Question
My old oil furnace died this week and I obtained several estimates for
a new high-efficiency gas furnace. However, I have heard conflicting
stories about the “ranking” of the brands. Several competing salemen
have told me their brand was top of the line. What are the
net.opinions on these brands:
Answers
I just replaced my furnace and central AC last year. What I heard from
every single rep, except one, was that everybody else’s furnace had problems.
Some of the problems were major some minor. The only thing all of them said
that was the same was that Janitrol was not any good at all. I dont know if
this is true or not, but it was by far the least expensive unit , sometimes
less than half the price. I tried to compare apples to apples. My base for
comparison was; a 10 SEER AC and a 70% efficient furnace. Of course nearly
all of them tried to push the more efficient, more expensive units.
Lennox: old name in the business, lots of local reps in my area. Their sale
pitch revolved around payback time. Funny thing is the guy had a
“computer” that figured this out for you. It figured in the
efficiency of the old unit and the new unit and the savings from
using the new unit and how long it would take to pay for itself.
Well after using this computer, it turns out that no matter what
efficiency unit you buy it takes 5yrs to pay for itself. They must
have planned it thay way when the computer was programmed or the
prices were set by the company. Naturally they pushed the most
expensive model. They offered an average warranty at an average
price. They were my second choice.
Heil: Also known as Whirlpool, Sears, and TempStar. The one rep who didnt
badmouth the others sold TempStar products. He was a one man outfit
and was the least expensive (except for the Janitrol). The main
reason I bought from him was he was the only guy I talked to that
seemed to honest. Also the equipment looked to be of decent quality
and since it was the same product that Sears sells, I figured that
Sears would service it if need be and Sears will allways be around
if I need them. His price was a thousand dollars less than Sears.
I would could consider this equipment to be of average quality also.
Carrier: These guys had the worst reps in town. I tried four different
Carrier dealers and only one actually came out to estimate the job.
The guy who did come out was the sleaziest of all the guys that
I talked to. This guy also sold janitrol. His said that Janitrol
was of a lesser quality than the big names, but he still sold it to
poeple who couldnt afford Carrier products. Is that the way to sell
or what ? This guy didnt have a brochure on the product or any
other written info either. I have no idea how good the equipment
is, the warranty was average and so was the price.
Trane: Really expensive, Really really expensive. Offer a great ten year
all inclusive warranty, if you pay for the second five years. No
kidding , the really smooth sales rep pushed how great this ten
year manufacturers warranty was. It sounded great and I thought
“now there is a company that stands behind its’ product”. When I
looked into the guys price guide, there were two columns. One for
the 5 year warranty and one for the 10 year warranty, some deal.
It’s possible the sales rep mislead all on his own, and this
definetely turned me off to the product this guy was selling.
Trane has fabulous brochures, great cutaways of the equipment
and high quality printing. I’m sure that’s part of why the Trane
stuff was double the price of of the others. Also the Trane guy
“a special lineset for the a/c unit” that had to be used that wasnt
part of the original bid for an extra $200. When my Tempstar was
installed this cost 50 dollars and wasnt a surprise add on after
bid was given to me. Impressive looking equipment, expensive
and a good 5yr warranty standard.
Well, as you can tell I went for the product with most honest seeming sales
rep. It’s been about 5 months and I’m very happy with the equipment. One
other thing, all of the dealers said that were not used to some one shopping
around. Nearly all of their customers were in desperate situations, such as
no heat in December or no AC in August. They did not like the fact that I
was getting bids from other dealers. All except the Tempstar guy , I guess
he knew he would beat their prices and still make money. And he did.

Associated Top Furnace Brands Question:Buying new Goodman central heating and air-conditioning units?
I have a 2700 square-foot house in Southern California, and I am replacing the builder supplied AC and furnace units. The top brands Lennox and Trane are beyond my budget, so the contractor is recommending Goodman, which is one of the largest manufacturers of this equipment. Consumer Digest rates them a best buy for the “budget minded” consumer. Could someone knowledgeable on this subject comment on the quality of Goodman.
