAST SERVICE AND YOU DON’T WANT TO HAVE TO PAY MILEAGE OR WAIT A DAY OR TWO. YOU CAN CHECK THE LIBRARY FOR INFORMATION IN CONSUMERS REPORT. SOME LIBRARIES WILL RESEARCH AND SEE IF THEY HAVE THAT INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE. WHEN YOU HAVE MADE A COMPANY CHOICE ASK FOR TWO OR THREE “RECENT” CUSTOMER INSTALLATIONS IN YOUR AREA SO YOU CAN SEE IF THERE ARE ANY.

Question:4
Subject:How much will it cost us to replace HVAC system?
Content::My fiance and I are currently in the process of bidding on our first house. It is a HUD property in amazingly good condition, except for the fact that the furnace and A/C unit are missing. The duct work and wiring are all there, but the units themselves will have to be replaced. There is a built-in $2200 escrow allotment for the replacement of the HVAC, but I need to know how much more, if any, we’ll need to pay out-of-pocket. Can anybody out there give me a standard ball-park estimate of the price of each unit? It can be wholesale, as we have a contractor friend who will do the installation for us if we provide the units. Some background info on the house specs: 1900 sq. feet, no basement, 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, about 10-12 windows, north-facing. How big/ what kind of a furnace and A/C unit will we need to adequately heat and cool this house? Sorry for the lengthy question, but this is the first house we’ve ever bought and we don’t even know where to begin with the HVAC thing.

  • Answer:4-5 ton 13 sear rating for 2000 sq ft. You are looking at 3000.00 – 4000.00 installed. Get estimates. The labor is the killer, so make sure your estimates cover all labor cost before the work begins.

Associated Furnace Wholesale Question:Bible contradictions? Please enlighten me?
I find it incredible that you ask me to believe that the earth was created in six literal days; women come from a man’s rib; a snake, a donkey, and a burning bush spoke human language; the entire world was flooded, covering the mountains to drown evil; all animal species, millions of them, rode on one boat; language variations stem from the tower of Babel; Moses had a magic wand; the Nile turned to blood; a stick turned into a snake; witches, wizards, and sorcerers really exist; food rained from the sky for 40 years; people were cured by the sight of a brass serpent; the sun stood still to help Joshua win a battle, and it went backward for King Hezekiah; men survived unaided in a fiery furnace; a detached hand floated in the air and wrote on a wall; men followed a star which directed them to a particular house; Jesus walked on water unaided; fish and bread magically multiplied to feed the hungry; water instantly turned into wine; mental illness is caused by demons; a “devil” with wings exists who causes evil; people were healed by stepping into a pool agitated by angels; disembodied voiced spoke from the sky; Jesus vanished and later materialized from thin air; people were healed by Peter’s shadow; angels broke people out of jail; a fiery lake of eternal torment awaits unbelievers under the earth … while there is life-after-death in a city which is 1,500 miles cubed, with mansions and food, for Christians only. Please please tell me how it is possible for you to believe such things? Why do none of these things happen now? And if you say they do, then i’m unlikely to believe that due to the fact if they did it would be across the media. Also I have found these, maybe you could help me out by explaining the contradictions :) He ( “God”) said “Thou shalt not kill,” he ordered death for all opposition, wholesale drowning and mass exterminations; punishes offspring to the fourth generation (Ex. 20:5); ordered pregnant women and children to be ripped up (Hos. 13:16); demands animal and human blood to appease his angry vanity; is partial to one race of people; judges women to be inferior to men; is a sadist who created a hell to torture unbelievers; created evil (Is. 45:7); discriminated against the handicapped (Lev. 21:18-23); ordered virgins to be kept as spoils of war (Num. 31:15-18, Deut. 21:11-14); spread dung on people’s faces (Mal. 2:3); sent bears to devour 42 children who teased a prophet (II Kings 2:23-24); punishes people with snakes, dogs, dragons, drunkenness, swords, arrows, axes, fire, famine, and infanticide; and said fathers should eat their sons (Ez. 5:10). Is that nice? Would you want to live next door to such a person? Thankyou! The christians seem to be saying that i don’t have the capability to understand? How very condescending! It’s intresting to be that you don’t seem to give an actual reason or answer to me and just say it’s my fault for not believing. To terry s, it’s funny how you have supported my point without actually realising. YES MEN WROTE THE BIBLE NOT GOD. ITS FULL OF MADE UP STORIES. Haha, thankyou.

  • Answer:I think your questions are valid. Many of the answers here are classic, meaning, they don’t actually answer any part of your question. Just believe Jesus and ignore the things that are grotesque about their god. Wow! And you wonder why it is hard to take Christianity seriously. god always gets credit for the good stuff, but never the blame, that is reserved for us. Oh yes, and the context argument…what context gives anyone justification for ripping up pregnant women and innocent children?

Associated Furnace Wholesale Question:Buying our first house, need advice…?
My wife and I are looking at a foreclosure that has a pool, fenced backyard, 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 2 car garage, storage shed, and a fireplace. The house only has county taxes and the bank is asking $88,000. We had a house inspection and found some problems. We will need: a new furnace, AC, garbage disposal, refrigerator, front and back door, carpet, tile in the bathroom, 2 ceiling fans, interior paint job, washer, and a dryer. We know a lot of work is needed, but the house is in a great neighborhood next to a great school and is the perfect size for a starter house. We live in an apartment that has had shootings and fights, so we want to leave. A new house starts at $105,000 and have city and county taxes which are about $175 a month. County taxes are only about $50 a month We can get the fridge, washer, and doors at wholesale prices through a friend, and know someone who will give us a discount on carpet. After all of these factors, should we get this house Right now the house appraises for $115,000

  • Answer:No. A foreclosure should be deeply discounted to make it worth it. 17k would not cut it for me.

Associated Furnace Wholesale Question:What’s an alternative to buying a whelping box?
They are quite expensive. I’ve been told by breeders that kiddie swimming pools work well as do refridgerator boxes. I’ve also seen people use the bottom part of a dog traveling kennel/crate. I think the bottom part of the kennel would be the best since it would cleanable. I’ve seen whelping pads that I could use in the JB wholesale catalog. I am asking all this because we found a pregnant Cocker Spaniel mix that someone had obviously abandoned ’cause they didn’t want to deal with a pregnant dog. We have been doing tons of research and she’s been to the vet so we feel fairly prepared. Plus, we alreadly (HAPPILY) have several families wanting pups who are the type to make sure it’s spayed/neutered and will give it a FOREVER home! We are setting up her whelping area in our semi-finished basement which is where the furnace is so it’s fairly warm , so do we still need a heating lamp and/or heating pad and if so, how warm should it be? And YES, we are definitely spaying her! THANKS Any additional info. greatly appreciated! She is a very sweet dog and we plan on keeping her and probably one of her pups. We are curious to see what she bred with! She looks mostly like a Cocker Spaniel with maybe Lhapso Apso or Shitzu, very cute. Most importantly, she is very sweet which led us to first think that she was lost but after extensively placing ads and calling vets, shelters, etc… to no avail, she was probably abandoned. She also had no tags or a microchip id and her fur was very matted and she was underweight for a pregnant dog so it was amazing she was so loving.

  • Answer:The area she and the litter will be in need to be very warm as in in the 90s at least for the first couple of weeks or so. One way to do this is to have the box where you can heat it with a warming bulb — since it is a Cockerish sized dog, you can use a large sized crate if you want — they carry them at Walmart for much less than the whelping boxes and you can just go ahead and ‘customize’ it for the whelping by either taking the top off and making a temporary front door for it for after the pups are a little older but otherwise the female can just access it through the door opening at will (and she should have free access to them. You can make the rails on it if you wish, using PVC pipe that fits around the bottom but sits up on pieces of pvc about an inch or so but I never really found the rails to be that useful as long as I dilegently watched thing (and I just do:). UHaul you can buy boxes of clean unprinted on newspaper sheets – that is cool for the whelping box as well as later with the puppies. JB and most of the catalogs have the whelping liners in layers and I would get one of those for the initial whelping and then go with the uhaul newspaper and old blankets and towels — you can get those at goodwill or salvation army (leave the really good ones for the people that need them) or at the dollar stores. Talk with your vet about what s/he wants you to contact him/her emergently for — what signs or symptoms – and keep them informed as to what is going on so they feel part of the loop and can help if needed. You will need to have her given a oxitocin shot after birthing so either you will need to give it (obtained from your vet) or will need to take her in which might be an idea anyway but if the weather is inclimate you might want to have it on hand if you know how to give shots. Have the box/area set up for her soon so she can feel comfortable with it — I actually would put the box in a closet in my bedroom if it were me and then as the pups get older you can move them out of the bedroom if you want but basically you will be sleeping in the basement otherwise.. and you can control the temperature much better up in your room. It will only be temporaray and it would be much better for all of y’all :) Good luck and thanks for being responsible enough to spay/neuter all involved…