- Answer:Hi, I just installed a 3.5 ton AC and heat…..Been using the air and works great….could see the savings right away… The furnace will be next…. how the ac worked I have no worries.. So far Goodman has been great! Get the Goodman warranty with it to… Very cheap and covers everything. Good luck I hope this helped! Mike
Associated Top Furnace Brands Question:what is the top five oil furnace?
Looking to replace my furnace and like to know witch brand is the most efficient and reliable
- Answer:Natural gas is the most efficient furnace I know. Oil stinks and burns cooler than gas. After a while oil leaves a film on every thing in your house. Propane gas burns the coolest of them all. Get a gas furnace the right size for your house.
Associated Top Furnace Brands Question:What does it mean if my furnace is making a choking sound?
I just moved to a brand new home, and whenever my furnace runs, it often makes what can only be best described as a “choking sound”. It stutters, over and over, yet does work. Is this a problem, and if so, how do i resolve it? Further, my heat is real lousy in the top floor; it comes out nice, but not hot! Is this related?
- Answer:Could be running out of fuel, have plugged jets or plugged fuel filter or the firebox is coming apart…a good weekend project or time to call the furnace man.
Associated Top Furnace Brands Question:My condo always feels colder than thermostat says it is. Time to change the thermostat?
I live on the top floor of a 3-story condo and my (programmable) thermostat on average has been reading in the high 60’s, low 70’s, yet the rooms always feel cooler than the temperature readout. My furnace is brand new but I kept the thermostat that came with the place. The furnace will kick on if I raise the thermostat, but if I keep to a reasonable schedule programmed into the panel, the furnace will never cycle on.
- Answer:No. Buy a room thermometer and see how the results compare to the thermostat.
Associated Top Furnace Brands Question:New part, or brand new furnace?
Our heat stopped working a few days ago. The furnace is probably close to ten years old and is not a very top-quality one. Our home is approx 1500 sq ft. The repairman came out and checked everything, and said it needs a new valve. He said he wasn’t sure of the price of the valve, but said it could run a couple hundred. Our other choice is to get a brand new furnace (and of course he recommended the highly $$$ Trane furnaces). I’m getting a quote on this new part, and I think a couple hundred for a very small part is outrageous, but if it is in fact expensive, is it better to just install a brand new furnace? We will be in this home for close to a year or so but after that will move. Any tips will be helpful!!
- Answer:Repair it, replacing it will drag in more and more complications until you end up spending a lot of money replacing half the system. The answer might be different if you were there long term, but under the circumstances you really just want a repair. Gas valves are $100 to $120 for the most part plus labor to install (and it really isn’t a do it yourself job). So, $200 seems about right.
Associated Top Furnace Brands Question:If we’re not happy with our new $12,000 Trane oil furnace, what can we do about it?
A little under 3 months ago we had a brand new Trane oil furnace/AC combo installed by Total Heating and Comfort and we’ve had nothing but problems from day one. We were promised a 2 day install tops and yet it took 3 and a half weeks. We were told that we wouldn’t be able to hear the furnace or the blower/fan kick on and run even though the furnace is installed in our hallway (we don’t have a basement). The damn thing sounds like a diesel pickup truck running in the middle of our house and that’s even before the blower/fan kicks on. A part was broken on the BRAND NEW furnace unit the day it was delivered so that alone added 4 days to the install time. On top of that, our oil tank is outside so it would get so cold the pump inside couldn’t suck the fuel into the furnace. Various techs from Total Comfort came out about 7 or 8 times and scratched their heads saying they didn’t know how to fix it so they finally called the master Trane tech in Richmond, VA. He sent another tech out who installed a device called a tiger loop that heats the fuel an extra 35 degrees before it hits the pump so it will be the right viscosity. Well, that was 3 weeks ago and now our furnace is dead again. I went out and checked the fuel gauge and it showed that we’re just under the half mark so I know we’re not too low on fuel. My question is, can we just tell Total Comfort to take this piece of crap out of here and give us an electric furnace? I’d be much happier paying $300-$400 a month for our electric bill if it meant we actually had some damn heat. In the 3 months we’ve had this unit, we’ve had heat for maybe 6-7 weeks. Any advice on what to do would be appreciated.