Furnace Process

Question
By Peter Sjolander, 1995 Fullerton, Ca.
By Peter Sjolander, 1995 Fullerton, Ca.
The other thing that struck me about the site was the
position of the bog oar furnace. When I stood in the
furnace and looked out from where the door was placed, I
was looking right at the most eastern point of Labrador.
That means that the light from the door of the furnace
was the first thing a Viking would see when coming south
along the coast of Labrador from Greenland.
Answers
I am not sure what was meant by a bog ore furnace. This could be
a ore drying kiln, or an iron smelting furnace. Given the
later comments about iron production, I assume that an iron
smelter was intended. The bloomery furnaces of the Viking period
do not have doors. In the smelting furnace the air supply has to
be controlled to keep the conditions sufficiently reducing to
produce iron. There are apertures in the furnace needed for cleaning
and repairing, but these are closed up with clay or bricks whilst the
furnace is in operation. In the experiment bloomery furnaces I seen
in operation, only the tuyere (air blowing hole) is open. And most of
time the light path would have been blocked by the bellows.

So a nice idea but unlikely to be the case.
Associated Furnace Pliers Question:Why is a blast furnace needed in the Bessmer process?
When making steel: First Iron ore (iron oxide) carbon (coke charcoal, etc.) and limestone are mixed in a furnace and air is blow through The limestone is present to remove silicon but the carbon iron oxide and air blast work to generate a high enough temperature that the carbon can rob the iron oxide of its oxygen. Second the iron in a melted state is subjected to more air flow (atmospheric oxygen to remove the carbon, thereby producing very low carbon iron. Third, carbon is put back into the nearly pure iron to make high carbon steel. This process could be summarized as: • Carbon is used to remove oxygen • Oxygen is used to remove carbon • Carbon is added back in. This seems contradictory! Explain the process and why a blast furnace is needed for the first step and a Bessemer converter might be used in the second case and why after getting all the carbon out the carbon is put back in. Place the development of this process in a a historical context. Additional information might be found on the internet or in the accompanying booklet. In reviewing the steel making process, consider that originally, charcoal from biological sources was used in steel making until it was discovered that coal mined from the ground could be turned into coke, and this would provide the carbon much more cheaply. IF we assume that manmade release of carbon dioxide is a significant factor in global warming, since so much carbon is burned in making steel, perhaps we could find a bio-based source so that we are simply recycling atmospheric carbon rather than increasing it. Could we afford to do this? Would we burn down the environment faster than it grows, Could we afford steel?

  • Answer:The Bessemer process was the first inexpensive industrial process for the mass-production of steel from molten pig iron. The process is named after its inventor, Henry Bessemer, who took out a patent on the process in 1855. The process was independently discovered in 1851 by William Kelly.[1][2] The process is a development of a practice known in China as early as the 200s. [citation needed] The key principle is removal of impurities from the iron by oxidation through air being blown through the molten iron. The oxidation also raises the temperature of the iron mass and keeps it molten.

Associated Furnace Pliers Question:I am in the process of buying a new furnace and a/c condensor and I want to know what brand should I buy?
The condensor has to be a 3 ton unit at least 13 seer and the furnace has to be at least 90,000 btu.preferably 100,000.What brand has the longest life before maintenance(given annual upkeep & P.M.)

  • Answer:At this time Carrier is the easiest to service but any NAME brand unit is worthwhile just be sure that the company you hire to install has been in business for a while and will be there to service the unit after the sale. Like with any trade there are too many fly by nights.

Associated Furnace Pliers Question:I was in the process of purchasing a new furnace and was wondering a couple of things about brands, etc….?
First, I am planning on installing the unit myself. I have a gas furnace and a condenser outside. They are both Lennox however, the unit inside was made in 1974 while the unit outside had been recently replaced in 2002. The evaporator coil was replaced as well. I was looking very carefully at the furnace unit in the basement of my house and noticed it appears to be connect to the ducts and it sits on the floor. It is rectangular and is approximatley 5ft by 2ft. It appears to be something that you can disconnect and remove yourself I notice when looking online the gas furnaces they are of similar size and you can make it fit by cutting appropriate size adaptor to fit your existing ductwork. Of course, there are gas lines you may need to cut etc… The only thing I was wondering about does the evaporater coil in the house need to be changed as well with the new furnace. Finally I was wondering are GOODMAN a good company they commonly sell them new on ebay.