- Answer:Yes I would do exactly that. In addition to telling them to take it out and put in an electric one, list in detail, just as you have done here, all of the problems past an present and after calling them to tell them this I would put your compliant in writing and send it certified mail so that you have a signature to the installing company. Tell them exactly what you want and that you don’t want to pay for anything to do with this equipment or disruption to your lives. Then I would also call or write TRANE customer service with the exact same complaints. Many times the manufacturer will get things taken care of because they want to keep their good name. Also if you do not get satisfaction from the company doing this install, take your complaint to every organization you can, such as the BBB.org, Angieslist.com etc.
Associated Top Furnace Brands Question:Will my furnace not work properly if the batteries in my thermostat are almost dead?
We woke up this morning and it was 60 degrees in our house. We had the thermostat set on 75 the whole night. We have a brand new furnace (installed a few weeks ago) and I’m bummed it’s not working properly. I live near Chicago and it has been in the sub zero’s, but it shouldn’t be THAT cold in here. I noticed this morning the thermostat, although on, said at the top “replace batteries”. I did that.. should I expect it to get warmer in here? Can the furnace not work properly because the thermostat has bad batteries?
- Answer:I don’t know your exact situation but usually the batteries are there simply to maintain the memory of a programmable thermostat during short power outages–the thermostat is running on low-voltage power from the house system, not the batteries, so low batteries wouldn’t be the problem. Maybe an HVAC pro could confirm this with a post. So I’d suspect two other possibilities. The weather is so cold that your furnace simply can’t keep up with the weather, in which case it might have been undersized or maybe your house is not well weatherstripped and insulated. Or maybe the furnace isn’t quite working properly yet, in which case you should have the installer come back to tweak it.
Associated Top Furnace Brands Question:Top 5 heat pumps? Anyone know?
My heat pump which is used to both heat and cool my home is 15 years old and will soon need replacement. I would like to know the most reliable and reputable heat pumps brands that are available. I am told that since my system uses freon, that both the outside heat pump, as well as the inside furnace unit which partially uses the heat pump for heating in winter, will need to be completely replaced because it uses freon which already is, or will soon will be, banned for environmental reasons. The inside furnace unit runs on an electric coil strip to add the extra heat which the heat pump cannot supply when it gets too cold outside in the winter. Will the entire set up need to be replaced? And what would be the approximate cost of this total replacement? Thanks…
- Answer:Cost in a given series is based on BTU, the cooling or heating capacity. (Sometimes they use “ton” but I think that’s not used now) Good brands are Carrier, Trane, ..I forgot the rest. You need to find several local reputable dealers and ask for estimates. You probably need duct work re-done or at least the leaks and insulation repaired. The size of your house, the leakiness of your doors and windows and the insulation in your house all have to be considered before the proper size (no. of BTUs) can be selected. Associated Top Furnace Brands Question:95% Goodman GMV furnace won’t stay lit, code 3?