  • Answer:The furnance is easy to replace and a goodman is the most furnance for the least amout of money if you plan on replacing your a coil good luck because you will loose all your freon unless you have a revovery machine.if yoour furnabce is from 1974 it is about 65% efficent.the new ones are 90 plus

Associated Furnace Pliers Question:I have a Dependable Ninety-Two furnace that starts to fire up but cannot complete the process.?
A blue wire has been pulled out of it’s connector but I can’t determine to which wire it should be attached. My choices are green, white or red. Does anyone have a similar configuration? Thanks, Gary

  • Answer:Without seeing a wiring diagrahm it would be hard to say, but if there are no other places where it could go then it would go to the red. red, blue, and black are allways hot wires, and would never be connected to a white or green wire. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Associated Furnace Pliers Question:Why is a blast furnace needed in the Bessemer process? PLEASE HELP!?

  • Answer:In the first stage (blast furnace) there is an excess of carbon and it is partially burnt carbon, carbon monoxide which is instrumental in stripping the oxygen from the iron oxide ore. The oxygen in the second stage (the Bessemer Process) is in gaseous form (not bound to iron) and this reacts with the carbon. In the third stage carbon (and other metals) can be added back in in a controlled amount to produce a steel with the desired precise amount of carbon for given properties of the finished steel. For an historical context see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bessemer_process Certainly reverting to a biological basis for the carbon used in steel making would require a lot of trees. The better answer may be to develop ways to sequester the CO2 produced. In theory there are a number of ways this can be done – google CO2 sequestration. One North Sea gas platform already injects CO2 impurity extracted from natural gas into an deep underground reservoir.

Associated Furnace Pliers Question:is it possible to make a full annealing process of carbon steel (sa 106 gr-C) in electrical furnace?
what method of heating used in electrical furnace

  • Answer:Yes, it is possible. You can have a direct heating furnace, where the nickel-chromium or molybdenum or silicon carbide heating elements are in the same chamber as the work, and the work is heated by radiant heating. Or you can use a retort furnace, where the retort is heated by radiation and the work is heated by convection, within the retort.

Associated Furnace Pliers Question:The process of extracting zinc require more heat energy than that of iron?
The process in the blast furnace is very similar but does extracting zinc from its ore require more heat because zinc has a higher melting point or is more reactive or something (although if it is more reactive then wouldn’t it need less heat because less energy is needed to react with it)??? **DOES the process of extracting zinc require more heat energy than that of iron?

  • Answer:reduction process uses a blast furnace to melt the prepared ore into its elemental components. The blast furnace is fueled by electricity, coke, or natural gas, which generate temperatures of up to 2200°F (1204°C). This, however, also generates carbon dioxide, which recombines with the zinc as it cools to re-form zinc oxide. To reduce this reformation, the zinc is sprayed with molten lead while it is still hot. The lead, at 1022°F (550°C), dissolves the zinc and carries it to another chamber, where it is cooled to 824°F (440°C). At this temperature, the lighter zinc separates out of the lead and is drained off the top. The lead is reheated and returned to the blast furnace.

Associated Furnace Pliers Question:Why is combustion air preheated in some process furnaces in refineries?

  • Answer:It supplies extra activation energy to the combustion so that the furnace will burn cleaner and more efficiently.

Furnace Gas Valve

Question
Before I blow up the house…

This past summer, I scheduled an “annual” inspection by the gas company
(in quotes because it has been several years). The inspector found a
problem with the flue pipes and tagged the furnace.

I had the repair work done and called the gas company to send the
inspector back out. He came out, inspected, and removed the tag.
However, I discovered this evening, as the house finally got cold enough
for me to notice, that he neglected to turn the gas back on. I mean
there’s the gas pipe, and it’s got a valve on it, and the valve handle
is at 90 degrees to the line. So that pretty much tells me the gas to
the furnace is not turned on.

Okay, so here’s the stupid user question. Do gas furnaces still have
pilot lights that require lighting when the gas is turned on, or do they
have electric ignition and just need the valve opened to start working?

I should add that this is a Bryant Quietline furnace of unknown vintage
but at least a decade old, probably more like two decades, if that makes
a difference in answering the question.

If nobody here knows the answer, I’ll call the gas company tomorrow and
use extra blankets tonight. I don’t want to call them now and then have
to wait up all night for them to show up and tell me what an idiot I am.
Answers
Ok, a couple of things. First of all, you mentioned you couldn’t hear because of
the fan. Is your thermostat set to have the fan on ON, and not AUTO? If it isn’t
there already, set it to auto (mainly so it keeps quiet to aid troubleshooting).
I ask this because typically the blower fan doesn’t start until the plenum gets
hot or a set time after burner ignition. Or do you mean you hear the draft
inducer blower running? That’s a much smaller fan that blows the exhaust out of
the furnace, and yes that one should come on immediately after the call for heat.
Not all furnaces have an inducer fan, older ones would be less likely to have
this.

You mentioned (I think) there are two furnaces, side by side. For now, just pick
one and concentrate on that. Do both furnaces have a separate manual shut off on
the gas line?

If it has a pilot, the control knob I referred to would be on a valve unit inside
the furance. Just follow the gas line inside the furnace until you get to
something that looks like a valve. If it is electronic ignition, it will not have
a knob, if it is a pilot ignition, it will..

I assume your furnace is single stage. (i.e. it’s either on or off, no low or
high). I’m also assuming it is not a high efficiency furnace and the exhaust flue
is connected to a chimney.
If the furnace is electronic ignition, the sequence of events is controlled by a
circuit board and goes like this:
1.) Thermostat calls for heat (closes a 24 volt control circuit)
2.) Draft inducer fan (if equipped) starts and positive draft verified.
3.) Ignitor is energized, which gets extremely hot. (takes 10-30 seconds usually)

4.) When ignitor passes ready test, main gas valve opens, supplying the burner.
The hot ignitor ignites the gas.
5.) Positive burner ignition is detected and gas valve is permitted to remain
open. If not, a fault is detected (possibly recorded) and main valve is shut off.

6.) After a minute or two, furnace is hot enough to run the main blower, which
starts on its own thermostat or via a timer.

If it is pilot, it is much simpler.
1.) Thermostat calls for heat
2) Draft inducer fan starts (if equipped)
3.) Gas valve to burner opens. The burner lights immediately from the pilot.
4.) Blower fan turns on as above.

Do you know the model number of the furnace? Perhaps I can find better
information based on that.
Associated Furnace Gas Valve Question:how does a furnace gas valve work elactrical and trouble shooting it th tr where does – &+ for 24v?
my furnace has 4 burners two burners turn on but very lazy flame the other two do not and the furnace turns off i just need to know how to trouble shoot it check for pressure or tell me what the symbols mean it has TH TR and TH/TR terminal with screws i found a web site on the valves and seen how they work and i have a bad solenoid need to buy valve not opening all the way ignorance and not knowing is your worst enemy.

  • Answer:You may need to have the burners cleaned. There’s nothing wrong with the gas valve if you’re getting any kind of flame. the cleaning should be done by someone who knows what they’re doing, a.k.a. a professional.

Associated Furnace Gas Valve Question:how do you manually open a furnace gas valve?
installing new 2 stage furnace, need to set hi lh propane pressures, how do i manually actuate each each seperately?

  • Answer:I Agree with get pro help, but if you know which terminals operate which stage you can take a jumper (a wire with an alligator clip on each end ) and introduce 12 volts to the positive terminal on the valve, by clipping the one end to the R terminal where your thermostat wire comes in, and the other to the valve. That will make it open but make sure your ignition system is on other wise you will be letting raw gas into the chamber. if this is sounding to complicated for you DON”T DO IT call some one who can help

Associated Furnace Gas Valve Question:how to install a furnace gas valve?
I am wondering if there is anything tricky about ,just turning off the gas and changing it?