:brand new goodman gmv furnace 2 stage 80k and 115k was running ok after craigslist install, don’t have much money. now though less then a week later it lights up then the flame goes out after 1 to 20 seconds randomly. In trying to figure out what changed I can only say… 1) it rained 2) I closed a vent 3) I messed with thermostat (so stupid!!!) 4) its gotten colder in general 1) I mention rain because I noticed the vent going outside has some water in it looking down it from the outside. it runs through the wall not quite level but with the open end a bit higher so I cannot see how it could avoid recieving some rain water. the installer had the purple glue stuff on the end of it outside like he was going to add a peice to the end maybe to protect it from the rain but I don’t know. I did notice when the furnace was running (no flame) water coming out of the chimney thing outside. I should mention there is only one hole in concrete block, they said they were going to try some ‘new’ venting method thing where they only had to run one pipe. So 2 white pipes come out of the furnace and run to a ‘Y’ like thing to one pipe going through the wall. I looked down the tube outside and only see one pipe so I’m pretty mystafied about that one. 2) I closed a vent to an unused room. the guy who installed it used 6 inch flex for the vent runs and the furnace was very powerful maybe not enough vents? There are 10 vents all with 6 inch flex duct but 5 are nearly completely closed to force air to the other side of the house. ran ok before though so I don’t see how that could be it. 3) I read the white rogers thermostat manual and changed some settings. I think I changed them all back after pulling out the batteries and cutting power to the house but not sure about all settings. I read that some anticipation setting is automatic with digital thermostats so that should be working? The thermo has only 2 wires as wires were not changed during upgrade. ran fine for a week… 4) Its gotten a bit colder out and the duct work the guy did is not too good. the house has a finished and insulated top floor and I’m still using the old, very large, return air duct work. However he put in new, not air tight duct for the hot air. the bottom floor has no rooms or walls or insulation, it is concrete block and thusly cold air from downstairs (where the furnace is) is being sucked into the return air drop he did and especially the filter area which is too big. His duct work also shoots some hot air meant for upstairs out downstairs. when it was around 60 degrees downstairs it ran ok but now that it’s colder it’s not staying lit. however at the warmest time of day now the temp is the same as when it ran ok and it still will not stay lit so I don’t think ductwork or temperature is the prob. So thats all thats changed since it was working right. I know for sure it was running ok before I messed with the thermostat changing settings but not sure thats when it stopped working. As to what I see the furnace starts up, flame lights and then after just a few seconds it goes out. If the doors are screwed on, when the flame goes out there is a very signifigant air pressure change inside the furnace as I can see and hear the door bend and a gush of air. with the door off this is not noticable. Also the red LED flashed 3 times after the flame goes out. It then all restarts light the flame again only to kill it and flash the LED 3 times. Perhaps most telling (I don’t know, guessing here) is the flame itself seems maybe not to be shooting hard enough. It’s not all in the duct work area but has come back enough that there is a solid line of flame closest to the front of the viewer. I’m guessing the gas is weak and the flame is being detected where it’s not sopposed to be and some heat sensor is shutting it down. I tried adjusting 2 screws and 2 hex things that were all next to each other attached to the gas line but they were all already turned all the way up. So thats the situation. I kn ow the drain is not clogged, not sure whats going on with the intake but the flame still goes out with the panels off so maybe that answers that. code mentions pressure switch problem but I don’t know how to diagnose or fix. everything is brand spanking new though. If anyone can offer some advise you’ll be warming a cold family so thanks a ton in advance… nothing about flame sensor in the error codes, talks about pressure switch but not sure which one or how to fix. will work on your suggestions first thing in the AM and thanks so much for them – still accepting suggestions…
- Answer:Sometimes on the Goodmans, when the flame goes out after just a few seconds, it could be the flame rod. Heres what you do. Pull off the top door, underneathe the burners there is a wire (i think its blue) that goes to a little rod that sticks up into the burners. Take a 1/4 nut driver and remove the screw holding that rod up there. Take some sand paper, steel wool or maybe even some emery cloth and rub it on the rod, you are basically cleaning it. Make sure you wipe off the rod to ensure there are no particals left on it. Put the rod back in, tighten the screw, and try to start it and see what happens. Another thing you might want to check, is make sure there is nothing blocking the exhaust pipe. Also check the little hoses that go to the pressure switch, pull them off and blow into them, and make sure they are clear of any moisture or debris that may have gotten in there. Good Luck