  • Answer:nothing tricky, shut off gas, shut off elec, break union, remove pipe inst valve using good pipe dope or teflon tape making sure the tape does not extend beyond the end of the pipe, make sure the arrow on the gas valve goes with the flo of gas, after inst valve turn on gas ,get spray bottle w/soapy h20 in it and spray fittings looking for bubbles, reconnect wires, turn on gas valve and test

Associated Furnace Gas Valve Question:I have a Carrier furnace. The gas valve works intermittently?
A 5 year old Carrier furnace, with HSI: The gas valve has worked intermittently for the last year. I would come out to the garage, cycle power to the furnace, and the unit would then work (sometimes) I’ve done the following: 1. I tested the connection from the PCB to the valve, both green two wire connection and the blue. No change. 2. The large solenoid clicks when the relay turns the valve on, but the small relay doesn’t seem to be working. 3. It tries three or four times, then locks out for three hours. 4. I’ve checked the PCB and no obvious heat or burn marks on the board. 5. I’ve made sure I have a good ground (I ran a jumper to a nearby water line to make sure) 6. The fuse on the PCB is fine. 7. The cycle is normal, (power-up, wait a few secs, the main blower blows for 2 min, the purge motor comes on for 10-15 sec, I hear the hsi relay , the hsi glows, the gas valve relay and the large solenoid clicks. Any option but to replace the gas valve?

  • Answer:tighten all wire connections, check for any oxidizing on wires or terminals(boards). on valves put a screwdriver on top to make sure valve is working, try to pull screwdriver up off top it should have magnetism feel to it. if these are ok you will need to replace valve.

Associated Furnace Gas Valve Question:where can I find a knob for a gas valve for a furnace?
The name of the furnace is called Intertherm, the model # is 315984 and the gas valve is # 36c67. There is nothing wrong with the valve, do I have to replace the whole part?

  • Answer:Just get a universal knob at the hardware store that has vice clamp in it, even a faucet knob.

Associated Furnace Gas Valve Question:I have a gas furnace, the pilot is not staying lit, and the gas valve won’t turn on..help?
It is a gas floor furnace. I have little the pilot numerous amounts of times, and it keeps staying on and then it goes out. The gas valve won’t turn on. Let me revise my question, the pilot light IS staying lit, but the when you go to turn it to the on position it goes out

  • Answer:If the pilot light won’t stay lit, it may be the thermocouple. That is the metal tube that the pilot light keeps hot. It generates a small electrical charge that goes up the wire to the valve. They thermocouple usually will screw in to the valve and clip on to the pilot light. You can get a new one at most hardware stores, Home Deopt, Lowes, Coast To Coast, Ace Hardware, etc. If you’re a renter, the landlord should probably replace it.

Associated Furnace Gas Valve Question:natural gas furnace valve not opening?
I recently converted my furnace from l.p. gas to natural gas. It’s been maybe two weeks of me troubleshooting and replacing. I have a new gas valve and transformer in the furnace. There is 24v running to the valve and it clicks to open but no gas comes out. I have exhausted all my options with the mechanical/electrical components on the furnace. I have bled the valve to be sure that there was gas making it to the inlet side. Does anyone have an idea as to why the valve stopped opening once I converted it over? I have tripple checked to make sure that everything is installed correctly. another odd thing is that when the valve calls to be open (even though I shouldn’t) I can smack it and the gas flows. that made me think to change out what I have changed out. is it possible that too little or too much pressure to the valve would cause it not to flow gas?

  • Answer:I realize this is probably a dumb question, but it has to be asked, just so everyone else won’t have to wonder. Are you dead sure you put the valve on in the right direction? I’m not a certified furnace installer or repair person, so I don’t actually know if it’s even possible to put a valve on backwards, so, the question. It certainly sounds like you’ve done everything that could be done, other than to take the valve off and try getting it to open while it’s off. If it’s opening, it should do it on a bench, with 24 volts going to it. You may have to take the transformer with it to be sure, and actually look up in the holes to see if you can spot the flap opening up for the gas to flow. You haven’t mentioned a pilot at all, so I have to wonder if this is an igniter type system? That would be my methodology of checking the valve and the transformer. If you can get it to open on the bench, then it certainly should open in place.

Associated Furnace Gas Valve Question:what is the maximum inlet pressure on a furnace gas valve?

  • Answer:Typically it is 7in WC for a residential gas furnace. 3 1/2 inches is operating pressure at the valve, 13 inches in at the regulator. Street pressure is typically 2 psi.

Associated Furnace Gas Valve Question:What thermocouple controls the gas valve in this furnace?
I am in need of repair help with my motorhome furnace, since it’s being used this winter. The furnace is a “Suburban Model NT20A” in an old Explorer RV. Is a schematic available anywhere?

  • Answer:take out the old one and take it to the store with you.

Associated Furnace Gas Valve Question:don’t know where the gas valve is to my tempstar furnace?
I have turned on the thermostat in my living room, programmed all the desired temperatures but nothing is happening. The directions on the furnace say it lights its self, but I’am thinking the gas may be off to it, but I can’t find the gas valve to it. Help………1st time home owners.

  • Answer:Follow the gas line. It always leads to the gas valve near the furnace. If the valve is on, the lever will be in line with the pipe. If the valve is off, the lever will be perpendicular to the pipe. Also be sure all the emegency switces for tha ac power are ‘on’.

Furnace Aluminum

Question
I recently built a very small version (5 gallon bucket size) of a cupola
furnace to try my hand at some aluminum casting. I plan on using a crucible
to hold the scrap until it liquefies, so in practice it really isn’t a
cupola furnace, but the principal is the same; shoot a blast through the
fuel while burning to increase the temperature of the burn and get your
melting temperature. My question is about the blast. My fuel, which is
charcoal for now, just doesn’t seem to get hot enough to do the job. I know
this can be done with charcoal, that’s how they used to melt iron at 2800
degrees until coke was discovered. I only need 1400 degrees to get the
aluminum flowing. So, how much blast, in CFM, and how much fuel, in pounds,
do I need to get this thing working? This is really just a trial version,
I’m talking about doing castings as small as a pound for now, just to get an
idea of how the process works.
Does anyone have any information on building a small melt furnace? I plan on
doing some bronze or brass if it works out, and I figure that aluminum is a
good starting point, since the raw material is free. Thanks.

Answers
Check out Stewart Marshal’s page at http://www.rockisland.com/~marshall/ He
wrote a book on Cupola Furnaces which I bought. He has some great
historical information on these devices. Like the fact that, in the old
days, they were able to melt iron using charcoal because they used a special
hardwood charcoal. They took hand selected trees found at certain altitudes
in the mountains, and made the charcoal from them. You can’t get that kind
of heat from grocery store charcoal briquettes. To get more heat you need
coke.

On his page you will see photos of different size furnaces he has built.
His book gives formulas for calculating and measuring the blast. You can
also get his book from Lindsay Publications. Interesting to read just for
the fun of it.

Aluminum or Stainless Steel chimney flue liner for an oil furnace?
I’ve had a couple of estimates, one for an aluminum liner and one for stainless steel. The cost of the aluminum liner is appealing but is that adequate for an oil furnace?

  • Answer:You cant use aluminum, it will not hold up to fuel oil furnace temperature range. Someone made a mistake quoting that or they were just naive about it.

Associated Furnace Aluminu Question:Can I use aluminum foil instead of a porcelin crucible in a 575 C furnace? Crucibles are expensive.?
I need to react some samples to 575 C, and I dont have enough porcelin crucibles, so I would like to place the samples in aluminum foil. Is this safe?

  • Answer:the aluminum will not hold up to the temp. thicker aluminum may hold up for a time but the thickness would have to be considerably thicker. 3/16 min thickness then the cost goes up. so im sure the porcelin would still be cheaper have you thought of just using a pyrex dish?

Associated Furnace Aluminu Question:electric arc furnace electrode arm made by aluminum, how to repair?
old aluminium with new aluminium while welding old welding was cracking

  • Answer:Your question is more of a question than a question. Exactly what are you trying to ask???? It has been 35 years sense I finished welding school and I can probably help you but I need to know more about what you are asking, but I will take a shot in the dark at it any way. To start with, it sounds like you are trying to weld cast aluminum and this process may or may not work. It is according to the alloy. But here goes a try. 1: Grind a nice V down on both parts where they need to be joined together at. Anywhere it needs a bead of weld at. 2: Set you up a jig of some sort, even if it is bricks or something so you can put the two pieces together the way they need to fit, very fast. 3: Put both pieces in the oven and turn on to 400 degrees. 4: Wait until it reaches 400 degrees and wait 15 minutes longer. 5; This is the part you need to haul tail on, OK. Get them to the jig, set them up, weld them ASAP and then get them back in the oven ASAP. 6: Turn the oven down 50 degrees, every 10 minutes until you get to warm and then after 10 minutes turn oven off and allow to finish cooling completely. Aluminum expands and contracts rapidly. When you weld cold aluminum the weld is hot and there is too much af a heat sink in the metal so it cracks as you are welding it. I took a welding test years ago where we had to weld inconeal to stainless steel and I was the first one out of fourty some people that passed the test and they were welding as good as I was. Some better, but I was letting mine cool more than they were between passes. Cast aluminum is just the opposite. Cast Iron is the same way.
